    Abstract:

    Background: This study examined the association between stress-related coping strategies and Internet Addiction and the moderating effect of depression in a sample of Taiwanese college students. Method: A total of 500 college students (238 men and 262 women) participated in this study. Internet Addiction was assessed using the Chen Internet Addiction Scale. Participants’ stress coping strategies and depressive symptoms were measured using the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced and the Beck Depression Inventory-II, respectively. We used t and chi-square tests to examine differences in demographic characteristics, depression, and stress coping strategies between participants with and without Internet Addiction. Significant variables were used in a logistic regression model to examine the association between stress coping strategies and Internet Addiction and the moderating effect of depression on the association. Results: Results indicated that use of restraint coping was negatively associated with Internet Addiction (odds ratio [OR] = 0.886, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.802–0.977), whereas denial (OR = 1.177, 95% CI: 1.029–1.346) and mental disengagement (OR = 2.673, 95% CI: 1.499–4.767) were positively associated with Internet Addiction. Depression had a moderating effect on the association between denial and Internet Addiction (OR = 0.701, 95% CI: 0.530–0.927).     Internet Addiction is a newly emergent disorder. It has been found to be associated with a variety of psychiatric disorders. Information about such coexisting psychiatric disorders is essential to understand the mechanism of Internet Addiction. In this review, we have recruited articles mentioning coexisting psychiatric disorders of Internet Addiction from the PubMed database as at November 3, 2009. We describe the updated results for such disorders of Internet Addiction, which include substance use disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression, hostility, and social anxiety disorder. We also provide discussion for possible mechanisms accounting for the coexistence of psychiatric disorders and Internet Addiction. The review might suggest that combined psychiatric disorders mentioned above should be evaluated and treated to prevent their deteriorating effect on the prognosis of Internet Addiction. On the other hand, Internet Addiction should be paid more attention to when treating people with these coexisting psychiatric disorders of Internet Addiction. Additionally, we also suggest future necessary research directions that could provide further important information for the understanding of this issue.

    Objectives To evaluate the predictive values of psychiatric symptoms for the occurrence of Internet Addiction and to determine the sex differences in the predictive value of psychiatric symptoms for the occurrence of Internet Addiction in adolescents. Design Internet Addiction, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, social phobia, and hostility were assessed by self-reported questionnaires. Participants were then invited to be assessed for Internet Addiction 6, 12, and 24 months later (the second, third, and fourth assessments, respectively). Setting Ten junior high schools in southern Taiwan. Participants A total of 2293 (1179 boys and 1114 girls) adolescents participated in the initial investigation. Main Exposure The course of time. Main Outcome Measure Internet Addiction as assessed using the Chen Internet Addiction Scale. Results Depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, social phobia, and hostility were found to predict the occurrence of Internet Addiction in the 2-year follow-up, and hostility and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder were the most significant predictors of Internet Addiction in male and female adolescents, respectively. Conclusions These results suggest that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, hostility, depression, and social phobia should be detected early on and intervention carried out to prevent Internet Addiction in adolescents.     The aims of this study were to develop diagnostic criteria of Internet Addiction for college students (DC-IA-C) with diagnostic interviews and to establish the optimal cutoff points of the Chen Internet Addiction Scale (CIAS) for the purposes of screening for and making the diagnosis of Internet Addiction. A total of 216 college students (132 male and 84 female) were recruited in the study. The results demonstrated that 5/6 cutoff points of criteria A in DC-IA-C had the best diagnostic accuracy (95.9%). Besides, 63/64 and 67/68 cutoff points of the CIAS were evaluated to be the best screening and diagnostic cutoff points, respectively. The DC-IA-C can provide health care professionals with a means to diagnose and communicate about Internet Addiction among college students, and the screening and diagnostic cutoff points of CIAS could provide a screening instrument or a discriminative instrument in surveys for Internet Addiction among college students.

