    A specification for Java in safety critical systems is being developed by The Open Group under the Java Community Process. The JSR-302 Expert Group has begun work to create this specification based on the Real-Time Specification for Java (RTSJ) that will include a set of reduced functionality for safety critical applications. The goal is to facilitate safety critical Java applications capable of DO-178B Level A certification.

    Abstract:

    The Distributed Real-Time Specification for Java (DRTSJ) is being developed under Sun's Java Community Process. It is focused on supporting predictable, end-to-end timeliness for sequentially distributed computations (e.g., chains of invocations) in dynamic distributed object systems. This paper reports on an investigation to integrate and extend the existing real-time specification for Java and Java's Remote Method Invocation facility to provide the basis for the DRTSJ.

    Abstract:

    Safety Critical Java is a specification designed to case development and analysis of safety critical programs that must be certified. Since it is being developed with the Java Community Process, a Technology Compatibility Kit is required so that all aspiring implementations can check for conformance to the specification. In this paper, we present design considerations for an open source compatibility kit. Also we present initial experiments in using our kit to test a reference implementation being developed concurrently with the specification. The testing results are reported and discussed.
