    Background: Cyprinids display the most abundant and widespread species among the European freshwater Teleostei and are known to hybridize quite commonly. Nevertheless, a limited number of markers for conducting comparative differentiation, evolutionary and hybridization dynamics studies are available to date. Findings: Five multiplex PCR sets were optimized in order to assay 41 cyprinid-specific polymorphic microsatellite loci (including 10 novel loci isolated from Chondrostoma nasus nasus, Chondrostoma toxostoma toxostoma and Leuciscus Leuciscus) for 503 individuals (440 purebred specimens and 63 hybrids) from 15 European cyprinid species. The level of genetic diversity was assessed in Alburnus alburnus, Alburnoides bipunctatus, C. genei, C. n. nasus, C. soetta, C. t. toxostoma, L. idus, L. Leuciscus, Pachychilon pictum, Rutilus rutilus, Squalius cephalus and Telestes souffia. The applicability of the markers was also tested on Abramis brama, Blicca bjoerkna and Scardinius erythrophtalmus specimens. Overall, between 24 and 37 of these markers revealed polymorphic for the investigated species and 23 markers amplified for all the 15 European cyprinid species. Conclusions: The developed set of markers demonstrated its performance in discriminating European cyprinid species. Furthermore, it allowed detecting and characterizing hybrid individuals. These microsatellites will therefore be useful to perform comparative evolutionary and population genetics studies dealing with European cyprinids, what is of particular interest in conservation issues and constitutes a tool of choice to conduct hybridization studies.

    Because of interspecific hybridization, there is considerable controversy over the taxonomic status of many members within the family Cyprinidae. In this study, morphological and genetic characters of Leuciscus soufia, a cyprinid fish of southern France and northern Italy, were examined to verify the existence of three subspecies. Leuciscus soufia agassizi differs from Leuciscus soufia multicellus in morphology, in heterozygosity at two diagnostic allozyme loci, and by distinct mitochondrial lineages. Leuciscus s. soufia is morphologically similar to L. s. agassizi but exhibits decreased enzymatic polymorphism. However, two specimens of L. s. soufia from the Var River were found to have mitochondria of the subspecies multicellus, while four Bevera River specimens of L. s. multicellus possessed the mitochondria of the subspecies agassizi. These data argue in favour of introgressive hybridization between L. s. soufia and L. s. multicellus, rejecting the hypothesis that an ancestral population was fragmented...

    Abstract This study focused on the artificial reproduction of common dace Leuciscus Leuciscus (L.) outside the reproductive season. The results indicate there is the possibility of initiating the reproducion in individuals of this before the natural spawning season. There could be induction of spermiation by altering the environmental conditions. For females, hormonal injections were necessary for induction of final oocyte maturation and ovulation. Generally, there were high percentages of spermiation (100%) and ovulation (87%–100%) as well as low mortality (0%–11% and 7%–13% for males and females, respectively) among the induced spawners. The greatest embryo survival occurred when Ovaprim (84.4%) or hCG (89.6%) was administered, although the latency time using hCG was at least twice as long compared to when other spawning agents were used (84–92 hrs and 30–44 hrs). The results from present study could be applicable for optimization of breeding stock numbers in aquaculture enterprises and in providing insights for conservation of L. Leuciscus endangered populations.

    Abstract:

    The present work is the first comprehensive description of easily recognizable morphological changes, allometric growth, and behaviour during early ontogeny of endangered common dace Leuciscus Leuciscus, establishing a reference for its normal development under laboratory conditions. Based on the external morphology, three different periods and eight characteristic steps (ES9–JS1; ES—embryonic steps, JS—juvenile steps) were identified between hatching and 30 days post-hatch at 25°C. This study shows that all allometric changes occurred after notochord flexion across a wide range of body lengths (15.35–21.78 mm TL) reflecting the larvae–juvenile transition. Observations on the early development of common dace confirmed the relatively uniform development of cyprinid species and support the hypothesis of differential growth patterns for primary functions during early ontogeny. Differences in relative growth between common dace and other species might be attributed to their different size at hatching, behaviour, and environmental cues.

    ABSTRACT. The aim of the work was to determine the impact of commercial feed used as an alternative diet for larval fish of the genera Leuciscus on growth and survival during rearing under controlled conditions. Larvae of chub, Leuciscus cephalus (L.), ide, Leuciscus idus (L.), and orfe (its yellow pigmented form), and dace, Leuciscus Leuciscus (L.), were obtained from breeding under controlled conditions and reared for 21 days in a closed recirculating system. The control group was comprised of larvae fed Artemia nauplii. The experimental group was fed Artemia for the first seven days of rearing and then this was partially replaced with formulated feed. The experimental group was fed from day 14 exclusively with formulated feed. The results obtained indicated that the feeding treatment was highly effective. While the body sizes of the larval dace from the control group were similar to those of the experimental group, the larvae of the other species that received the mixed diet attained greater weights (chub, ide) or greater weights and lengths (orfe) by the end of the experiment

    Experiments were conducted to determine full range of tolerated and optimal water condition for eggs incubation of three species from genus Leuciscus i.e: dace Leuciscus Leuciscus (L.), ide Leuciscus idus (L.), and chub Leuciscus cephalus (L.). Spawners were caught from rivers of the northern (Pasleka River drainage) and central (Pilica River drainage) parts of Poland. Fertilized eggs were incubated under controlled conditions at ten different constant temperatures ranging from 4.5 to 29.0 o C. The optimal temperature ranges for the incubation of dace, ide and chub eggs were 7.5 to 12.3oC; 15.7oC and 19.0 to 23.0oC, respectively (considering hatching percentage, incidence of abnormalities and size of hatched larvae), which are close to the water temperature during spawning season. This study also reveals that embryos of studied species can adapt to increasing water temperature due to global warming up to 23.0 o C (dace and ide) and 27.5 o C (chub). Besides, some inter-population differences in the response to temperature were observed.

    Abstract:

    Observations were conducted of the changes in the measurements of selected morphometric characters in embryos and larvae of three closely-related fish species (dace, Leuciscus Leuciscus (L.), ide, Leuciscus idus (L.), European chub, Leuciscus cephalus (L.)). It was confirmed that individual development immediately following hatching is fast with rapid changes in body proportions that stem from the development of particular systems. It was also observed that in dace and ide the values of the biometric characters observed were very similar, as were the trends of these changes. Although chub differed insignificantly from the other two species, statistically significant relative values and the character of growth were noted especially with regard to the lowest height of the tail fold, head depth, body depth, and yolk sac length. Differences in body proportions can be explained by the different maintenance strategies of these species during the earliest stages of ontogenesis.
