valerian Lemon Balm use for sleep disorders during menopause
Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, 2013Co-Authors: S Taavoni, Neda Nazem Ekbatani, Hamid HaghaniAbstract:Abstract The onset of Menopause in women is frequently associated with sleep disruption with hot flushes intensifying problems. Thus the use of supplementary drugs to ameliorate these symptoms is of significance. Objectives The purpose of this research was to determine whether valerian/Lemon Balm could assist by enhancing sleep patterns in this client group. Methods 100 women aged 50–60 years who complained of sleep disorders were studied. Subjects were selected randomly in a sampling method utilizing two groups of 50 people (intervention group with valerian/Lemon Balm and placebo group). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was administered pre and post-intervention. Results A significant difference was observed with reduced levels of sleep disorders amongst the experimental group when compared to the placebo group. Conclusion Valerian/Lemon Balm may assist in reducing symptoms of sleep disorder during the menopause.

moisture sorption isotherms and isosteric heat of sorption of leaves and stems of Lemon Balm melissa officinalis l established by dynamic vapor sorption
Lwt - Food Science and Technology, 2012Co-Authors: Dimitrios Argyropoulos, Rainer Alex, Robert Kohler, Joachim MullerAbstract:The equilibrium moisture contents (MC) of leaves and stems of Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis L.) were determined separately at temperatures of 25, 35 and 45 °C over a stepwise increase of relative humidity (RH) ranging from 3 to 90% by an automatic, gravimetric analyzer (DVS system). Equilibrium was achieved within 6 h for most of the target values of relative humidity. The equilibrium moisture content of leaves was significantly higher than that of stems (p < 0.05). Differences in moisture sorption capacity between the leaves and stems can be attributed to chemical composition and structure of the tissues. Five three-parameter moisture sorption models (modifications of Chung–Pfost, GAB, Halsey, Henderson and Oswin) were tested for their effectiveness to fit the experimental sorption data. The modified Oswin equation was found to be the best model to describe the adsorption isotherms of both leaves and stems of Lemon Balm. The recommended MC values of leaves and stems for microbial safe storage at 25 °C were 0.124 and 0.113 kg water per kg dry solids, respectively. The net isosteric heat of sorption was computed from the predicted sorption data by applying the integrated form of the Clausius–Clapeyron equation.

tolerability and efficacy of valerian Lemon Balm in healthy volunteers a double blind placebo controlled multicentre study
Fitoterapia, 1999Co-Authors: Andreas Cerny, K SchmidAbstract:Abstract This clinical study was conducted to evaluate the tolerability and efficacy of a new galenic formulation of a herbal sleeping aid, a valerian/Lemon Balm combination, to treat minor sleep disorders. The study was performed according to a randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel group, multicentre design with healthy volunteers. Primary parameters were the assessment of the overall tolerability and the incidence of adverse events. Secondary parameters included laboratory tests, physical examination and assessments of well-being and sleep quality. The preparation proved to be well tolerated by most subjects (93% of the participants in the valerian/Lemon Balm group and 91% in the placebo group). There was no statistically significant difference concerning the frequency of adverse events between the two treatment groups (valerian/Lemon Balm 29%, placebo 28%) and no serious adverse events were reported. No significant changes were seen in regard to laboratory tests, physical examination and rating of well-being. In contrast, the valerian/Lemon Balm group revealed a significantly higher quality of sleep (33%) compared to the placebo group (9%), P-value=0.04. In conclusion, these results indicate that this valerian/Lemon Balm formulation is well tolerated.
