photocatalytic overall water splitting on the perovskite type transition metal oxynitride catao2n under visible Light Irradiation
Chemical Communications, 2015Co-Authors: Tsuyoshi Takata, Kazunari Domen, Jiasheng XuAbstract:Overall water splitting was achieved on a simple perovskite oxynitride photocatalyst, CaTaO2N, with an absorption edge at 510 nm. This photocatalyst, modified with a Rh–Cr bimetallic oxide cocatalyst, produced stoichiometric H2 and O2 steadily under UV and visible Light Irradiation after coating of the photocatalyst particles with amorphous Ti oxyhydroxide.

photoreactions on latio2n under visible Light Irradiation
Journal of Physical Chemistry A, 2002Co-Authors: Asako Kasahara, Kota Nukumizu, Go Hitoki, Tsuyoshi Takata, Junko N Kondo, Michikazu Hara, Hisayoshi Kobayashi, Kazunari DomenAbstract:Photochemical reactions on LaTiO2N, a perovskite-type oxynitride, were examined. Under visible-Light Irradiation (420 nm < λ < 600 nm), LaTiO2N reduced H+ into H2 and oxidized H2O into O2 in the presence of a sacrificial electron donor (methanol) or acceptor (Ag+) by the band gap transition (2.1 eV). Oxidation of water proceeded with little degradation of the oxynitride, whereas partial substitution of Ca2+ for La3+ of LaTiO2N and modification by IrO2 colloid markedly suppressed degradation of the oxynitride and increased O2 evolution efficiency.

rh doped srtio3 photocatalyst electrode showing cathodic photocurrent for water splitting under visible Light Irradiation
Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2011Co-Authors: Katsuya Iwashina, Akihiko KudoAbstract:A Rh-doped SrTiO3 (SrTiO3:Rh) photocatalyst electrode that was readily prepared by pasting SrTiO3:Rh powder onto a transparent indium tin oxide electrode gave a cathodic photocurrent under visible-Light Irradiation (λ > 420 nm), indicating that the SrTiO3:Rh photocatalyst electrode possessed p-type semiconductor character. The cathodic photocurrent increased with an increase in the amount of doped Rh up to 7 atom %. The incident-photon-to-current efficiency at 420 nm was 0.18% under an applied potential of −0.7 V vs Ag/AgCl for the SrTiO3:Rh(7 atom %) photocatalyst electrode. The photocurrent was confirmed to be due to water splitting by analyzing the evolved H2 and O2. The water splitting proceeded with the application of an external bias smaller than 1.23 V versus a Pt counter electrode under visible-Light Irradiation and also using a solar simulator, suggesting that solar energy conversion should be possible with the present photoelectrochemical water splitting.

photocatalytic activities of noble metal ion doped srtio3 under visible Light Irradiation
ChemInform, 2004Co-Authors: Ryoko Konta, Hideki Kato, Tatsuya Ishii, Akihiko KudoAbstract:Mn-, Ru-, Rh-, and Ir-doped SrTiO3 possessed intense absorption bands in the visible Light region due to excitation from the discontinuous levels formed by the dopants to the conduction band of the SrTiO3 host. Mn- and Ru-doped SrTiO3 showed photocatalytic activities for O2 evolution from an aqueous silver nitrate solution while Ru-, Rh-, and Ir-doped SrTiO3 loaded with Pt cocatalysts produced H2 from an aqueous methanol solution under visible Light Irradiation (λ > 440 nm). The Rh(1%)-doped SrTiO3 photocatalyst loaded with a Pt cocatalyst (0.1 wt %) gave 5.2% of the quantum yield at 420 nm for the H2 evolution reaction.

highly stable water splitting on oxynitride taon photoanode system under visible Light Irradiation
Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2012Co-Authors: Masanobu Higashi, Ryu Abe, Kazunari DomeAbstract:Highly stable photoelectrochemical water splitting is demonstrated for the first time on a tantalum oxynitride (TaON) photoanode under visible Light Irradiation. Highly dispersed CoOx nanoparticles on the TaON photoanode efficiently scavenge photogenerated holes and effectively suppress self-oxidative deactivation of the TaON surface, resulting in a stable photocurrent. The use of highly dispersed CoOx cocatalyst on TaON together with phosphate solutions significantly increased the photocurrent due to the formation of a cobalt/phosphate phase. This enabled us to stably split water into H2 and O2 under visible Light Irradiation at a relatively low applied bias (0.6 V vs Pt counter electrode).

efficient hydrogen evolution from aqueous mixture of i and acetonitrile using a merocyanine dye sensitized pt tio2 photocatalyst under visible Light Irradiation
Chemical Physics Letters, 2002Co-Authors: Ryu Abe, Kazuhiro Sayama, Hironori ArakawaAbstract:Abstract Hydrogen production from aqueous mixture of I − and acetonitrile using dye-sensitized Pt/TiO 2 photocatalyst was investigated under visible Light Irradiation. It was found that energetically uphill H 2 formation with a high quantum efficiency (∼2%) took place using a merocyanine dye-sensitized Pt/TiO 2 photocatalyst and an I − electron donor in an acetonitrile–water mixture (AN:H 2 O=95:5 by volume) under visible Light Irradiation ( λ>440 nm ). Addition of acetonitrile, which is a good solvent for I − and merocyanine dye, significantly improved H 2 evolution.
