a web service and interface for remote electronic device characterization
IEEE Transactions on Education, 2011Co-Authors: Sumit Dutta, Shreya Prakash, David Estrada, Eric PopAbstract:A lightweight Web Service and a Web site interface have been developed, which enable remote measurements of electronic devices as a “virtual laboratory” for undergraduate engineering classes. Using standard browsers without additional plugins (such as internet explorer, Firefox, or even Safari on an iPhone), remote users can control a Keithley source-measurement unit and monitor results in real time from anywhere on the internet. As an in-class example, students in a solid-state electronics course used the Web site interface to make real-time transistor measurements. Recommendations are made on how to best integrate the interface into electronics classes based on the student assignment responses. The present interface is flexible and could be expanded to many other devices and instruments. The source code has been openly posted online.

Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2001Co-Authors: Lynette I Millett, Batya Friedman, Edward W FeltenAbstract:We first provide criteria for assessing informed consent online. Then we examine how cookie technology and Web browser designs have responded to concerns about informed consent. Specifically, we document relevant design changes in Netscape Navigator and internet explorer over a 5-year period, starting in 1995. Our retrospective analyses leads us to conclude that while cookie technology has improved over time regarding informed consent, some startling problems remain. We specify six of these problems and offer design remedies. This work fits within the emerging field of Value-Sensitive Design.

extensible security architectures for java
Symposium on Operating Systems Principles, 1997Co-Authors: Dan S Wallach, Dirk Balfanz, Drew Dean, Edward W FeltenAbstract:Mobile code technologies such as Java, JavaScript, and ActiveX generally limit all programs to a single restrictive security policy. However, software-based protection can allow for more extensible security models, with potentially significant performance improvements over traditional hardware-based solutions. An extensible security system should be able to protect subsystems and implement policies that are created after the initial system is shipped. We describe and analyze three implementation strategies for interposing such security policies in software-based security systems. Implementations exist for all three strategies: several vendors have adapted capabilities to Java, Netscape and Microsoft have extensions to Java's stack introspection, and we built a name space management system as an add-on to Microsoft internet explorer. Theoretically, all these systems are equivalently secure, but many practical issues and implementation details favor some aspects of each system.

seasonality in vulnerability discovery in major software systems
International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering, 2008Co-Authors: Y K MalaiyaAbstract:Prediction of vulnerability discovery rates can be used to assess security risks and to determine the resources needed to develop patches quickly to handle vulnerabilities discovered. An examination of the vulnerability data suggests a seasonal behavior that has not been modeled by the recently proposed vulnerability discovery models. This seasonality has not been identified or examined so far. This study examines whether vulnerability discovery rates for Windows NT, IIS Server and the internet explorer exhibit a significant annual seasonal pattern. Actual data has been analyzed using seasonal index and auto correlation function approaches to identify seasonality and to evaluate its statistical significance. The results for the three software systems show that there is indeed a significant annual seasonal pattern.