    Abstract This study evaluated (a) the association between Internet Addiction and adult ADHD; (b) which one of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity was most associated with Internet Addiction; and (c) whether gender modulates the association between Internet Addiction and inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity among college students. A total of 2,793 students (937 male and 1,843 female) were recruited from eight colleges in Taiwan, and they all completed the Chen Internet Addiction Scale, Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale, and demographic data. The results demonstrated that adult ADHD was associated with Internet Addiction. Attention deficit was the most associated symptom of Internet Addiction, followed by impulsivity. Furthermore, the association between attention deficit and Internet Addiction was more significant among female college students.     Aims:  This study aimed to (i) evaluate the association between Internet Addiction and harmful alcohol use, and (ii) evaluate the associated personality characteristics of Internet Addiction as well as harmful alcohol use. Methods:  A total of 2453 college students were invited to complete the Chen Internet Addiction Scale, Behavior Inhibition System and Behavior Approach System Scale(BIS/BAS scale), and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test from May 2005 to May 2006. Results:  The results demonstrated Internet Addiction was associated with harmful alcohol use among college students. College students with Internet Addiction had higher scores on the BIS and BAS fun-seeking subscales. However, college students with harmful alcohol use had higher scores on the BAS drive and fun-seeking subscales, and lower scores on the BIS subscale. Conclusions:  Internet Addiction is associated with harmful alcohol use. Furthermore, fun seeking was the shared characteristic of these two problem behaviors and might contribute to the association. However, further studies are necessary to evaluate the underlying mechanisms accounting for the association between Internet Addiction and harmful alcohol use.

    Abstract This study aimed to a) evaluate the association between Internet Addiction and problematic alcohol use; b) based on problem behavior theory, explore whether Internet Addiction, as well as problematic alcohol use, correlated with the psychosocial proneness of problem behaviors among adolescents. A total of 2,114 high school students (1,204 male and 910 female) were recruited to complete the questionnaire assessing Internet Addiction, problematic alcohol use, and associated psychosocial variables. The result revealed that Internet Addiction was associated with problematic alcohol use. Besides, the psychosocial proneness of problem behaviors is associated with Internet Addiction as well as problematic alcohol use in adolescents. These results suggest Internet Addiction might be included in the organization of problem behavior theory, and it is suggested that prevention and intervention can best be carried out when grouped with other problem behaviors.

    Objective: This study was aimed to evaluate the association between Internet Addiction and depressive disorder, social phobia and adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in a sample of Taiwanese college students; and examine gender differences in the psychiatric comorbidity of Internet Addiction in this student population. Methods: Two hundred sixteen college students (132 males, 84 females) were recruited. Internet Addiction, major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, social phobia, and adult ADHD of all participants were diagnosed based on psychiatric diagnostic interview. Results: This study revealed that adult ADHD and depressive disorders were associated with Internet Addiction among college students. However, depressive disorders were associated with Internet Addiction in the males but not the females. Conclusion: With these results, it seems reasonable to suggest that effective evaluation of, and treatment for, adult ADHD and depressive disorders is required for college students with Internet Addiction.

    Aims:  The aim of the present study was to compare psychiatric symptoms between adolescents with and without Internet Addiction, as well as between analogs with and without substance use. Methods:  A total of 3662 students (2328 male and 1334 female) were recruited for the study. Self-report scales were utilized to assess psychiatric symptoms, Internet Addiction, and substance use. Results:  It was found that Internet Addiction or substance use in adolescents was associated with more severe psychiatric symptoms. Hostility and depression were associated with Internet Addiction and substance use after controlling for other symptoms. Conclusions:  This result partially supports the hypothesis that Internet Addiction should be included in the organization of problem behavior theory, and it is suggested that prevention and intervention can best be carried out when grouped with other problem behaviors. Moreover, more attention should be devoted to hostile and depressed adolescents in the design of preventive strategies and the related therapeutic interventions for Internet Addiction.

    Kimberly Young's initial work on Internet Addiction (IA) was pioneering and her early writings on the topic inspired many others to carry out research in the area. Young's (2015) recent paper on the ‘evolution of Internet Addiction’ featured very little European research, and did not consider the main international evidence that has contributed to our current knowledge about the conceptualization, epidemiology, etiology, and course of Internet-related disorders. This short commentary paper elaborates on important literature omitted by Young that the present authors believe may be of use to researchers. We also address statements made in Young's (2015) commentary that are incorrect (and therefore misleading) and not systematically substantiated by empirical evidence.

    Abstract:

    In the last decade, Internet usage has grown tremendously on a global scale. The increasing popularity and frequency of Internet use has led to an increasing number of reports highlighting the potential negative consequences of overuse. Over the last decade, research into Internet Addiction has proliferated. This paper reviews the existing 68 epidemiological studies of Internet Addiction that (i) contain quantitative empirical data, (ii) have been published after 2000, (iii) include an analysis relating to Internet Addiction, (iv) include a minimum of 1000 participants, and (v) provide a full-text article published in English using the database Web of Science. Assessment tools and conceptualisations, prevalence, and associated factors in adolescents and adults are scrutinised. The results reveal the following. First, no gold standard of Internet Addiction classification exists as 21 different assessment instruments have been identified. They adopt official criteria for substance use disorders or pathological gambling, no or few criteria relevant for an Addiction diagnosis, time spent online, or resulting problems. Second, reported prevalence rates differ as a consequence of different assessment tools and cut-offs, ranging from 0.8% in Italy to 26.7% in Hong Kong. Third, Internet Addiction is associated with a number of sociodemographic, Internet use, and psychosocial factors, as well as comorbid symptoms and disorder in adolescents and adults. The results indicate that a number of core symptoms (i.e., compulsive use, negative outcomes and salience) appear relevant for diagnosis, which assimilates Internet Addiction and other addictive disorders and also differentiates them, implying a conceptualisation as syndrome with similar etiology and components, but different expressions of Addictions. Limitations include the exclusion of studies with smaller sample sizes and studies focusing on specific online behaviours. Conclusively, there is a need for nosological precision so that ultimately those in need can be helped by translating the scientific evidence established in the context of Internet Addiction into actual clinical practice.

