    Abstract:

    This essay examines two novels by Dominican American author Julia Alvarez, How the García Girls Lost Their Accents and In the Time of the Butterflies. By undertaking a transnational Feminist reading practice, the author explicates the novels’ critique of the political constructions of the Latin American Third World as “deprived” and “depraved.” Alvarez’s work traces how these representations have been constitutive of a North American Liberal Feminist imaginary, limiting its conception of the forms of Feminist agency available to women in the Americas as well as the Liberal social rebellion and “development” of the woman of color in the United States. Ultimately, the two novels uncover the imperial history between the United States and the Dominican Republic that (neo)Liberal linkages otherwise obscure.

    Abstract:

    Perceived sexism has been linked to poorer sexual health among women. However, research has yet to examine whether protective factors, specifically Liberal Feminist beliefs (i.e., support for women’s empowerment and equity), moderate the relation between perceived sexism and precursors to risky sexual behavior. The present studies tested this possibility. In Study 1, 161 female undergraduates reported their Liberal Feminist beliefs, perceived sexism, and sexual self-efficacy. For women with weaker Feminist beliefs, perceived sexism was related to lower sexual self-efficacy. For women with stronger Feminist beliefs, perceived sexism was uncorrelated with sexual self-efficacy. In Study 2, 85 women with weaker or stronger Liberal Feminist beliefs were exposed to either hostile or benevolent sexism and subsequently reported their expectations to initiate condom use during sex. Participants with strong Feminist beliefs reported greater anticipated condom use than those with weak Feminist beliefs, but only in the hostile sexism condition; in the benevolent sexism condition, women with strong Feminist beliefs reported condom use intentions that were similar to those reported by women with weak Feminist beliefs. Results suggest women’s attitudes and social environment work together to shape sexual well-being and that Liberal Feminist beliefs may be a powerful tool women can employ to combat hostile, but not benevolent, sexism.

    Abstract:

    Transhumanism is a sociopolitical movement that seeks to transform human beings into beings beyond the human condition through various technological means. Within this broader movement stand the democratic transhumanists, or technoprogressives, who believe that a social safety net and broad access to transhuman and related medical technologies are critical to both justice and the success of the transhumanist project. Feminists engaged in technological and political analysis often have much in common with technoprogressivism, but there are also significant points of disagreement. A Liberal Feminist ethical analysis of democratic transhumanism will highlight areas of both agreement and disagreement and will provide a potential roadmap for how to ethically engage the future of transhuman technologies.
