Ocorrência e tratamento de sarna knemidocóptica (Knemidokoptes sp.) em aves de companhia atendidas na Faculdade de Veterinária da Universidade Federal Fluminense, RJ, Brasil

Este trabalho tem como objetivo relatar a ocorrência da sarna knemidocóptica em aves de companhia atendidas no Setor de Animais Selvagens da Faculdade de Veterinária da Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), ressaltando as principais espécies acometidas e a eficácia do tratamento clínico estabelecido. No período entre janeiro de 2000 e junho de 2006, 374 aves foram atendidas no Setor; 25 delas eram portadoras de ectoparasitos, das quais 68% (n=17) com diagnóstico de sarna knemidocóptica. As lesões associadas à presença do Knemidokoptes sp. ocorreram principalmente na região dos pés em 14 aves (82,4%), sendo os Passeriformes (Serinus canarius) os mais acometidos com 14 casos (82,4%), seguidos de três casos (17,7%) em Psitaciformes (Melopsittacus undulatus). Os sinais clínicos constituíram-se de lesões hiperqueratosas e deformidade de dígitos. A confirmação do diagnóstico foi realizada por meio, da identificação microscópica do ácaro a partir de raspado cutâneo da área infestada. Em 15 pacientes portadores da sarna knemidocóptica, entre Passeriformes e Psitaciformes, administrou-se pomada composta por sulfureto de potássio 3g 100g-1 e carbonato de potássio 3g 100g-1 associados uma vez ao dia, em dias alternados, por quatorze dias. Apenas dois pacientes (11,8%) foram tratados com aplicação tópica de solução à base de benzoato de benzila 25%, na mesma freqüência e duração do tratamento anterior. Foi intercalado o uso de óleo mineral puro 100%, aplicado topicamente duas vezes ao dia, em ambos os tratamentos. Nos casos mais graves (três pacientes), associou-se ao tratamento 0,06ml de ivermectina 1% pour on em dose única. Os pacientes submetidos a esses tratamentos obtiveram em sua totalidade a cura clínica

The purpose of this paper is to describe the occurrence and treatments of pet birds cared at the Wild Animals Sector of the Veterinary Medicine College - Universidade Federal Fluminense, with emphasis on the species most commonly affected and the efficiency of its treatment. Between January 2000 and June 2006, 374 birds were cared and 25 cases of ectoparasitosis were diagnosed. The prevalence of knemidocoptic mange was of 68% (n= 17). Cutaneous lesions on the feet and legs occurred in 14 cases (82.4%). The Passeriformes (Serinus canarius) were most affected with 14 cases (82.4%), followed by three cases (17.7%) in Psittaciformes (Melopsittacus undulatus). Hyperkeratotic skin lesions with deformity of digits were observed. The skin scraping examination confirmed the diagnosis of knemidocoptic mange. The treatment of knemidocoptic mange on 15 birds among Passeriformes and Psittaciformes, was done with sulphide carbonate 3g 100mg-1 and potassium carbonate 3g 100mg-1 applied to them every other day, for two weeks. Only two patients (11.8%) were treated with topical application of benzyl benzoate solution 25% in the same frequency and duration of the previous treatment. Mineral oil 100% was used twice a day directly on the lesions alternating with the other treatments. Three patients showed severe knemidocoptic lesions that were associated with a single dose (0.06ml) of ivermectin 1% pour on. The patients submitted to these treatments reached clinical cure in 100% of the cases.

Ectoparasites of the black-chinned siskin Spinus barbatus (Passeriformes: Fringillidae) in Chile

This paper aims to describe the ectoparasite fauna of S. barbatus in central and southern Chile. A total of 125 individuals caught with mist nets were examined alive; a total of 22 parasites were found dead and were exposed to parasit autopsy. The extracted parasites were preserved in 70% alcohol for subsequent mounting and identification. Ectoparasites were found in 56 black-chinned siskins (38%); 48 of them (33%) had 870 mites – 680 feather mites (Astigmata: Analgoidea) were identified as Proctophyllodes spini, 167 as Knemidokoptes jamaicensis, 19 as Strelkoviacarus critesi, and one as Analges passerinus. Moreover, three mites were chiggers belonging to the tribe Schoengastiini (Prostigmata: Trombiculidae). In 21 birds (14%), 54 lice were found, 21 of which were identified as Philopterus roehreri, 18 as Myrsidea serini, and 15 as Ricinus carolynae. Endoparasites were not found in the necropsied individuals. All of the parasites that were found represent new records for Chile, and they also serve as new records of host–parasite associations for S. barbatus.

Non‐random infection across individuals and populations supports that parasites can change morphology within an adaptive radiation
Journal of Zoology, 2010Co-Authors: Pim Edelaar, K. Van EerdeAbstract:Adaptive radiation is characterized by rapid phenotypic diversification as a result of utilizing different environments. Red crossbills (Loxia curvirostra Linnaeus - complex) have diversified in bill size and shape, and overall size, in response to differences in the conifer cones that hold the seeds they almost exclusively feed upon. However, a recent study showed how a bill of suboptimal size for foraging has evolved due to antagonistic selection by scaly leg mites Knemidokoptes jamaicensis. This suggests that the current variation in morphology within the adaptive radiation of crossbills may not be exclusively the result of adaptation to alternative resources. Using an independent set of populations, we found that the surprising and little-understood relationship between crossbill morphology and infection with mites is repeatable. Assuming mites depress survival, this relationship would result in directional, not stabilizing selection on morphology. We also find that the rates of infection can differ dramatically between populations, potentially depending on their ecologies. These findings suggest that morphological evolution within the adaptive radiation of crossbills may partly occur for reasons unrelated to resource use.