    Internet usage has grown exponentially over the last decade. Research indicates that excessive Internet use can lead to symptoms associated with Addiction. To date, assessment of potential Internet Addiction has varied regarding populations studied and instruments used, making reliable prevalence estimations difficult. To overcome the present problems a preliminary study was conducted testing a parsimonious Internet Addiction components model based on Griffiths’ Addiction components (Journal of Substance Use, 10, 191–197, 2005), including salience, mood modification, tolerance, withdrawal, conflict, and relapse. Two validated measures of Internet Addiction were used (Compulsive Internet Use Scale [CIUS], Meerkerk et al. in Cyberpsychology & Behavior, 12(1), 1–6, 2009, and Assessment for Internet and Computer Game Addiction Scale [AICA-S], Wolfling et al. 2010) in two independent samples (ns = 3,105 and 2,257). The fit of the model was analysed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis. Results indicate that the Internet Addiction components model fits the data in both samples well. The two sample/two instrument approach provides converging evidence concerning the degree to which the components model can organize the self-reported behavioural components of Internet Addiction. Recommendations for future research include a more detailed assessment of tolerance as Addiction component.

    As new media are becoming daily fare, Internet Addiction appears as a potential problem in adolescents. From the reported negative consequences, it appears that Internet Addiction can have a variety of detrimental outcomes for young people that may require professional intervention. Researchers have now identified a number of activities and personality traits associated with Internet Addiction. This study aimed to synthesise previous findings by (i) assessing the prevalence of potential Internet Addiction in a large sample of adolescents, and (ii) investigating the interactions between personality traits and the usage of particular Internet applications as risk factors for Internet Addiction. A total of 3105 adolescents in the Netherlands filled out a self-report questionnaire including the Compulsive Internet Use Scale and the Quick Big Five Scale. Results indicate that 3.7% of the sample were classified as potentially being addicted to the Internet. The use of online gaming and social applications (online social networking sites and Twitter) increased the risk for Internet Addiction, whereas extraversion and conscientiousness appeared as protective factors in high frequency online gamers. The findings support the inclusion of ‘Internet Addiction’ in the DSM-V. Vulnerability and resilience appear as significant aspects that require consideration in further studies.

    The last decade has witnessed a large increase in research on the newly emerging mental health problem of Internet Addiction. Rather than looking at Internet Addiction per se, this study focused on particular activities on the Internet that might be potentially addictive and linked them to personality traits that might predispose individuals to Internet Addiction. The aims of this study were (i) to assess the prevalence of clinically significant levels of Internet Addiction, and to (ii) discern the interplay between personality traits and specific Internet uses in increasing the risk for Internet Addiction. This cross-sectional online survey used data from 2257 students of an English university. Results indicated that 3.2% of the students were classified as being addicted to the Internet. The included personality traits and uses of online activities explained 21.5% of the variance in Internet Addiction. A combination of online shopping and neuroticism decreased the risk for Internet Addiction, whereas a combination of online gaming and openness to experience increased it. In addition to this, frequent usage of online shopping and social online activities, high neuroticism and low agreeableness significantly increased the chances of being addicted to the Internet.     Kimberly Young's initial work on Internet Addiction (IA) was pioneering and her early writings on the topic inspired many others to carry out research in the area. Young's (2015) recent paper on the ‘evolution of Internet Addiction’ featured very little European research, and did not consider the main international evidence that has contributed to our current knowledge about the conceptualization, epidemiology, etiology, and course of Internet-related disorders. This short commentary paper elaborates on important literature omitted by Young that the present authors believe may be of use to researchers. We also address statements made in Young's (2015) commentary that are incorrect (and therefore misleading) and not systematically substantiated by empirical evidence.

