However, the spatial distribu- tion of pheromone traps and their density are necessary to optimize the sampling procedure with pheromone traps. Therefore, the objectives of the present study were to determine the pheromone trap density required per hectare to sample coffee leaf miner populations and to determine the spatial distribution of the males of this pest species. The males were sampled every 8 days in 12 consecutive evaluations. Taylor's power law and frequency distributions were used to recognize the distri- bution of the male capture data, which followed a negative binomial distribution. A common K was obtained, allowing the establishment of a single conventional sampling plan for the 12 fields investigated. The adjusted sampling plan requires eight traps in an area of 30 ha for a 25% precision error. Kriging-generated maps allowed the simulation of male captures for 8, 12 and 20 traps per 30 ha and the results were compared with those obtained with absolute sampling resulting in R 2 -values of 0.30, 0.57 and 0.60 respectively. The traps were able to identify the more highly infested areas within the field and are a precise and efficient tool for sampling populations of L. coffeella. J. Appl. Entomol.

Crop Protection, 2008Co-Authors: S T V Magalhaes, R N C Guedes, Eraldo R Lima, Antonio J DemunerAbstract:Abstract Recent reports of coffee genotypes resistant to one of its key pests in the Neotropical region, the leaf miner Leucoptera coffeella (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae), sparked studies trying to recognize the underlying causes of resistance. An association between increased egg laying by the leaf miner and increased caffeine levels in coffee leaves was recently recognized. However, since caffeine is not volatile, its effect on egg laying is likely aided by a volatile compound. This was the hypothesis tested here. Coffee leaf volatiles from 12 coffee genotypes were collected, analyzed (gas chromatograph coupled with a mass spectrometer (CG/MS)) and tested for electrophysiological activity (EAG). The active volatiles thus recognized were subjected to partial correlation against the density of eggs laid by the leaf miner in each coffee genotype. The volatile showing significant positive correlation, p-cymene, was subjected to an attraction test in a four-arm olfactometer confirming its biological activity and providing evidence of its role stimulating egg laying by the coffee leaf miner.

Life-table data were colleted from insecticide-free plots within a 3 ha coffee plantation on the upper, medium and lower canopy. Leafminer mortality was similar among the canopy parts but varied in the two seasons studied. During the rainy season, the generational mortality averaged 94.3%, with 50.2, 33.7 and 10.4% occurring during egg, larval and pupal stages, respectively. During the dry season, total mortality was 89%, with 13.2, 61.0 and 14.8% occurring during egg, larval and pupal stages, respectively. Marginal mortality rates during the rainy season were highest for physiological disturbances, rainfall and egg inviability; but, in the dry season, they were highest for predaceous wasps, physiological disturbances and parasitoids. Egg and larval stages accounted for most of the mortality variation in the rainy season, while the combination of larval and pupal mortality better described the generational mortality in the dry season. Variation in mortality during the rainy season was primarily associated with egg inviability, rainfall and parasitoids. In contrast, predatory wasps and physiological disturbances were the main factors associated with mortality variation during the dry season. These results suggest that weather conditions, natural enemies and plant quality attributes are the main determinants of the population dynamics of L. coffeella.

The intertrap distance can affect the capture due to competition among traps that are placed at short distances. We studied the interference among pheromone traps used to monitor males of the coffee leaf miner, Leucoptera coffeella (Guerin-Meneville) (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae), with traps placed at various distances. Using geostatistical analysis, we determined at what distance captures were independent from other traps. Traps were placed in groups of 12 with distances among traps per group either 2, 5, 10, 15, or 30 m. Traps were checked for males every 4 days during 16 days. We found interference between traps when intertrap distances were shorter than 10 m. The range and magnitude of spatial dependence varied considerably among each sampling date and wind direction. For directions of 45° and 135°, the traps should be placed 110 and 177 m apart, respectively, to obtain spatially independent counts and therefore representative samplings for assessing the insect population in the area. These results have implications for developing sampling plans for managing L. coffeella with pheromone traps; the spatial analysis indicated that a trap density of one pheromone trap for every 3.5-4 ha would be adequate for the monitoring of the coffee leaf miner.

