Four new species are described from the Arabian Peninsula: L. macroctenus sp. n. from coastal fog deserts in Oman; L. haenggii sp. n. from mountains of the Red Sea coast, Hadramaut and Dhofar, in Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Oman; L. arabicus sp. n. from the central Najd Plateau and eastern plains in Saudi Arabia; and L. heberti sp. n. from Jabal Samhan in Oman. L. brachycentrus (Ehrenberg, 1829) stat. n. from the Tihamah plain of the Red Sea coast in Saudi Arabia and Yemen is restored from synonymy and redescribed. Leiurus nasheri Kovařík, 2007 was found to be a junior synonym of L. brachycentrus stat. n. L. quinquestriatus hebraeus (Birula, 1908) is elevated to species level as L. hebraeus (Birula, 1908) stat. n. Revised diagnoses are given for L. quinquestriatus (Ehrenberg, 1828), L. abdullahbayrami Yağmur, Koç et Kunt, 2009, L. jordanensis Lourenço, Modrý et Amr, 2002, and L. hebraeus (Birula, 1908). Key characters used to diagnose and separate species include morphometrics, granulation, tricho-bothriotaxy, tarsal setation, dentition of metasomal carinae and color pattern. The case history of a toxic sting of a Leiurus abdullahbayrami scorpion in Turkey

Nevertheless, they are not well documented in the literature and were never reported for the recently described scorpion species Leiurus abdullahbayrami Yağmur, Koç & Kunt, 2009. Here, we report a case in which a 30-year-old male was stung by a L. abdullahbayrami scorpion in the field. He was directly brought to the emergency department of the local hospital. The symptomatic process was observed and documented. In this case, no antivenom was necessary; we hypothesize that the scorpion has used most of its venom in a previous incident (explained in further detail below) and was therefore not able to inject a normal dosage

İncelenen örnekler 01.04.2006-20.08.2010 tarihleri arasında Güneydoğu Anadolu ve çevresindeki illerden toplanmıştır. Arazi çalışmaları sonucunda 265 lokaliteden 1316 örnek toplanmıştır. Güneydoğu Anadolu Bölgesi’nde yer alan illerde örnekler toplanmış ve tespit edilen türlerin zoocoğrafik yayılışlarının gözlenmesi açısından da bu illerin çevresindeki illerde de arazi çalışmaları yapılmıştır. Ayrıca daha önceki tarihlerde toplanmış olan müze materyalleri de değerlendirilmiştir. Toplanan örneklerden Leiurus abdullahbayrami Yağmur et al., 2009 yeni bir tür olarak değerlendirilmiş ve deskripsyonu yapılmıştır. Mesobuthus eupeus phillipsii alttürü Türkiye’den, Iurus asiaticus türü ise Güneydoğu Anadolu Bölgesi’nden ilk kez kaydedilmiştir. The description is fully complemented with color photographs of live and preserved specimens, as well as of their habitats. This increases the known diversity of the genus to 14 species

Marshall Digital Scholar, 2015Co-Authors: Kovařík FrantišekAbstract:Lectotypes are designated for Androctonus (Leiurus) leptochelys Ehrenberg, 1829, Androctonus (Leiurus) thebanus Ehrenberg, 1828 and Androctonus (Leiurus) macrocentrus Ehrenberg, 1828. In recent papers the latter two species have been regarded as synonyms of Buthacus leptochelys, however its type series is composed of seven specimens that in reality belong to three species. The type series of Androctonus leptochelys includes specimens belonging to Buthacus leptochelys and Buthacus spatzi (Birula, 1911), and the type series of Androctonus macrocentrus includes specimens belonging to Buthacus leptochelys and Buthacus tadmorensis (Simon, 1892). In order to preserve stability, I designate as the lectotype of A. leptochelys a specimen that does not cause changes in the taxonomic position of Buthacus leptochelys and its complex. Upon designation of the lectotype of A. macrocentrus (Fig. 8), it becomes a valid species Buthacus macrocentrus (Ehrenberg, 1828) stat. n. with the synonyms Buthus tadmorensis Simon, 1892, Buthus pietschmanni Penther, 1912 and Buthacus yotvatensis Levy, Amitai & Shulov, 1973. Buthacus mahraouii Lourenço, 2004 from Morocco is considered a nomen dubium because its description is confused and characters unclear, which precludes determination of whether it belongs to the Buthacus leptochelys complex or the Buthacus arenicola complex. Buthacus ehrenbergi sp. n. from Mauritania is described. This new species belongs in the Buthacus leptochelys complex and has tibial spurs moderate on legs IV and extremely reduced on legs III, which distinguishes it from the other two species of Buthacus known to occur in Mauritania. B. huberi Lourenço, 2001 has tibial spurs on legs III and IV reduced, and B. occidentalis Vachon, 1953 has them moderately well developed. A key to the species of the genus Buthacus is also presented

Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases, 2011Co-Authors: Ozcan Ozkan, Ersen Aydin Yagmur, M ArkAbstract:Currently, medically significant scorpion species belong to the Buthidae family and are represented by the genera Androctonus, Buthus, Mesobuthus, Hottentotta, Parabuthus, Tityus, Centruroides, Leiurus. Although Leiurus was originally considered a monotypic genus, four additional species have since been described. Leiurus abdullahbayrami (previously identified as L. quinquestriatus in Turkey) was classified as a new Leiurus species. This is the first report conducted on the lethality and biologic effects of L. abdullahbayrami scorpion venom in mice. In this study, the electrophoretic protein pattern of its venom was also determined. Two protein bands with molecular masses of 4 and 6 kDa were more strongly detected than other protein bands in the venom sample. Electrophoresis showed that L. abdullahbayrami scorpion venom possesses both short- and long-chain neurotoxins. The median lethal dose of this venom was found to be 0.19 mg/kg by subcutaneous (SC) injection in mice. Animals experimentally envenomed with L. abdullahbayrami venom exhibited hyperexcitability, agitation, aggressive behavior, squeaking and fighting, tachypnea, weakness, convulsions, and death due to cardiac and respiratory failure. In further studies, the potency of antivenom should be investigated in relation to the scorpion venom. Molecular and pharmacological studies are also required to identify and characterize L. abdullahbayrami scorpion venom.

Scorpion stings in Turkey: epidemiological and clinical aspects between the years 1995 and 2004 Picadas de escorpião na Turquia: aspectos epidemiológicos e clínicos entre os anos de 1995 e 2004
Universidade de São Paulo, 2010Co-Authors: Ozcan OzkanAbstract:The most important health-threatening scorpions found in Turkey are; Androctonus crassicauda, Leiurus quinquestriatus, Mesobuthus gibbosus and M. eupeus species, all of which belong to the Buthidae family. The epidemiological and clinical findings of scorpion stings in Turkey were evaluated between the years 1995 and 2004 based on data recorded in the National Poison Information Center (NPIC). A total of 930 cases were recorded. The cases mostly occurred in the month of July. The gender distribution was 50.22% female and 45.48% male. It was shown that the 20-29 age group presented more scorpion stings. Most of the stings occurred in Central Anatolia and Marmara regions of Turkey. Patients at the hospital showed signs of localized (pain, hyperemia, edema and numbness) and systemic effects (hyperthermia, nausea and vomiting, tachycardia, shivering and lethargy) but no lethality was notified. According to records, 33% of the poisoned patients were treated with antivenin in healthcare facilities.Os mais importantes escorpiões que comprometem a saúde na Turquia são: Androctonus crassicauda, Leiurus quinquestriatus, Mesobuthus gibbosus e M. eupeus, todos eles pertencentes à família Buthidae. Os achados clínicos e epidemiológicos da picada de escorpiões na Turquia foram avaliados no período entre os anos de 1995 a 2004 baseados em dados do Centro Nacional de Informações de Envenenamentos (NPIC). Foram registrados 930 casos que ocorreram principalmente no mês de julho. A distribuição por sexo foi 50,22% femininos e 45,48% masculinos. Demonstrou-se que o grupo etário de 20 a 29 anos apresentou maior número de picadas de escorpião. A maior parte das picadas ocorreu na Anatólia Central e na região de Marmara, na Turquia. Os pacientes hospitalizados mostraram sinais localizados (dor, hiperemia, edema e confusão mental) e sistêmicos (hipertermia, náusea e vômitos, taquicardia, arrepios de frio e letargia), mas não houve notificação de letalidade. De acordo com os prontuários 33% dos pacientes foram tratados com antiveneno nas unidades de saúde

Adiguzel, Mustafa ErtekAbstract:The two most venomous species of the family Buthidae, Leiurus quinquestriatus and Androctonus crassicauda, are found in Africa and in the Middle East. Potency and paraspecific activities of A. crassicauda antivenom (RSHC anti-Ac) were tested against L. quinquestriatus venom. The sera produced by Refik Saydam Hygiene Center (RSHC) showed strong reactivity against the venoms of A. crassicauda and L. quinquestriatus in western blotting and dot-blot analysis. RSHC anti-Ac presents immunoactivity and neutralizing potential against Leiurus quinquestriatus venom. Neutralization capacity of antivenom was found to be 400 µL against 40 minimum lethal doses (MLD) of A. crassicauda scorpion venom and 10 MLD of L. quinquestriatus venom. This study indicates that the RSHC anti-Ac could be used for treating L. quinquestriatus stings.
