    Abstract:

    Objective To observe and analyse the application of Isotonic Solution nasal irrigation in repair after nasal endoscopic surgery. Methods A total of 375 patients with nasal endoscopic surgery were randomly divided into control group (191 cases) and observation group (184 cases) by random numbers. The patients of control group received routine nursing, while the patients of observation group underwent routine nursing and nasal irrigation. We compared postoperative recovery of nasal mucosa and nasal cavity adhesion of two groups. Results Nasal mucosa recovery of patients in observation group after operation was better than that of control group. Lund-Kennedy endoscopic mucosal pattern grading in control group was (4.62±1.45) points, comparing with observation group (3.28±0.94) points; sinus CT grading in control group was (5.51±2.36) points, comparing with (4.18±1.97) points in observation group (P<0.05). Conclusions Isotonic Solution nasal irrigation after nasal endoscopic sinus opening surgery is benefit for the recovery of surgery area, can promote wound healing, and improve the success rate of surgery. The same occurred when the parameters between Isotonic Solution and nutritional supplementation were compared 2 hours after ingestion. Only one patient had vol.w−1 1.5 mL.kg−1 after ingestion of Isotonic Solution. Conclusion This study demonstrated that gastric emptying of equal volumes of different Solutions depends on their constitution. Those with high caloric and high osmolarity, and with proteins present, 2 hours after ingestion, increased the gastric volumes, which is compatible with the risk of gastric aspiration.

    Background and objectives The current preoperative fasting guidelines allow fluid intake up to 2 h before surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the gastric volume of volunteers after an overnight fast and compare it with the gastric volume 2 h after ingestion of 200 and 500 mL of Isotonic Solution, by means of ultrasound assessment. Method Eighty volunteers underwent gastric ultrasound at three times: after 8 h of fasting; 2 h after ingestion of 200 mL Isotonic saline, followed by the first scan; and on another day, 2 h after ingestion of 500 mL of the same Solution after an overnight fast. The evaluation was quantitative (antrum area and gastric volume, and the ratio of participants’ gastric volume/weight) and qualitative (absence or presence of gastric contents on right lateral decubitus and supine positions. A p-value < 0.05 was considered significant). Results There was no difference in quantitative variables at measurement times (p > 0.05). Five volunteers (6.25%) had a volume/weight over 1.5 mL kg−1 at fasting and 2 h after ingestion of 200 mL and 6 (7.5%) after 500 mL. Qualitatively, the presence of gastric fluid occurred in more volunteers after fluid ingestion, especially 500 mL (18.7%), although not statistically significant. Conclusion Ultrasound assessment of gastric volume showed no significant difference, both qualitative and quantitative, 2 h after ingestion of 200 mL or 500 mL of Isotonic Solution compared to fasting, although gastric fluid content has been identified in more volunteers, especially after ingestion of 500 mL Isotonic Solution.

    Despite the importance of hydration during exercise, the impact of ingesting water or Isotonic Solution during and after exercise on the regulation of autonomic modulation is unclear. The study aimed to compare the effect of ingesting water or Isotonic Solution (Gatorade®, Brazil) on cardiac autonomic modulation in young people after submaximal aerobic exercise. Thirty-one young men were subjected to a protocol consisting of 4 steps: 1) incremental test, 2) control protocol without hydration, 3) protocol with ingestion of water, and 4) protocol with ingestion of Isotonic Solution. The protocol consisted of 10 min of rest, 90 min of treadmill exercise at 60% VO2peak, and 60 min of recovery at rest. In the hydration protocols, hydration occurred during and after exercise, every 15 min beginning after the 15th minute of exercise, with the amount ingested proportional to body mass lost in the control protocol. Autonomic modulation was evaluated by heart rate variability. The hydration protocols promoted a more efficient recovery of autonomic modulation, and for the exercise performed, regardless of the hydration administered, the effect on autonomic modulation was similar.

    Abstract:

    With prolonged physical activity, it is important to maintain adequate fluid balance. The impact of consuming Isotonic drinks during and after exercise on the autonomic regulation of cardiac function is unclear. This study aimed to analyze the effects of consuming an Isotonic drink on heart rate variability (HRV) during and after prolonged exercise. Thirty-one young males (21.55 ± 1.89 yr) performed three different protocols (48 h interval between each stage): I) maximal exercise test to determine the load for the protocols; II) Control protocol (CP) and; III). Experimental protocol (EP). The protocols consisted of 10 min at rest with the subject in the supine position, 90 min of treadmill exercise (60% of VO2 peak) and 60 min of rest placed in the dorsal decubitus position. No rehydration beverage consumption was allowed during CP. During EP, however, the subjects were given an Isotonic Solution (Gatorade, Brazil) containing carbohydrate (30 g), sodium (225 mg), chloride (210 mg) and potassium (60 mg) per 500 ml of the drink. For analysis of HRV data, time and frequency domain indices were investigated. HRV was recorded at rest (5–10 min), during exercise (25–30 min, 55–60 min and 85–90 min) and post-exercise (5–10 min, 15–20 min, 25–30 min, 40–45 min and 55–60 min). Regardless of hydration, alterations in the SNS and PSNS were observed, revealing an increase in the former and a decrease in the latter. Hydrating with Isotonic Solution during recovery induced significant changes in cardiac autonomic modulation, promoting faster recovery of linear HRV indices. Hydration with Isotonic Solution did not significantly influence HRV during exercise; however, after exercise it promoted faster recovery of linear indices.