From these perspectives, understanding of pesticide resistance is necessary to devise resistance management strategies to slow its development. Insecticide use and migration of resistant individuals can influence resistance evolution. The selection and dispersion of insecticide resistance were studied on the ten populations of Leucoptera coffeella (Guerin-Meneville) collected from different coffee producing regions of the State of Minas Gerais that were grouped together. Based on canonical variate analysis, a similar resistance pattern was observed in the populations from the "Zona da Mata Mineira" region. The increase of the frequency of resistant individuals was correlated with a larger number of organophosphate applications and likely dispersion of resistant individuals. Considerations on pattern of the resistance in coffee leafminer and implications for management are discussed.

Based on coalescence and multiloci inference this study examines the extent of genetic differentiation of a vulnerable New Caledonia (caledonica) and Australia (Leucoptera) subspecies of Pterodroma Leucoptera (Gould’s Petrel), and whether the genetic relationship between them results from the influence of past events like variation in sea level, or is dominated by contemporary gene flow. Sequences of two mitochondrial genes and five nuclear introns were obtained from 86 individuals from both populations. Haplotype networks were used to infer relationships between the haplotypes of both populations. The demographic history of the P. Leucoptera complex was studied using neutrality tests and Extended Bayesian Skyline Plots. A weak population differentiation was revealed. The Extended Bayesian Skyline plot suggested a population expansion approximately 80,000 years before present (bp) for caledonica and 30,000 years bp for Leucoptera. The split was dated to 30,000 years bp by means of multilocus inference through *BEAST. Despite genetic similarity of the two taxa, we advocate to consider them as independent units for conservation management, given their strong ecological distinctiveness (foraging distribution, winter distribution, breeding phenology and breeding distribution).

Studies of temperate seabirds indicate that both spatial and behavioural segregation can be important mechanisms for reducing competition, but there have been few investigations of resource partitioning by closely related taxa in low productivity, tropical environments. We investigated niche partitioning in 3 gadfly petrel taxa, Pterodroma Leucoptera Leucoptera (n = 22), P. Leucoptera caledonica (n = 7) and P. pycrofti (n = 12), during their non-breeding season in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean by combining tracking data from geolocator-immersion loggers with remotely sensed environmental data in species distribution models (SDMs), and by comparing feather stable isotope ratios. The 3 taxa showed spatial partitioning: two foraged in the North Equatorial Counter Current and one in the South Equatorial Current. This reflected differences in their realised habitat niches, with significant taxon-specific responses to thermocline depth, sea surface temperature and bathymetry. There were also differences among taxa in activity patterns, and all birds spent a much larger proportion of time in flight at night than during the day, suggesting predominance of nocturnal foraging behaviour. Comparison of stable isotope ratios in feathers suggests that P. l. Leucoptera and P. pycrofti mainly consume vertically migrating mesopelagic fishes, whereas the diet of P. l. caledonica also includes some lower trophic levels including crustaceans and squid. Unique insights can be gained from studies of the foraging ecology of tropical pelagic seabirds, in comparison with temperate and polar waters, and are urgently required for understanding and protecting tropical avifauna in key marine habitats.

Revista Colombiana De Entomologia, 2012Co-Authors: Tito Bacca, Rodrigo M Saraiva, Eraldo R LimaAbstract:The use of pheromone traps was tested for monitoring males of the coffee leaf miner, Leucoptera coffeella (Guerin-Meneville) (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae). Insect sampling was carried out in seven coffee plantations under different agronomic conditions in the two regions - Triangulo Mineiro and Zona da Mata, MG, Brazil. The sampling period ranged from 6 to 20 months. The locality significantly affected male capture. Among the weather variables analyzed, the decrease in the average temperature favored higher infestations of L. coffeella in coffee plants and higher male capture. A positive relation between male capture and percent of leaves mined (R2 = 0.79) was observed in the Triangulo Mineiro while in Zona da Mata this relationship was weak, although significant (R2 =0.06). In this last region, a positive and significant correlation between males captured and pest eggs was observed (R2 = 0.34). The results of this study suggest that there is a significant correlation between the male capture by pheromone traps and the population density of L. coffeella, emphasizing the potential of pheromone traps for monitoring the coffee leaf miner.

