This paper examines and analyzes the inclusion of international issues in LIS Education in Europe, the USA, and Canada. The data gathered via a questionnaire survey of 60 LIS programs in Europe, the USA and Canada are presented. The provision of a program that addresses global views in LIS Education is recommended.

Library & Information Science Research, 2000Co-Authors: Eino SierpeAbstract:Gender scholars have argued that existing social structures play an important role in the development and diffusion of technology. They have also suggested that technology is a multifaceted construct and that gender is implicated in all facets. As part of a larger and still-ongoing investigation, the research presented here focuses on one of the facets of a particular form of technology, namely, the practice of computer-mediated communication (CMC). The analysis of two subscription lists with a combined total of over 830 personal subscribers and 855 messages sent to the Library/Information Science Education Forum (JESSE) over a 20-month period suggests that gender has important implications in the practice of CMC. Males are more active than female subscribers and their contributions exceed their proportional representation. These findings add support to previous research on gender in electronic discussion lists.

It addresses two questions: what are the roles for digital librarians? How should they be educated?Design/methodology/approach – The analysis is based on the results of the project “European Curriculum Reflections on Library and Information Science Education” and the proceedings of the Workshops on Digital Library Education, held in Italy in 2005 and in Croatia in 2006.Findings – Three approaches to Education for digital library are described: the emergence of the concept of “memory institutions”; the library‐based approach to knowledge management; and the isolation of IT from library and Information Science (LIS) schools.Research limitations/implications – The roles of the digital librarian are suggested, and the structure of a course for digital library Education is proposed, but further research is needed on the definition of the digital library concept.Practical implications – A digital librarian shou...
