In this paper, a systematic approach to process tailoring using a unified Lifecycle Template is presented. Additionally, a prototype tool, Cyber Eagle Suite, is implemented to support the process tailoring approach based on the proposed unified Lifecycle Template. We believe that the proposed approach is helpful in process tailoring. In an organization, multiple standard processes may be needed to address the needs of different application domains, Lifecycle models, methodologies, and tools (1). The organi- zation's set of standard processes contains process elements (e.g., a work product size-estimating element) that may be interconnected according to one or more Lifecycle models that describe the relationships among these process elements. Since one Lifecycle model may not be appropriate for all situations, the organization may adopt different Lifecycle models as needed. Process tailoring is making, altering, or adapting a process description for a particular end (1). For example, a project tailors its defined process from the organization's set of standard processes to meet the objectives, constraints, and environment of the project. That is, tailoring is the act of adapting a standard software process to meet the needs of a specific project (2). Nowadays, process tailoring is regarded as a mandatory task implemented during the process plan phase, especially the organization want to comply with international standards such as ISO or CMMI. However this important activity is usually carried out following ad-hoc approach with neither guideline nor systematic method. Furthermore, to date only little research was done in this area (3)-(7). In this paper we present a new approach by defining software Lifecycle Templates according to a unified Lifecycle Template, which can be used as the process tailoring basis for specific projects in an organization as well as in different organizations. Based on Lifecycle models existing (but not limited to these, a new Lifecycle Template can be introduced according to a new model), multiple Lifecycle Templates could be customized from one unified Lifecycle Template. The unified Lifecycle Template is represented as domain model. In such domain model, two main parts, Lifecycle part and project part are introduced separately. We will go into detail of the two main parts together with the relationship between them in the paper. As a support, we also present a tool prototype called Cyber Eagle Suite to implement the Lifecycle Template definition and process tailoring based on our method. II. THE PROPOSED UNIFIED Lifecycle Template The proposed unified Lifecycle Template is a well-organized process Template that combining the elements in a software process strongly based on the software development Lifecycle, including roles, activities, artifacts, standards, guidelines, doc- ument Templates, checklists, tools, instantiations and historical cases etc. It is also a model Template from which multiple Lifecycle Templates are derived according to different Lifecycle models, to meet software development needs of different projects and process tailoring at different levels. The proposed unified Lifecycle Template is represented as domain model in Figure 1. Before we can render how Lifecycle Templates are defined and serve process tailoring, we need to dive into the domain model first, to explore what exactly constitutes the process model and how they make it.
