    Abstract:

    ABSTRACT Cloud computing and Web collaboration are shaping 21st-century libraries. These 2 developments seem to be behind the newest developments in Library services and are driving Library automation. The 2 are impacting Library work by providing the Library Administrator with opportunities, especially for greater synergies among various individuals over dispersed locations. While the literature indicates ambivalence about these twin developments among Library and information professionals, the Administrators of distance Library services have no choice but to engage in the use of cloud computing technologies and Web collaboration in order to remain relevant to users. Unfortunately, in doing this, distance services librarians will need to trade off ownership and control, trusting outsiders, while teaching users to be critical of the information gathered from collaborative sources.

    ABSTRACT How does a new dean or director identify whom among a Library's faculty and professionals are active in university and community endeavors, committees, governing boards, and university governance? Once identified, how does the new dean or director develop and leverage these valuable assets to assist in building support for the Library among campus constituencies? Working with the chief Library Administrator, Library staff cultivate productive relationships with the campus community and key stakeholders to the benefit of the Library and ultimately the larger organization. Cultivated staff members assist the dean or director in building a culture of assisting campus decision makers with authoritative resources, making it easier for decision makers to effectively perform their duties while simultaneously raising the profile of the Library and Library services.

    ABSTRACTMany libraries in the US and abroad have formed Sister Library partnerships with libraries in other regions of the world. Some have been very successful and are still ongoing; others have run their course once initial needs were met or the primary leaders retired or moved to other libraries. Few articles published on these partnerships discuss the successes and pitfalls from the perspective of the Library Administrator. In this article, the authors describe best practices from the point of Library administration and how to develop a relationship that is long-lasting and successful.

    Abstract:

    Rapid transition of the Federal Depository Library Program to a mostly electronic environment and U. S. Government Printing Office standards for computer hardware and public services in depositories have raised the specter of mass exodus of libraries from the program. This study examines libraries' commitment to the program and how they are coping with changing information formats and public service demands, from the perspective of senior Administrators responsible for allocating resources and setting service priorities. The author visited 24 depositories in three geographic regions and interviewed Library directors and documents librarians. Administrators' statements give evidence of great willingness to continue as depositories and the belief that costs must be borne for access to electronic information generally, not just government sources. There are serious doubts, however, about the program's future as universal Internet access diminishes the special advantages of depository status. Directors express firm conviction that there will continue to be an important role for government information specialists in libraries.

    Abstract:

    Within the literature exploring the role of research in academic librarianship, very little attention has been paid to the perspectives of upper Library Administrators. This perspective is critical because Library Administrators play a key role in hiring, evaluating, supporting, promoting, and tenuring professional librarians. As a way of bringing the administrative perspective to these discussions, our study examines how Library Administrators within the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) view the role of research in their own libraries and within academic librarianship, as well as how they perceive the current and future climate for librarians’ research. Our study reveals key areas in need of further research and identifies several issues that librarians and upper Administrators would benefit from exploring together to advance discussions about research.
