    Abstract:

    We have studied the phycological diversity at the Natural Park of Serra da Enciña da Lastra (Ourense, Spain) and present here the algae checklist of the Galir river, the only permanent fluvial course in the area. This geographical zone is a SCI (Site of Community Importance) and is located within an European Nature Reserve belonging to the “Nature 2000” network. Despite its environmental importance there is no previous phycological survey to this study. We collected samples in three points along the river, and measured physical and chemical water parameters (pH, conductivity, temperature, and dissolved oxygen). The checklist includes 88 taxa: 6 Cyanophyta, 4 Rhodophyta, 60 Heterokontophyta (58 Bacillariophyceae, 2 Xantophyceae), 1 Dinophyta, 2 Euglenophyta, and 15 Chlorophyta. Within the Rhodophyta we highlight the presence of Lemanea condensata, as a new record to the Iberian Peninsula. In addition, we have identified 8 new records for Galicia and 14 for Ourense.Se ha estudiado la diversidad ficológica del río Galir, el único curso fluvial permanente del Parque Natural Serra da Enciña da Lastra (Orense, España). Es un Lugar de Importancia Comunitaria (LIC) incluido en la red de espacios naturales “Natura 2000”. A pesar de su importancia ambiental, no hay ningún estudio ficológico previo al presente.     Abstract:

    Biosynthesis of gold nanoparticles has been accomplished via reduction of an aqueous chloroauric acid solution with the dried biomass of an edible freshwater epilithic red alga, Lemanea fluviatilis (L.) C.Ag., as both reductant and stabilizer. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by UV–visible, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies. The UV–visible spectrum of the synthesized gold nanoparticles showed the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) at around 530 nm. The powder XRD pattern furnished evidence for the formation of face-centered cubic structure of gold having average crystallite size 5.9 nm. The TEM images showed the nanoparticles to be polydispersed, nearly spherical in shape and have sizes in the range 5–15 nm. The photoluminescence spectrum of the gold nanoparticles excited at 300 nm showed blue emission at around 440 nm. Gold nanoparticles loaded within the biomatrix studied using a modified 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method exhibited pronounced antioxidant activity.

    Abstract:

    An ethnobotanical study of an edible fresh water red alga  Lemanea fluviatilis (L.) C.Ag. was carried out in the Thoubal district of Manipur State, India. The alga locally known as nungsham, due to its hair like growth on stone, grows profusely in the rocky and shallow river beds of the Chakpi and Manipur rivers. In earlier reports, the alga was misidentified as Lemanea australis. Harvested by the women of the Meitei, Kuki and Kuki-Chin-Mizo communites, the sun dried alga is sold in the local market. The dried filaments are eaten with major meals. A total of 23 strategically selected informants have been interviewed through structured questionnaires to obtain indigenous knowledge about the alga and its uses. Detailed morphological and reproductive features are described to reveal the correct taxonomic status of the species. Some ethnopharmacological information is also incorporated.

    Abstract:

    Cell walls of the generic phase of the freshwater red alga Lemanea annulata Kutz were mechanically isolated and chemically characterized. Walls consisted mainly of polysaccharide with lesser quantities of associated protein and lipid. The major wall component was alkali-soluble xylan, comprised mainly of 4-linked β-xylopyranosyl residues and small amounts of 3-O-substituted β-xylopyranosyl residues. Hot water extracts yielded non-sulfated polymers, with 3- or 3,4-linked β-galactosyl residues alternating with 4-linked α-glucuronosyl residues as the predominant structural features. This acid polysaccharide shares many characteristics of the mucilage previously described from the freshwater genus Batrachospermum. Isolated cell walls of L. annulata contained approximately 6% cellulose. Cellobiohydrolase/colloidal gold labelling of cell walls revealed β-4-glycan throughout the fibrillar portion of the wall. Wall protein consisted of at least 17 amino acids, of which threonine and alanine were the most abundant. Polysaccharides of the cell walls of L. annulata differ from those of marine red algae and are similar to those described for other Batrachospermales.
