    Abstract:

    Skilled eMigration (or brain drain) from developing to developed countries is becoming the dominant pattern of international Migration today. Such Migration is likely to affect the world distribution of income both directly, through the mobility of people, and indirectly, as the prospect of Migration affects the rate of return to education in both the sending and receiving economies. This Migration pattern will therefore affect human capital accumulation and fertility decisions in both the sending and receiving economies. This paper analyzes these effects in a dynamic two country model of the world economy where agents in both countries make optimal fertility and human capital decisions. The implications of the analysis for the world distribution of income are derived in the light of recent empirical findings of the brain drain literature. The analysis shows that the current trend towards predominantly skilled eMigration from poor to rich countries may in the long run increase inequality in the world distribution of income as relatively poor countries grow large in terms of population. In the short run however, it is possible for world inequality to fall due to rises in GDP per capita in large developing economies with sufficiently low skilled eMigration rates.

    Abstract Kirschner wire is the most used device for clavicular and acromioclavicular joint dislocation fixation. Although wire Migrations have been extensively reported, spinal Migrations remain rare. Moreover, the mechanism of Migration is still elusive. The aim of the present paper is to describe a single case of cervical spine Migration of a K-wire followed by meta-analysis. Twelve cases of spinal K-wire have been reported in the last 20 years, with less than 2 cases per year. Clavicular fixation was the main initial procedure with 66.67% of cases. The average time between surgery and Migration was 25.5 months. C7-T1 and T2-T3 were the prominent level of Migration with each 33.33% of cases, where the Migration was transversal in 72.73% of cases. The neural foramen was the most penetrating site of the K-wire in the spine (75% of cases). In all cases the wire was removed via direct access surgery by gentle pulling out along its axis under view control. The greater range of motion in the shoulder seems to be the main mechanism of all kinds of Migrations.

    The evidence on the impact of return Migration on the sending country is rather sparse, though growing. The contribution of this paper is in addressing various selectivity problems while quantifying the impact of return Migration on wages of returnees using non-experimental data. Using Egyptian household-level survey data, I estimate the wages of return migrants controlling for several selectivity biases arising from eMigration choice, return Migration choice, labor force participation choice, and occupational choice following return. The findings provide strong evidence that overseas temporary Migration results in a wage premium upon return, even after controlling for the various potential selection biases. However, the estimates underscore the significance of controlling for both eMigration and return Migration selections. Ignoring the double selectivity in Migration would overestimate the impact of return Migration on the wage premium of returnees, as migrants are positively selected relative to non-migrants, but returnees are negatively selected among migrants.

    Abstract:

    Server virtualization technologies and their live Migration function contribute to the utilization of the computing resources in cloud datacenters. However, many management operations for virtual machines (VMs) including live Migrations can be evoked by many cloud users at anytime. The outburst of executions of live Migration operations can deteriorate Migration performance and make it difficult to provide required resources to users in a timely manner. Therefore, understanding the behaviors and the performance of simultaneous live Migrations is very important to provide efficient and reliable cloud computing services. In this paper, we construct a performance model of concurrent live Migrations in virtualized datacenters. We first collect performance data from an experimental virtualized system in which we execute simultaneous live Migrations. Based on the data, we next construct a performance model representing the performance characteristics of live Migration using PRISM, a probabilistic model checker. We then demonstrate that we can easily verify the properties described in PRISM language regarding live Migration performance using this model.

    Virtualization has become a key technology for simplifying service management and reducing energy costs in data centers. One of the challenges faced by data centers is to decide when, how, and which virtual machines (VMs) have to be consolidated into a single physical server. Server consolidation involves VM Migration, which has a direct impact on service response time. Most of the existing solutions for server consolidation rely on eager Migrations, which try to minimize the number of physical servers running VMs. These solutions generate unnecessary Migrations due to unpredictable workloads that require VM resizing. This paper proposes an LP formulation and heuristics to control VM Migration, which prioritize virtual machines with steady capacity. We performed experiments using TU-Berlin and Google data center workloads to compare our Migration control strategy against existing eager-Migration-based solutions. We observed that avoiding Migration of VMs with steady capacity reduces the number of Migrations with minimal penalty in the number of physical servers.
