Effect of regulated deficit irrigation scheduling on water use of corn in southern Taiwan tropical environment

This study was conducted to determine an effective water application depth for improving agricultural water use (irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) and water use efficiency (WUE)) in surface irrigated corn production, and to determine an effective rooting depth for irrigation planning in a tropical region. The effect of five irrigation treatments on corn growth, yield and root extraction patterns were investigated and assessed. The treatments included a full irrigation treatment with a water application depth of 6cm (T5), and four deficit irrigation (DI) treatments with depths of: 5cm (T4), 4cm (T3), 3cm (T2) and 2cm (T1). Irrigation water was applied to all treatments when soil moisture for T5 was depleted by 40%. Seasonal water applied varied from 235 to 555mm while the seasonal crop evapotranspiration ranged from 331 to 605mm. Analysis based on experimental vertical moisture profiles and ASAR/ENVISAT measurements has been carried out. A modified IEM model with three permittivity layers (0-1cm, 1-2cm, 2-5cm) has been developed and used in this study. Results show a small effect of moisture profile on the backscattered signal (less than 0.5dB). However, measurements and simulations have provided a more detailed insight into the behaviour of the radar signal and have shown that it was important to consistently use the same protocol when performing ground truth measurements of soil moisture.

Extracellular matrix proteins and matrix metalloproteinases differ between various right and left ventricular sites in end-stage cardiomyopathies

SchnabelAbstract:This study was undertaken to investigate whether there might be differences in the distribution of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), depending on their specific sites within the heart. We investigated 33 explanted human hearts, 15 with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and 18 with ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM). Transmural samples from the right ventricle, the interventricular septum and the left ventricle, either from near the apex or from near the base were taken from every heart. Frozen sections were processed for connective tissue staining and immunohistochemistry for collagens type I, III, IV, laminin and fibronectin, as well as MMP-1, -2 and -9. Volume densities of laminin in ICM as well as of fibronectin and collagen types I and IV in DCM showed significant differences between right and left ventricular sites. The volume densities of matrix proteins usually did not reveal significant differences among the three left ventricular sites tested in both DCM and ICM. MMPs partly showed differences between the right and the left ventricular myocardium. These results suggest that the distributions of ECM proteins and MMPs differ between the two ventricles in both end-stage DCM and ICM. This gives rise to the hypothesis that a specific pattern of ECM degradation exists in the right and left ventricular myocardium.

Across a variety of platforms, we find OCB to be substantially faster than either alternative. For example, on an Intel i5 ("Clarkdale") processor, good implementations of CCM, GCM, and OCB encrypt at around 4.2 cpb, 3.7 cpb, and 1.5 cpb, while CTR mode requires about 1.3 cpb. Still we find room for algorithmic improvements to OCB, showing how to trim one blockcipher call (most of the time, assuming a counter-based nonce) and reduce latency. Our findings contrast with those of McGrew and Viega (2004), who claimed similar performance for GCM and OCB.
