To test the objective that a Linseed Meal (LSM) supplement in beef cows during late gestation and early lactation would impact offspring growth performance, steer carcass composition, and attainment of puberty in heifer calves, multiparous beef cows received either LSM or a control supplement for the last 60 d of gestation (exp. 1; n=72) or during the first 60 d of lactation (exp. 2; n=91). In both experiments, birth weight, weaning weight, and ADG of calves were not affected (P>0.31) by LSM supplementation. There was no effect (P>0.09) of supplementation on carcass characteristics of steer progeny fed to market weight. Main effects were length of LSM feeding (0, 1, 7, or 14 d) and length of exposure to estradiol-17β (E 2 ) implant (0, 6, or 24h prior to tissue collection). Implanting ewes with E 2 for 24h increased liver mass relative to empty body weight (EBW; g/kg EBW) compared with ewes implanted for 0 or 6h ( P ≤0.03), whereas feeding LSM for 14 d decreased liver mass compared with ewes fed LSM for 1 or 7 d ( P ≤0.02). There was an LSM×E 2 interaction ( P =0.01) for duodenal mass (g/kg EBW), LSM, and E 2 tended ( P =0.07) to influence the stomach complex mass; however, ileal mass was not affected. Neither LSM nor E 2 affected ( P ≥0.12) CYP2C or CYP3A mRNA expression or cellularity of the liver. Exogenous E 2 influenced circulating concentrations of IGF-I, T 3 , and T 4 . The estrogenic or anti-estrogenic potential of LSM is dependent upon the tissue, exposure to E 2 , and the duration of LSM feeding. Feeding LSM during gestation, lactation, or during the grow-finish phase warrants further investigation.

Angiogenic factors and receptors measured included vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), VEGF receptor-1 (FLT), VEGF receptor-2 (KDR), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), FGF receptor 2 IIIc (FGFR), angiopoietin (ANG)-1, ANG-2, ANG receptor (Tie-2), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), and soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC). There was a LSM x E(2) interaction (P = 0.003) on the jejunal cellular proliferation index. Jejunal cellular proliferation increased (P 0.75) or vascular surface area (P > 0.29) of the jejunal villi. Expression of mRNA for the angiogenic factors VEGF, FGF, FGFR, ANG-1, ANG-2, and Tie-2 were not altered (P > 0.33) by feeding LSM or implanting ewes with E(2). Implanting ewes with E(2) for 6 h increased (P = 0.04) eNOS expression compared with ewes implanted for 0 h. Feeding LSM and implanting ewes with E(2) interacted to alter mRNA expression of FLT (P = 0.04), KDR (P 0.11). The impacts of E(2) and LSM on nutrient uptake and growth during physiologically important time points are unknown.

Cell proliferation within the uterine luminal epithelium was greatest (P<0.01) with 24 h of E2 exposure compared with 0 h and 6 h. When expressed as the percentage change in uterine cell proliferation, feeding LSM for 14 d negated these effects. Only length of E2 exposure impacted vascularity with capillary number density at 6 h of E2 exposure being greater (P=0.02) than at 24 h. While mRNA expression of several angiogenic factors was influenced by E2, there was a LSM×E2 interaction (P≤0.03) only on vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 and fibroblast growth factor receptor 2C. It appears that growth and angiogenesis of E2 sensitive tissues may be influenced by the duration of LSM feeding.

Main effects were length of LSM feeding (0, 1, 7, or 14 d) and length of exposure to estradiol-17β (E 2 ) implant (0, 6, or 24h prior to tissue collection). Implanting ewes with E 2 for 24h increased liver mass relative to empty body weight (EBW; g/kg EBW) compared with ewes implanted for 0 or 6h ( P ≤0.03), whereas feeding LSM for 14 d decreased liver mass compared with ewes fed LSM for 1 or 7 d ( P ≤0.02). There was an LSM×E 2 interaction ( P =0.01) for duodenal mass (g/kg EBW), LSM, and E 2 tended ( P =0.07) to influence the stomach complex mass; however, ileal mass was not affected. Neither LSM nor E 2 affected ( P ≥0.12) CYP2C or CYP3A mRNA expression or cellularity of the liver. Exogenous E 2 influenced circulating concentrations of IGF-I, T 3 , and T 4 . The estrogenic or anti-estrogenic potential of LSM is dependent upon the tissue, exposure to E 2 , and the duration of LSM feeding. Feeding LSM during gestation, lactation, or during the grow-finish phase warrants further investigation.

Angiogenic factors and receptors measured included vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), VEGF receptor-1 (FLT), VEGF receptor-2 (KDR), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), FGF receptor 2 IIIc (FGFR), angiopoietin (ANG)-1, ANG-2, ANG receptor (Tie-2), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), and soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC). There was a LSM x E(2) interaction (P = 0.003) on the jejunal cellular proliferation index. Jejunal cellular proliferation increased (P 0.75) or vascular surface area (P > 0.29) of the jejunal villi. After demucilagen increased crude protein content and reduced soluble fiber of Linseed Meal. During seven weeks, 240 jundiá juveniles were reared in water recirculation system and fed to apparent satiation with the following diets: control diet (meat and bones Meal and soybean protein concentrate as the main protein sources); 17% LM (17% crude protein of Linseed Meal replacing meat and bones Meal); 17% DLM (17% crude protein of demucilaged Linseed Meal replacing meat and bones Meal) or 35% DLM (35% crude protein of demucilaged Linseed Meal replacing meat and bones Meal). At the end of the experiment, weight, total and standard length of the animals did not differ between treatments, but lower values of feed conversion were found in the control group. As for metabolic response, animals fed with 35% DLM diet showed higher level of glucose and cholesterol in plasma, but triglycerides, albumin, total protein and liver biochemistry (glycogen, glucose, lactate, protein, amino acids, ammonia) were not changed between treatments. The results demonstrated that in natura and demucilaged Linseed Meal can be used in the diet of jundiá without compromising metabolic parameters and final weight.

Apos a demucilagem, os niveis de proteina bruta aumentaram e houve reducao da fibra soluvel do farelo de linhaca. Durante sete semanas, 240 juvenis de jundia foram criados em sistema de recirculacao de agua e alimentados ate a saciedade aparente com as seguintes dietas: dieta controle (farinha de carne e ossos e concentrado proteico de soja como as principais fontes proteicas); 17%FL (17% da proteina bruta do farelo de linhaca em substituicao da farinha de carne e ossos); 17% FLD (17% da proteina bruta do farelo de linhaca demucilada em substituicao da farinha de carne e ossos); 35%FLD (35% da proteina bruta do farelo de linhaca demucilada em substituicao da farinha de carne e ossos). Ao final do experimento, peso e comprimento total e padrao nao diferiram entre os tratamentos, porem menores valores de conversao alimentar foram encontrados no grupo controle. Em relacao as repostas metabolicas, os animais alimentados com 35%FLD apresentaram maiores niveis de glicose e colesterol no plasma, porem triglicerideos, albumina, proteinas totais e os parâmetros bioquimicos do figado (glicogenio, glicose, lactato, proteina, aminoacidos, amonia) nao foram alterados entre os tratamentos. Os resultados demonstraram que tanto o farelo de linhaca in natura como o demucilado podem ser utilizados na dieta de jundias sem comprometer os parâmetros metabolicos e de peso final.
