  • the pure types of Legitimate Domination forces and limits of a trilogy
    Sociologie, 2014
    Co-Authors: Yves Sintomer, Jeremie Gauthier
    Abstract:

"The critical German edition of Max Weber’s work, together with the French translation of some of its fundamental texts, gives the opportunity to shed new light upon the pure types of Legitimate Domination. This article scrutinizes the genesis of the three ideal types and analyzes the question of the trilogy. It demonstrates that other choices were theoretically possible, insisting especially on feudal Domination and output legitimacy ; this enables, in turn, to underline the specificity of Weber’s analysis. The quickly abandoned Weberian idea of a fourth – democratic – mode of Legitimate Domination is a symptom of the difficulty that the sociologist faces when he needs to conceptualize and concretely analyze democracy or the resistance of the subalterns. These reflections impel towards the construction of a pure ideal type of democracy – or of democratization – which, in order to be able to analyze empirical sociopolitical developments, should be articulated with the pure types of Legitimate Domination."

  • Weber Reinvents Charisma
    2020
    Co-Authors: John Potts
    Abstract:

Charisma as theorised and defined by Max Weber (1864–1920) is one those terms, like Thomas Kuhn’s ‘paradigm shift’, that has exerted an influence far beyond the discipline in which it was first encased. Weber articulated ‘charisma’ as one of three forms of authority within his massive work Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft, published posthumously in German in 1922, translated to English first in 1947 and later in 1968 as Economy and Society.1 Unfinished and spanning almost 1500 pages, Economy and Society was a summation of Weber’s sociological purview of social structure and world history. His definition and detailing of his theory of charisma, scattered throughout Economy and Society, and in several other minor works, installs charisma as a central concept within Weber’s theory of Legitimate Domination, which in turn constituted one element in the vast Weberian sociological apparatus.

  • The Relevance of Weber’s Conception and Typology of Herrschaft
The Oxford Handbook of Max Weber, 2019
    Co-Authors: Stefan Breuer
    Abstract:

Max Weber developed his sociology of Domination between 1909 and 1920. This chapter addresses the relationship between Domination and power, distinguishing between Legitimate and ilLegitimate Domination or authority. Legitimate Domination is based upon the three pure types of legal, traditional, and charismatic Domination, which appear in combination with different organizational structures. Charismatic Domination can assume different forms, from authentic charisma to hereditary and office charisma to an antiauthoritarian variant. Traditional Domination encompasses a variety of types, from gerontocracy to diverse forms of patrimonialism and feudalism. The belief in legality, expressed for instance in a bureaucratic administrative staff, is characterized primarily through formal rationality, not purposive or instrumental rationality. Thus, today this last type is affected by tendencies that promote the weakening or even the dissolution of legal formalism. This chapter combines a systematic presentation with the application of the “Domination” topic in the different scientific and cultural research fields during the last decades.
