Nurse‐Led Interventions for Hypertension: A Scoping Review With Implications for Evidence‐Based Practice

Opollo, Jennifer GrayAbstract:BACKGROUND Hypertension is the leading preventable contributor to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, affecting 1 billion people globally. Low- and middle-income countries have increasing rates of hypertension, much of it undiagnosed. AIMS The purpose of the project is to review studies of nurse-led hypertension interventions that have been implemented in East Africa and to inform hypertension interventions in low-resource settings. METHODS A scoping review was conducted following Arksey and O'Malley's (2005) format. An electronic search in six databases for citations was conducted by the medical Librarian Author. The parameters for this scoping review were nurse interventions related to hypertension in East Africa. RESULTS Fourteen full-text articles were identified that met inclusion criteria. Nurse-led interventions for hypertension were found to increase access to care and be cost- effective. Medication Adherence Clubs were an innovative intervention that increased the retention of patients in care. LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION This scoping review provides evidence from studies of nurse-led hypertension interventions in East Africa relevant to implementing or improving hypertension screening, diagnosis, and treatment. Nurses provide 80% of health care in East Africa, and nurse-led hypertension interventions are critically needed to ameliorate the significant hypertension-related increases in morbidity and mortality globally.

Librarians as Authors in Higher Education and Teaching and Learning Journals in the Twenty-First Century: An Exploratory Study

FolkAbstract:Abstract The future of academic libraries largely depends on our ability to be innovative, anticipate our users' needs, adapt to a changing landscape, and prove our value through evidence. However, if our higher education colleagues do not perceive the profession as being relevant, our ability to innovate, anticipate, and adapt will be moot. This study investigates the visibility of Librarians as Authors in scholarly higher education (HE) and teaching and learning (TL) journals between 2000 and 2012. Findings include that 1.38% of articles published in these journals were written by a Librarian Author or Authors, most of who are employed at research institutions. Information literacy was the most common topic, and theoretical articles were the most popular article type.

It is the most comprehensive study on the life and work of Pura Belpre, Librarian, Author, translator, storyteller, puppeteer and advocate for migrant children. It gifts us more than 40 stories and essays, many of which had never been published before. Lisa Sanchez Gonzalez approaches this legendary Librarian from a literary viewpoint and through a cultural perspective.The book cover, which is in itself a statement, will move those of us who have embraced the noble profession of Librarian, and who recognize the importance of children's literature and storytelling. As if that wasn't enough, the Author highlights Pura Belpre's unique contribution to American literature and library science. It is impossible to read this work without recognizing Belpre's passion for reading to children and appraising her value for all things folkloric. Lisa Sanchez-Gonzalez, who has a doctorate in Comparative Literature from UCLA, fully demonstrates her mastery of the subject and her research skills with this book. She can also boast of her skills in diasporic research and in writing to transmit knowledge. She is both profound and straightforward. The read is pleasant and interesting at a level that serves experts and laypeople alike.The work begins with a masterful presentation of the life, intellectual contribution and legacy of this valuable woman who was part of the Puerto Rican diaspora and who started her career by offering library services to children at the height of the Harlem Renaissance, making her the first Latina Librarian to work in the New York Public Library.