The major compound, 5,9-dimethylpentadecane (1) was extracted from pheromone glands of virgin females to be used in two experiments. The first one investigated the effect of the pheromone production time by females (extracts of 10 females with age of two days were carried out at 2-hour intervals). The other experiment evaluated the effect of female age on pheromone production (10 females with age ranged from 1 to 5 days after emergence class were used). Hexane extracts were made with 5 ng µL-1 of 5,9-dimethylheptadecane (2) as internal standard and analyzed by GC. Females had the highest amount of pheromone at the last four hours in the dark and the two first hours in the light period. One-day old females produced the highest amount of pheromone in the glands.

These results have implications for developing sampling plans for managing L. coffeella with pheromone traps; the spatial analysis indicated that a trap density of one pheromone trap for every 3.5-4 ha would be adequate for the monitoring of the coffee leaf miner.

Biological Conservation, 2006Co-Authors: David Priddel, Nicholas Carlile, Robert WheelerAbstract:Abstract Gould’s petrel ( Pterodroma Leucoptera Leucoptera ) was restricted, essentially, to a single breeding locality – Cabbage Tree Island, Australia. As a safeguard against extinction, an additional breeding colony was established on nearby Boondelbah Island, where artificial nesting habitat was created by installing 100 plastic nest boxes. Over two years, a total of 200 nestling Gould’s petrels were translocated from Cabbage Tree Island to these boxes. Colonies on both islands were then monitored for a further four years. Selection of nestlings for transfer was based on prior knowledge of growth, plumage development and emergence from the burrow, and aimed to select only birds that were 11–28 days from fledging (DBF) in 1999 and 11–22 DBF in 2000. Of the first 100 nestlings translocated to Boondelbah Island (in March 1999), 95 fledged successfully 8–27 days after transfer (mean = 17.3 days). Of the second 100 nestlings translocated (in March 2000) all successfully fledged 9–22 days after transfer (mean = 15.1 days). The removal of young had no discernible effect on the subsequent breeding productivity of the donor pairs. In all, 41 Gould’s petrels have been recorded at the new colony on Boondelbah Island, where at least 27 nest boxes have been visited. Ten translocated fledglings (nine male, one female) have returned to the translocation site, taking up nest boxes that were, on average, 5.5 m from the box from which they fledged. An additional 27 non-translocated birds, of unknown origin, have also nested in nest boxes on Boondelbah, along with four birds previously known from Cabbage Tree Island. Two nestlings transferred to Boondelbah Island have returned to Cabbage Tree Island. Within five years of the first translocation, the newly established colony on Boondelbah Island has produced a total of 24 eggs and 14 fledglings. The translocation technique developed for Gould’s petrel has broad applicability, being readily adaptable for other burrow-nesting seabirds.

Biological Conservation, 2000Co-Authors: David Priddel, Nicholas Carlile, Robert WheelerAbstract:Abstract The endangered Gould's petrel ( Pterodroma Leucoptera Leucoptera ) nests, almost exclusively, in rainforest on Cabbage Tree Island, New South Wales, Australia. Since their introduction in 1906, European rabbits ( Oryctolagus cuniculus ) have greatly changed the structure of the rainforest, threatening its existence and that of the petrel. Rabbits were eradicated by sequential epizootics of myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD), and a single application of cereal-based bait (Talon® 20P) containing the anticoagulant brodifacoum. The effectiveness of these mortality agents was evaluated by monitoring 70 telemetered rabbits, half of which were vaccinated against RHD. A natural epizootic of myxomatosis from May to July 1997 reduced the rabbit population from about 250 to 100. RHD, released in August 1997, reduced the population by a further 55%, the rabbits dying within 4–23 days. No survivors tested positive to RHD antibodies. Aerial baiting in September 1997 eradicated all remaining rabbits within 13 days. Intensive monitoring over the next 6 months detected no survivors. Non-target deaths included two buff-banded rails ( Gallirallus philippensis ) and one pied currawong ( Strepera graculina ).