    Abstract:

    Calcium and iron fortification of vegetables by applying vacuum impregnation is an alternative in developing functional foods. The interaction between these components and plant tissue may induce changes to enriched foods behaviour during its processing. In this paper, the effect of Ca and Fe ions incorporation in the structural matrix of apple (var. Granny Smith) slices on its behaviour during the osmotic dehydration process at 30 °C has been studied according to the model suggested by Fito and Chiralt [Food Engineering 2000, 1996, p. 231]. Low concentrations of minerals employed seemed not to affect net changes of mass, water and solutes of impregnated samples. Only calcium capability to strengthen cell structures seemed to diminish effective diffusivity values. The loss of Ca and Fe ions that takes place, even when an Isotonic Solution is used, has to be taken into account when preparing the impregnating Solution, mainly when a specific concentration of minerals in the final product is required.

    Abstract Apple cylinders (Granny Smith) were dried in a combined hot air–microwave system. Drying experiments were carried out at various air temperatures (25, 30, 40 and 50 °C) combined with different levels of microwave incident power (0, 3, 5, 7 and 10 W/g) until 0.11 (d.b.) moisture content was obtained. Vacuum impregnation with an Isotonic Solution was used as a pretreatment before drying. Sample weight changes were determined for different drying conditions. When drying with combined air–microwave system, the drying rate curve could be divided in four periods limited by four critical points. An empirical model was proposed to estimate the drying kinetic constants as a function of the air temperature and the microwave power level for both sorts of samples, fresh apples and impregnated apples. At the end of the process different tissue matrices were obtained depending on the different drying conditions.

    Obiettivo Scopo del nostro lavoro è stato quello di valutare la capacità diagnostica dell’enteroclisi con TC multidetettore (E-TCMD) dopo somministrazione orale di soluzione Isotonica in pazienti affetti da morbo di Crohn (MC). Materiali e metodi Sono stati esaminati 28 pazienti con diagnosi ileocoloscopica ed istologica di morbo di Crohn (MC), 6 pazienti con ileoconoscopia negativa per MC sono stati utilizzati come gruppo di controllo. In tutti i pazienti l’esame è stato eseguito dopo somministrazione orale di 2000 ml di una soluzione Isotonica e infusione endovenosa di un agente spasmolitico. In tutti i casi sono state utilizzate immagini assiali, ricostruzioni multiplanari e volume rendering, e sono stati determinati: lo spessore di parete delle anse, la presenza di ulcerazioni parietali, l’attenuazione post-contrastografica, l’interessamento extraparietale e la presenza di eventuali complicanze. Risultati L’E-TCMD ha dimostrato una sensibilità del 92,8 % e una specificità del 100% (VPP 100%, VPN 75%), identificando i segni propri della malattia in 26 pazienti. Conclusioni L’E-TCMD con somministrazione orale di soluzione Isotonica consente di valutare con elevata accuratezza le alterazioni dell’intestino tenue in pazienti affetti da MC, dimostrandosi valida alternativa agli studi radiologici convenzionali, specie nei pazienti che rifiutano l’intubazione naso-digiunale. Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) enteroclysis after oral hyperhydration with Isotonic Solution in detecting bowel wall alterations in patients with Crohn’s disease. Materials and methods Twenty-eight patients with a diagnosis of Crohn’s disease established by ileocolonoscopy and histology were enrolled in the study; 15 patients with negative ileocolonoscopy served as controls. In all cases, MDCT enteroclysis was performed after oral administration of 2,000 ml of Isotonic Solution and intravenous administration of N-butylscopolamine. Axial, isotropic multiplanar and volume-rendered reconstructions were used to evaluate bowel wall thickness, ulceration, contrast enhancement, extraparietal involvement and possible complications. Results MDCT enteroclysis identified the typical signs of Crohn’s disease in 26 patients (92.8%), with sensitivity of 92.8%, specificity of 100%, positive predictive value 100% and negative predictive value 75%. Conclusions MDCT enteroclysis after oral hyperhydration with Isotonic Solution showed a high level of accuracy in detecting small bowel changes in patients with Crohn’s disease. It can be considered a safe and effective alternative to conventional radiography and small-bowel spiral computed tomography enema, especially in patients who refuse nasojejunal intubation.
