3S RECIPE – Smart Shrinkage Solutions: Stoke-on-Trent (UK) Policy Brief #1. Resilient urban economy & municipal finance
University of Oxford, 2020Co-Authors: Mykhnenko Vlad, Badyina AnnaAbstract:This policy brief features a successful solution to low economic productivity through the development of a Central Business District (CBD). This was achieved in the 2010s in Stoke-on-Trent – a medium-size polycentric industrial city in central England, coping with economic restructuring and demographic decline. Building on local knowledge and the stakeholders’ experience in implementing this project, this brief demonstrates how to develop a solid evidence base, design and build a CBD that works effectively for the whole city. The key Lesson Learnt is that to build a CBD, one should utilise non-traditional co-production and experimental methods for managing a major project in an uncertain and risky environment, combining technical skills and expertise, whilst tapping into the day-to-day knowledge and experience of the local community. The brief offers a set of policy recommendations on enabling mechanisms for an effective CBD delivery

3S RECIPE – Smart Shrinkage Solutions: Stoke-on-Trent (UK) Policy Brief #2. Compact connected city
University of Oxford, 2020Co-Authors: Mykhenko Vlad, Badyina AnnaAbstract:This policy brief showcases a successful solution to a poor connectivity problem through the construction of an effective transport interchange network in Stoke-on-Trent – a medium-size polycentric industrial city in central England, undergoing fundamental economic restructuring and experiencing an increase in transportation demand. This decade-long project of upgrading two non-primary (non-motorway) roads around the Potteries was completed in 2006. Building on local stakeholders’ knowledge and experience in delivering this solution, this brief shows how a strategic transport interchange can make a shrinking city successful by attractively connecting the areas of work, living, shopping, and leisure. The key Lesson Learnt is that both external and internal connectivity is critical for making a successful city, and that providing more options for sustainable and active local travel supported by a range of facilities (cycle racks, park and rides, dedicated bus lanes) can enhance the city connectivity

Instability of flood embankments due to pore water pressure build-up at the toe : Lesson learned from the Adige river case study
'Canadian Science Publishing', 2020Co-Authors: Amabile Alessia, Pozzato Annarita, Tarantino AlessandroAbstract:The paper presents the case study of the Adige river embankment, a segment of which experienced instability of the landside slope due to the development of uplift pressures. Soil profile and hydro-mechanical properties of the embankment and foundation materials have been assessed via site investigation, laboratory testing, and field monitoring for two cross sections, within and outside the failure segment respectively. The hydro-mechanical model developed thereof was first validated against its ability to reproduce the probability of failure for the two sections with a FOSM-based approach. Comparison of water flow regimes between the two sections was then used to highlight the importance of the hydraulic properties of the material on the landside for the development of uplift pressures at the toe of the embankment. The Lesson Learnt from this case study is that the hydraulic response of the ground on the landside may play a critical role on the stability of flood embankments and its characterisation should therefore not be overlooked when planning site investigation

implementation of koha integrated library management system in wollega university main library nekemte ethiopia a study
SRELS Journal of Information Management, 2020Co-Authors: Niranjana Kantappa, Tolessa Desta, M Paul, Vijaya N KumarAbstract:KOHA is widely used library automation software in the world with provisions for all library operations. This paper examines the implementation of Koha in Wollega University Library the challenges faced in the implementation of Koha and provides solutions to some of the challenges faced. This paper aims to elaborate the method of installation of KohaKoha, steps for data migration from Excel to KOHA and upgrading process of KOHA version from 17.05 to 19.05.05. This is a case study conducted at Wollega University, Nekemte. The paper identifies several issues concerning data migration within a local scenario and elaborates how Koha software installed and customised for university needs. The Lesson Learnt and the experience gained would help in similar exercises elsewhere.

The International Institute for Science Technology and Education (IISTE), 2020Co-Authors: K Niranjana, Desta TolessaAbstract:KOHA is widely used library automation software in the world and it has the provisions for all library operation. This paper appraised the implementation of Koha in Wollega University Library and went further to enumerate and discuss the challenges faced in the implementation of Koha and provided solutions to some of the challenges faced. This paper aims to elaborate the method of installation of koha, steps towards data migration from Excel to KOHA and upgrading process of KOHA version from 17.05 to 19.05.05. This is a descriptive paper of a case study conducted at Wollega University, Nekemte. The paper identifies several issues concerning data migration within a local scenario and elaborates how koha software installed and customised for university needs. The Lesson Learnt and the experience gained would stand to implement a similar kind of system at various places.
