Age and work-related motives: Results of a meta-analysis: AGE AND WORK-RELATED MOTIVES
Journal of Organizational Behavior, 2011Co-Authors: Dorien T.a.m. Kooij, Annet H. De Lange, Ruth Kanfer, Paul Jansen, Josje S.e. DikkersAbstract:Summary An updated literature review was conducted and a meta-analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between age and work-related motives. Building on theorizing in Life Span Psychology, we hypothesized the existence of age-related differences in work-related motives. Specifically,we proposedan age-related increase in thestrengthof securityandsocial motives, and an age-related decrease in the strength of growth motives. To investigate Life Span developmental theory predictions about age-related differences in control strategies, we also examinedthe relationship between age and intrinsic and extrinsic motives.Consistent with our predictions, meta-analytic results showed a significant positive relationship between age and intrinsic motives, and a significant negative relationship between age and strength of growth and extrinsic motives. The predicted positive relation between age and strength of social and security motives was only found among certain subgroups. Implications of these findings for work motivation and Life Span theories and future research are discussed. Copyright # 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The relations between work centrality, psychological contracts, and job attitudes: The influence of age
European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology, 2011Co-Authors: Dorien T.a.m. KooijAbstract:The current study sought to explain a largely overlooked theme in psychological contract literature, that is, how individual factors are related to formation of psychological contract. It investigated the relationship between work centrality, psychological contracts, and job attitudes. It was expected that people with higher work centrality would be less likely to have a transactional contract and more likely to have a relational contract. Furthermore, it was expected that psychological contract mediates the relations between work centrality and job attitudes. Finally, we expected age to moderate the relations between work centrality and the psychological contract, with stronger relations for older workers than for younger workers. Based on Life Span Psychology, it was argued that work centrality becomes an important factor for older workers in deciding whether or not to invest in the relationship with the organization. The study was conducted among 465 employees in a Dutch health care organization. Struc...

it takes two to tango the un easy dance between Life course sociology and Life Span Psychology
Advances in Life Course Research, 2009Co-Authors: Richard A SetterstenAbstract:Abstract This article reflects on the challenges and contradictions of studying adult lives in contemporary times. It highlights complexities related to age, variability, social change, risk and uncertainty, institutional contexts, politics, and interdependence. It discusses how Life-course sociology and Life-Span Psychology might together better inform these and other themes. It also identifies key points of divergence and convergence between the two fields, what these might mean for their future separation, cooperation, or integration, and how the barriers between them might be overcome.

The role of time perspective in relations between achievement goals, work engagement and performance of post-retired workers
International Journal of Psychology, 2008Co-Authors: Annet H. De Lange, Nico W. Van Yperen, Beatrice Van Der HeijdenAbstract:In this study, we test a theoretical model that applies insights of socio-emotional selectivity theory 562 Thursday 24th July 2008 (Carstensen, 1995) and the achievement goal approach (Dweck, 1986) to work motivation and behavior of older workers. As known from Life-Span Psychology, both the tendency toward affiliation and avoidance goals increase with age. We expect older workers to have a tendency to adopt mastery-avoidance instead of mastery-approach goals, and will present data from N = 172 post-retired workers (aged 61 to 79) who voluntarily continue to work to illustrate relations between time perspective, work goals, and outcomes such as work engagement and job performance.
