Visual Information Seeking
Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, 2014Co-Authors: Dan AlbertsonAbstract:The present study reports on the Information Seeking Processes in a visual context, referred to throughout as visual Information Seeking. This study synthesizes research throughout different, yet complementary, areas, each capable of contributing findings and understanding to visual Information Seeking. Methods previously applied for examining the visual Information Seeking Process are reviewed, including interactive experiments, surveys, and various qualitative approaches. The methods and resulting findings are presented and structured according to generalized phases of existing Information Seeking models, which include the needs, actions, and assessments of users. A review of visual Information needs focuses on need and thus query formulation; user actions, as reviewed, centers on search and browse behaviors and the observed trends, concluded by a survey of users' assessments of visual Information as part of the interactive Process. This separate examination, specific to a visual context, is significant; visual Information can influence outcomes in an interactive Process and presents variations in the types of needs, tasks, considerations, and decisions of users, as compared to Information Seeking in other contexts.

INSYDER: a content-based visual-Information-Seeking system for the Web

MannAbstract:This paper presents INSYDER, a content-based visual-Information-Seeking system for the Web. The Web can be seen as one huge digital library offering a variety of very useful Information for business analysts. INSYDER addresses these possibilities and offers powerful retrieval and visualisation functionalities. The main focus during the development was on the usability of the system. Therefore, a variety of well-established visualisation components were employed to support the user during the Information-Seeking Process (e.g. visual query, result table, bar graph, segment view with tile bars, and scatterplot). Also, the retrieval aspects were developed with the goal of increasing the usability of the system (e.g. natural language search, content-based classification, relevance feedback). Extensive evaluations of the retrieval performance and the usability of the visualisation were conducted. The results of these evaluations offered many helpful insights into developing a new visual-Information-Seeking system called VisMeB.

How users claim they perform triage, and what they actually do, are often not the same.

ECDL - MedioVis – a user-centred library metadata browser

König, Harald ReitererAbstract:MedioVis is a visual Information Seeking system which was designed especially for library data. The objective target was to create a system which simplifies and optimizes the user's Information Seeking Process and thus further motivates the user to browse in the library stock. To enhance the motivation special attention was given to consider joy of use aspects during the design of the user interface. The primary user interface design is based on multiple coordinated views to offer a great variety of exploration possibilities in a direct-manipulative manner. To accomplish a self-explanatory usability of the system for non-expert users, the development was accompanied by continuous user tests with casual and regular library users. At the end of the development Process a comprehensive summative evaluation was conducted, comparing efficiency and joy of use of the existing web-based catalogue system KOALA of the library of the University of Konstanz with the MedioVis system. The results of this comparative evaluation show a significant improvement of the efficiency of the Information Seeking Process with the help of MedioVis. The users also rated MedioVis significantly better in all dimensions of its hedonic quality and appeal compared with KOALA.
