    Abstract:

    : Four of the 43 genera of South American Leptophlebiidae are dipterous. A previous phylogenetic hypothesis supported that clade Askola+Hagenulopsis, and that Bessierus+Perissophlebiodes, are sister groups of the Farrodes complex. Adults of Bessierus and Perissophlebiodes were not known but posteriorly Perissophlebiodes male imago was described. Here, we describe the male imago of Bessierus for the first time. Both genera share, besides the absence of the hind wings, the asymmetrical fork of MA, symmetrical fork of MP, dissimilar tarsal claws, and forceps sockets fused. Along with the description of the imago, a new diagnosis for the genus Bessierus is presented, also updating the identification key with this new information. A new cladistics analysis is performed to test the stability of the proposed relationships of these four genera within Leptophlebiidae. We obtained a single cladistic hypothesis where the addition of Bessierus adult characters resulted in new synapomorphies for the (Bessierus, Perissophlebiodes) clade, and improved its clade statistical support. The fused forceps sockets resulted in a penisme/topic-synapomorphy/">synapomorphy uniting Bessierus, Perissophlebiodes and Simothraulopsis. As a result of this new analysis, the hypothesis of independent losses of the hind wings in the two dipterous groups studied is supported. The Farrodes lineage is not supported as proposed in previous studies, being restricted only to (Farrodes (Simothraulopsis, Homothraulus)) while the identity of "Perissophlebiodes lineage" is supported. The sister group relationship of Rondophlebia is not clearly defined.

    : Insects were the first animals to take to the skies, and have been flying for over 320 million years. The order Ephemeroptera is, or at least is part of, the most early-diverging lineage of extant winged insects. The extant species present a very short adult life span, mainly dedicated to reproduction and dispersal of eggs. Mating and egg-laying behavior depend on flight. Wings are structures to fly and as such face a number of physical and physiological challenges. The convex curvature along the anterior-posterior axis of the wing generates a camber that must be carefully regulated. One of the most interesting ways of wing bending is provided by the bullae, which have been defined as short sections of flexible chitin, where the flexion lines cross veins. Although the bullae have been frequently used as penisme/topic-taxon/">taxonomic characters, there is no study focused on their morphology, although their prevalence on the wings of mayflies strongly suggests a role in flight. In order to identify evolutionary trends of these structures within Ephemeroptera, we constructed a matrix with comparative anatomy data of the bullae from whole mounts of the wings of 300 specimens belonging to 70 species of several mayfly families, as well as scanning microscopy samples of selected specimens. We also surveyed the number of bullae and their distribution in the wings of the different species within the South American Leptophlebiidae clade. We optimized the characters onto the latest published phylogeny for Leptophlebiidae.

    Gorgona National Natural Park comprises Gorgona and Gorgonilla Islands, located in the Colombian Pacific at 35 km from mainland. A large-scale study was conducted in Gorgona including samples from benthos and aereal nets and traps during five fieldworks. We here focus on the family Leptophlebiidae, describing two new species and giving data of four additional species. Terpides iguapoga sp. n. is described and illustrated from nymphs and adults, and can be characterized by the following characters, in the nymph: fore trochanter and femur with row of strong spine-like setae on inner margin, gills with blackish tracheae, posterolateral projections present on terga VI and VIII–IX; in the adult: upper portion of eyes orangeish white, forewing membrane hyaline tinged with penisme/topic-yellowish/">yellowish around crossveins and marginal intercalary veins, genitalia with penes abruptly narrowing on distal third. Thraulodes insular sp. n. is described from nymphs and adults and diagnosed as follows, in the nymph: abdominal gills with narrow lamellae, femora with black streak near apex; in the imago: forewing costal area basal to bulla without crossveins, a spot and a band on femora, terga II–VI translucent white, terga VII–X darker, posterior margin of subgenital plate triangular, penes spines short and robust. We give new geographic records for four additional species: Farrodes caribbianus , Farrodes roundsi , Hagenulopsis esmeralda and Hagenulopsis zunigae . Ecological data and distributional maps are provided. Leptophlebiidae presents a reduced diversity in relation to mainland; in general the species recorded show a geographic relation to the Chocoan-Caribbean and Andean mayfly faunas.

    As a continuation of a series of papers to improve the knowledge of the Ephemeroptera fauna of the Venezuelan Guayana´s Uplands, an update of the families Leptophlebiidae, Euthyplociidae and Oligoneuriidae in the region is presented. As a result, Paramaka incognita sp. nov. is described, the female of Askola emmerichi is described for the first time, and the genera Askola , Hydrosmilodon and Leentvaaria , the subgenus Miroculis (Atroari) and the species Miroculis (M.) marauiae are recorded for the first time for Venezuela.

    N ABSTRACT. The genus Miroculis Edmunds has species described from Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela and Suriname, with additional records from other countries in northern South America. In this paper, Miroculis (Ommaethus) misionensis sp. nov. is described from male and female imagos from Misiones Province, NE Argentina. This constitutes the Southernmost record for the genus.

    Abstract:

    Mayflies from the family Leptophlebiidae are cosmopolitan and highly diverse morphologically; they are also the largest family in numbers of genera and the second in number of species in the order Ephemeroptera. In spite of their broad diversity and the efforts employed to understand the evolution of this group, the internal classification of Leptophlebiidae remains controversial at all levels. More recently, important changes have been incorporated into the systematics of the family, increasing the number of subfamilies (from two to six) and recognizing several tribes. We present a phylogeny of the family based on 153 taxa (53 genera) and two molecular markers, representing 1655 bp, and verify the penisme/topic-taxon/">taxonomic status of the subfamilies, tribes and complexes. Based on these results, the number of subfamilies has been increased from six to eight and one new tribes and two new subtribes have been added. In addition, new ranks are proposed and the concept of Atalophlebiinae revised, including genera with distributions in the Australasian and Neotropical regions.

