  • A Biblioteca Universitária na Sociedade do Conhecimento : estudo de caso da Biblioteca Universitária Professor Victor de Sá, da Universidade Lusófona (Relatório de Estágio)
    2014
Co-Authors: Garcia, Carla Sofia Marques De Sousa
    Abstract:

In the knowledge society in which we live, the volume of information increases at an exponential rate and proliferates in different supports and types, pilling up scientific and reliable information with articles of opinion and less correct data. Given this scenario of informative chaos, it is up to the University, in particular, to prepare its students to respond to the new demands, whereas the University Library due to its nature and mission, constitutes itself as a privileged information source, equipped with a whole series of reliable and relevant resources at the service of its users and at the distance of a click. This report pretends to be a study case and aims to describe the activities related to the curricular internship attended at Professor Victor de Sá University Library (BVS), which provides its users a variety of digital resources, including internationally certified databases of recognized importance, and which constitute a surplus value in the research work of students and of the teaching staff of the University. However, is possible to observe, that the use rate of digital resources, despite its quality is lower than expected by the Library Technicians. The present study aims to assess the causes of these low levels of use in order to enable the correction of this situation and to allow the BVS an effective return on investment by meeting the needs of its users. With this purpose, a questionnaire was drawn up and applied and although college students are increasingly becoming technologically more competent, the results reveal difficulties at the level of location, of assessment and of the use of information. The survey and data analysis on the practices of use of digital resources made available by the BVS, pretends to provide support to the establishment of an appropriate program of action adjusted to the identified needs, and includes some suggestions in order to correct the status quo

  • training in the Library and information services sector
    2015
    Co-Authors: Dianne Walton-sonda
    Abstract:

Vocational education and training for the Library and information services (LIS) sector in Australia offers students the career pathway to become Library Technicians. Library Technicians play a valuable role in drawing on sound practical knowledge and skills to support the delivery of Library and information services that meet client needs. Over the past forty years, the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) has monitored the quality of Library technician courses. Since 2005, ALIA has run national professional development days for Library technician educators with the goal of establishing an alternative model for course recognition focusing on the process of peer review to benchmark good practice and stimulate continuous improvement in Library technician education. This initial developmental work has culminated in 2009 with site visits to all Library technician courses in Australia. The paper presents a whole-of-industry case study to critically review the work undertaken to dat

  • Changing Roles of Librarians and Library Technicians
    The Partnership, 2015
Co-Authors: Norene James, Lisa Shamchuk, Katherine Koch
    Abstract:

What significant changes are librarians and Library Technicians experiencing in their roles? A survey put forward across Canada to librarians and Library Technicians addressing this question was conducted in February 2014. Eight hundred eighty-two responses were obtained from librarians, defined as MLIS graduates, and Library Technicians, defined as graduates from a two-year Library diploma program. Respondents needed to have been employed in the last two years in these roles and students of either an MLIS or LIT program were also welcome to participate. The results suggest that both librarians and Library Technicians perceive their roles as growing in scope and complexity and that the lines of responsibility are blurring. A majority of respondents indicated that they perceive a change in their roles in the past five years and commented on what the perceived changes were. Librarian and Library technician roles may be shifting away from what may be viewed as traditional or clearly defined responsibilities and both librarians and Library Technicians may be taking on new tasks as well as experiencing task overlap. All Library staff will need to be fluid, adaptable, and open to change. Library school curricula and workplace training need to incorporate the development of these competencies.

  • alia course accreditation and the Library technician workforce meeting in the middle
National Vocational Education and Training Research Conference, 2010
    Co-Authors: Dianne Waltonsonda
    Abstract:

Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) works with Library and information services (LIS) education providers and consults with other stakeholders, including students and employers, to ensure LIS courses equip graduates with the ALIA core knowledge, skills and attributes to work effectively in the industry. ALIA accredits courses at both the professional (librarian) and paraprofessional (Library technician) levels. This paper will report on how ALIA monitors the quality and relevance of courses delivered in the vocational education and training (VET) sector in order to ensure that Library Technicians (LTs) meet the standards required for current and emerging Library and information practice. There is a particular focus on the issues of course accreditation, where the Association’s role is complicated by the need to work alongside the national quality assurance processes that have been established by the relevant technical education authorities (Hallam and Genoni:2009:233). This paper examines how LT educators, ALIA standards and national training packages attempt to work on this issue acting as one voice that represents the standards required of LTs in the workforce.
