We specifically look at software vendors that use the cloud to provide their solutions to customers. They might face the challenges to migrate an in-house developed and provided product onto a cloud IaaS or PaaS platform, while also mapping a Licensing Model onto a cloud monetisation Model. We provide here an experience report. This is based on experience with five migration case studies. We discuss the migration process under consideration of cost aspects, covering both income and expenses in the cloud in relation to the cloud delivery Model chosen. We focus on one of the case studies to illustrate the concepts and observations.

Hackers have made successful attempts in thwarting the software license key checking and hence cracked copies of the original versions are released. They not only cause losses for the companies but also render the hard work and dedication of the software development team useless. To counter such hacks, companies have resorted to various checks and countermeasures but all have been beaten in one way or another. In this paper, a software Licensing Model which generates a key from SRAM PUF source is proposed.

Sharing Source Code with Clients: A Hybrid Business and Development Model
IEEE Software, 2011Co-Authors: Mikko RiepulaAbstract:Open innovation and the recent emphasis on client involvement imply the emergence of hybrid software Licensing Models combining the limited openness of source code with traditional value appropriation logic. A practical hybrid Licensing Model responds to the needs of both business-to-business software vendors in vertical domains and consultancies that must maintain separate quasi-products. The central idea is that the vendor of commoditized products also licenses source code to select clients, who become participants in and subscribers to an ongoing closed development community. The tools and techniques are readily available from open source development, but the motivations and relationship management work differently than in a pure open source context.

The further amalgamation of traditional proprietary software Licensing with open source Licensing can be rationalised through commodification of software, shift from products to services, the viability of the pure-form open source Model, and the continuing need for better operational efficiency. After reviewing other hybrid-OSS Models, a very practical hybrid Licensing Model is presented that responds to the need of software vendors in various vertical domains. Its benefits and limitations are discussed, and it is positioned relative to the value co-production (co-creation) literature. A set of research questions are raised to the information systems research agenda.

As a part of the Licensing policy, some protection mechanisms, whether hardware, legal or code-based, are invariably built into the license. The application of such mechanisms has primarily been in the realm of off-the-shelf, packaged, consumer software. However, as component-based software gradually becomes mainstream in software development, new component-oriented Licensing systems are required. We propose an enterprise component Licensing Model for the management of software component licenses. The Model provides a comprehensive license management framework allowing for extensibility and flexibility. Furthermore, we identify differences between standalone software and component software, describe a high level Model for policy-driven component Licensing, and discuss both the benefits and drawbacks of the enterprise component Licensing Model for the management of software component licenses.