    In the last decade, Internet usage has grown tremendously on a global scale. The increasing popularity and frequency of Internet use has led to an increasing number of reports highlighting the potential negative consequences of overuse. Over the last decade, research into Internet Addiction has proliferated. This paper reviews the existing 68 epidemiological studies of Internet Addiction that (i) contain quantitative empirical data, (ii) have been published after 2000, (iii) include an analysis relating to Internet Addiction, (iv) include a minimum of 1000 participants, and (v) provide a full-text article published in English using the database Web of Science. Assessment tools and conceptualisations, prevalence, and associated factors in adolescents and adults are scrutinised. The results reveal the following. First, no gold standard of Internet Addiction classification exists as 21 different assessment instruments have been identified. They adopt official criteria for substance use disorders or pathological gambling, no or few criteria relevant for an Addiction diagnosis, time spent online, or resulting problems. Second, reported prevalence rates differ as a consequence of different assessment tools and cut-offs, ranging from 0.8% in Italy to 26.7% in Hong Kong. Third, Internet Addiction is associated with a number of sociodemographic, Internet use, and psychosocial factors, as well as comorbid symptoms and disorder in adolescents and adults. The results indicate that a number of core symptoms (i.e., compulsive use, negative outcomes and salience) appear relevant for diagnosis, which assimilates Internet Addiction and other addictive disorders and also differentiates them, implying a conceptualisation as syndrome with similar etiology and components, but different expressions of Addictions. Limitations include the exclusion of studies with smaller sample sizes and studies focusing on specific online behaviours. Conclusively, there is a need for nosological precision so that ultimately those in need can be helped by translating the scientific evidence established in the context of Internet Addiction into actual clinical practice.

    Internet usage has grown exponentially over the last decade. Research indicates that excessive Internet use can lead to symptoms associated with Addiction. To date, assessment of potential Internet Addiction has varied regarding populations studied and instruments used, making reliable prevalence estimations difficult. To overcome the present problems a preliminary study was conducted testing a parsimonious Internet Addiction components model based on Griffiths’ Addiction components (Journal of Substance Use, 10, 191–197, 2005), including salience, mood modification, tolerance, withdrawal, conflict, and relapse. Two validated measures of Internet Addiction were used (Compulsive Internet Use Scale [CIUS], Meerkerk et al. in Cyberpsychology & Behavior, 12(1), 1–6, 2009, and Assessment for Internet and Computer Game Addiction Scale [AICA-S], Wolfling et al. 2010) in two independent samples (ns = 3,105 and 2,257). The fit of the model was analysed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis. Results indicate that the Internet Addiction components model fits the data in both samples well. The two sample/two instrument approach provides converging evidence concerning the degree to which the components model can organize the self-reported behavioural components of Internet Addiction. Recommendations for future research include a more detailed assessment of tolerance as Addiction component.

    As new media are becoming daily fare, Internet Addiction appears as a potential problem in adolescents. From the reported negative consequences, it appears that Internet Addiction can have a variety of detrimental outcomes for young people that may require professional intervention. Researchers have now identified a number of activities and personality traits associated with Internet Addiction. This study aimed to synthesise previous findings by (i) assessing the prevalence of potential Internet Addiction in a large sample of adolescents, and (ii) investigating the interactions between personality traits and the usage of particular Internet applications as risk factors for Internet Addiction. A total of 3105 adolescents in the Netherlands filled out a self-report questionnaire including the Compulsive Internet Use Scale and the Quick Big Five Scale. Results indicate that 3.7% of the sample were classified as potentially being addicted to the Internet. The use of online gaming and social applications (online social networking sites and Twitter) increased the risk for Internet Addiction, whereas extraversion and conscientiousness appeared as protective factors in high frequency online gamers. The findings support the inclusion of ‘Internet Addiction’ in the DSM-V. Vulnerability and resilience appear as significant aspects that require consideration in further studies.

    The last decade has witnessed a large increase in research on the newly emerging mental health problem of Internet Addiction. Rather than looking at Internet Addiction per se, this study focused on particular activities on the Internet that might be potentially addictive and linked them to personality traits that might predispose individuals to Internet Addiction. The aims of this study were (i) to assess the prevalence of clinically significant levels of Internet Addiction, and to (ii) discern the interplay between personality traits and specific Internet uses in increasing the risk for Internet Addiction. This cross-sectional online survey used data from 2257 students of an English university. Results indicated that 3.2% of the students were classified as being addicted to the Internet. The included personality traits and uses of online activities explained 21.5% of the variance in Internet Addiction. A combination of online shopping and neuroticism decreased the risk for Internet Addiction, whereas a combination of online gaming and openness to experience increased it. In addition to this, frequent usage of online shopping and social online activities, high neuroticism and low agreeableness significantly increased the chances of being addicted to the Internet. Findings and their implications are discussed.
