Interconnected Cloud Computing Environments: Challenges, Taxonomy, and Survey

Similarly, interconnected clouds, also called Inter-cloud, can be viewed as a natural evolution of cloud computing. Recent studies show the benefits in utilizing multiple clouds and present attempts for the realization of an Inter-cloud or federated cloud environment. However, cloud vendors have not taken into account cloud interoperability issues, and each cloud comes with its own solution and interfaces for services. This survey initially discusses all the relevant aspects motivating cloud interoperability. Furthermore, it categorizes and identifies possible cloud interoperability scenarios and architectures. The spectrum of challenges and obstacles that the Inter-cloud realization is faced with are covered, a taxonomy of them is provided, and fitting enablers that tackle each challenge are identified. All these aspects require a comprehensive review of the state of the art, including ongoing projects and studies in the area. We conclude by discussing future directions and trends toward the holistic approach in this regard.

Big forensic data reduction: digital forensic images and electronic evidence
Cluster Computing, 2016Co-Authors: Darren Quick, Kim-kwang Raymond ChooAbstract:An issue that continues to impact digital forensics is the increasing volume of data and the growing number of devices. One proposed method to deal with the problem of “big digital forensic data”: the volume, variety, and velocity of digital forensic data, is to reduce the volume of data at either the collection stage or the processing stage. We have developed a novel approach which significantly improves on current practice, and in this paper we outline our data volume reduction process which focuses on imaging a selection of key files and data such as: registry, documents, spreadsheets, email, Internet History, communications, logs, pictures, videos, and other relevant file types. When applied to test cases, a hundredfold reduction of original media volume was observed. When applied to real world cases of an Australian Law Enforcement Agency, the data volume further reduced to a small percentage of the original media volume, whilst retaining key evidential files and data. The reduction process was applied to a range of real world cases reviewed by experienced investigators and detectives and highlighted that evidential data was present in the data reduced forensic subset files. A data reduction approach is applicable in a range of areas, including: digital forensic triage, analysis, review, intelligence analysis, presentation, and archiving. In addition, the data reduction process outlined can be applied using common digital forensic hardware and software solutions available in appropriately equipped digital forensic labs without requiring additional purchase of software or hardware. The process can be applied to a wide variety of cases, such as terrorism and organised crime investigations, and the proposed data reduction process is intended to provide a capability to rapidly process data and gain an understanding of the information and/or locate key evidence or intelligence in a timely manner.

Home-smart Clinic is developed in order to connect medical personnel and patients remotely. Remote health monitoring system is beneficial to the patients and society where the implementation of such system will save hospital bill, waiting time and reduce traffics in the hospital. The prime objective of this paper is to design and develop heart rate measurement device for which real time data could be observed by the doctor via Internet. History data could also be acquired; therefore the doctor can interpret the trend of the data to identify the conditions of the patients. In the proposed health monitoring system, heart rate and body temperature wireless sensors were developed, however this paper only focus on heart rate monitoring system. The main components involved in this project are pulse sensor, microcontroller (Arduino with Ethernet shield), and wireless communication device (Xbee). The portable heart rate measurement device was tested to a group of voluntary students. Results showed that the real-time heart rate reading successfully monitored locally (at home) and remotely (at doctor's computer).

Towards Web Usage Attribution via Graph Community Detection in Grouped Internet Connection Records

Internet connection records can be very useful to digital forensic analysts in producing Internet History timelines and making deductions about the cause and effect of activity. However, the available data may include only a subset of the data that would be available from physical extraction. For example, the new UK legislation allows the collection of host website details, time of access and subscriber details, but not the specific uniform resource locator visited. Here, we investigate how to process data from Internet connections records to extract the websites, and construct the sessions of activity that are likely to be idiosyncratic the individual users, from the set of multiple possible users. We demonstrate how to display Internet History sessions as a network and perform graph community detection, showing a scheme for breaking up the component parts of the Internet History sessions into groups. We also introduce the use of websites' relative popularity for identifying websites that are likely to be meaningful to particular users of particular devices, further improving the accuracy of attributing a particular activity session to a particular user at a particular point in time.

Facilitating forensic examinations of multi-user computer environments through session-to-session analysis of Internet History

Gresty, Diane Gan, George Loukas, Constantinos IerotheouAbstract:This paper proposes a new approach to the forensic investigation of Internet History artefacts by aggregating the History from a recovered device into sessions and comparing those sessions to other sessions to determine whether they are one-time events or form a repetitive or habitual pattern. We describe two approaches for performing the session aggregation: fixed-length sessions and variable-length sessions. We also describe an approach for identifying repetitive pattern of life behaviour and show how such patterns can be extracted and represented as binary strings. Using the Jaccard similarity coefficient, a session-to-session comparison can be performed and the sessions can be analysed to determine to what extent a particular session is similar to any other session in the Internet History, and thus is highly likely to correspond to the same user. Experiments have been conducted using two sets of test data, where multiple users have access to the same computer. By identifying patterns of Internet usage that are unique to each user, our approach exhibits a high success rate in attributing particular sessions of the Internet History to the correct user. This can provide considerable help to a forensic investigator trying to establish which user was using the computer when a web-related crime was committed.
