Journal of Sea Research, 2018Co-Authors: Tahani El Ayari, Nicolas Bierne, Najoua Trigui El MenifAbstract:Abstract The development of male genital tract by female gastropods, or imposex, can be caused by the tributyltin used in antifouling paints. A spatial survey of imposex in the gastropod Stramonita haemastoma was conducted across five Western Mediterranean and eleven North-Eastern Atlantic sites, in order to monitor the effectiveness of the tributyltin regulation imposed in the International Maritime Organisation. Imposex still occurs in eight out of eleven Mediterranean sites and in three out of five Atlantic sites. Extreme values of imposex incidence (I%) and degree (VDSI) were recorded in Tunisia, mainly in Bizerta channel (I% = 96.2%, VDSI = 0.96). However, the Relative Penis Length index (RPLI) was higher in Western Mediterranean sites where values varied between 0.56 in Algiers (Algeria) and 11.80 in Bouznika (Morocco). In the European sites, moderate to low imposex level and degree were recorded. All the affected sites were below the Ecotoxicological Assessment Criteria (EAC) derived for TBT.

This provides an inadvertant mechanism for the transfer and dispersal of harmful bacteria, toxic dinoflagellates, seaweeds, molluscs, starfish, crabs and fish (Rigby and Hallegraeff 1996). Establishment of nonindigenous and harmful organisms have resulted in significant ecological and environmental damage and also pose a threat to human health through Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning, and possibly even Cholera outbreaks (McCarthy and Khambaty 1994). As a result of these concerns, the International Maritime Organisation has recognised shipping ballast water as an International pollutant of major consequence and is currently developing a set of draft regulations for potential use in future International shipping operations. These guidelines will require ships to undertake appropriate management or treatment operations to minimise the risks of ballast water introductions. Ballast water exchange at sea in organism-depleted deep ocean waters is currently the recommended treatment option, although this technique has some limitations (Rigby and Hallegraeff 1994). Here we show how a novel, cost-effective heating technique using waste heat from the ship's main engine can be used to kill many unwanted organisms. Heated water flushed through 1 of the ballast tanks in an ocean trial resulted in destruction of all the zooplankton with very limited survival of the original phytoplankton. The original organisms were essentially reduced to flocculent amorphous detritus.

SRtP 2.0 — The Evolution of the Safe Return to Port Concept

This requirement is achieved by providing safe areas for passengers and essential services for allowing ship to Safely Return to Port (SRtP). The entry into force of these rules has changed the way to design passenger ships. In this respect big effort in the research has been done by industry to address design issues related to the impact on failure analysis of the complex interactions among systems. Today the research activity is working to bring operational matters in the design stage. This change of research focus was necessary because human factor and the way to operate the ship itself after a casualty on board may have a big impact in the design of the ship/systems. Also the management of the passengers after a casualty is becoming a major topic for safety. This paper presents the state of the art of Italian knowledge in the field of system engineering applied to passenger ship address to safety improvement and design reliability. An overview of present tools and methodologies will be offered together with future focuses in the research activity