    : Two new species of Miroculis Edmunds, 1963 (Ephemeroptera: Leptophlebiidae) are described, diagnosed and illustrated based on adults and/or nymphs collected in Brazil and Colombia. Both species share an uncommon genitalia morphology, which includes a long penis that is curved at base and a long styliger plate. In the case of the species from Brazil, which is also described based on nymphs, gills are devoid of the characteristic lateral lobes found in the other species of the genus.

    In the present paper, based on specimens from different regions of Brazil, we review the current knowledge of the Neotropical genus Simothraulopsis . A phylogenetic study was performed in order to address the relationships between all species and to test the monophyly of Simothraulopsis . For this purpose, 48 characters related to the external morphology of adults and nymphs were investigated. As a result, four new species are described; S. caliginosus sp.nov., S. dominguezi sp. nov., S. eurybasis sp. nov., S. inaequalis sp. nov. New penisme/topic-taxon/">taxonomic and biological information are added to this genus. Nymphs of S. diamantinensis Mariano, 2010 and S. janae Mariano, 2010 are described for the first time and several new distributional records for Brazil are provided. Additionally, keys for male imagos and nymphs of the genus are proposed. The phylogenetic analysis corroborated the monophyly of Simothraulopsis , however, the division in two subgenera as previously proposed was not recovered in our reconstruction.

    The first studies of Leptophlebiidae in the Santa Catarina State, Southern Brazil, dated from 1920. Since then, not much is known about the family (even to the Order Ephemeroptera) to the State. The main goal of this study was to survey fauna of Leptophlebiidae in the Santa Catarina State based on nymphs. The material was obtained from the collection deposited at the Laboratorio de Pesquisa em Ecologia e Quimica of the Universidade Comunitaria da Regiao de Chapeco, besides additional specimens collected between 2008 and 2009. Occurrences were plotted in the hydrograph map of Santa Catarina State, with one map for each genus. The Leptophlebiidae nymphs were recorded in 26 aquatic environments that included small streams and rivers. We identified 24 morphotypes distributed in 12 genera. Number of genera in the Western of Santa Catarina increased from eight to 15. Thraulodes, Ulmeritoides and Homothraulus presented higher frequency of occurrence in the region. Leentvaaria and Hermanella were associated to regions well conserved such as in the Araucaria forest. Needhamella and Segesta were related mainly to Irani River.

    A checklist and new records of Leptophlebiidae (Ephemeroptera) are presented for the Maranhão state, in Brazil’s Northeast Region. Fifteen 15 genera and 20 species of Leptophlebiidae were identified. Farrodes xingu, Hermanellopsis arsia, Hydromastodon sallesi, Miroculis duckensis, Thraulodes marreroi, and Tikuna bilineata are reported for the first time for the Northeast Region, and Miroculitus emersoni is recorded for the first time in Brazil. The number of known species of Leptophlebiidae in Maranhão is increased from three to 21.

    Hermanellopsis Demoulin, 1955 is a genus of Leptophlebiidae known from adults of both sexes and is represented solely by two species, both from South America: Hermanellopsis arsia Savage & Peters, 1983, described only from male subimago; and H. incertans (Spieth, 1943) described from male imago and female subimago. Edmunds et al. (1976) provided the generic description for the supposed nymph of Hermanellopsis. However, Savage & Peters (1983) revised the genus, and study of related genera raised doubt about the identity of the proposed nymph. Thus, the nymph of Hermanellopsis has remained unknown until now.

    : Thraulodes Ulmer, 1920 is one of the most abundant and widespread genera of Leptophlebiidae represented by 66 species (Barber-James et al. 2013; Goncalves et al. 2013; Lima et al. 2013; Souto et al. 2014; Zuniga et al. 2015; Boldrini et al. 2018; Campos Mariano 2019). Its distribution extends from Central Argentina in the Neotropics to the Neartic Region. For Brazil, 23 species are known (Salles Boldrini 2019), but only seven species are known from both adult and nymphal stages: T. bonito Goncalves, Da-Silva Nessimian; T. cochunaensis Dominguez; T. daidaleus Traver Edmunds; T. jones Goncalves, Da-Silva Nessimian; T. itatiajanus Traver Edmunds; T. schlingeri Traver Edmunds and T. traverae Thew (Thew 1960; Traver Edmunds 1967; Dominguez 1987; Lopes et al. 2003; Goncalves et al. 2010; Goncalves et al. 2013).

    A new species of Traverella Edmunds (Ephemeroptera: Leptophlebiidae) is described based on male imagoes from the state of Maranhao, northeastern Brazil. The main characteristics that distinguish the new species from the other species are: 1) subgenital plate forming two lateral, broad projections with two fine, long spines dorsally recurved; 2) penis lobe triangular and apically rounded, with a small ventral projection at apex and a ventral longspine slightly curved and directed to midline.

In the present paper, based on male imagos from the northeastern region of Brazil in the states of Alagoas and Piaui, two new species of the Simothraulopsis are described: Simothraulopsis sinuosus sp. nov. and Simothraulopsis gracilianus sp. nov.
