We confirm the importance in women of risk factors similar to those found in men, i.e., fair complexion, sun exposure, and smoking. Risk was related strongly to lifetime solar radiation (odds ratio [OR]=13.5 for highest quartile of exposure, 95 percent confidence interval [CI]=4.5–40.6, P trend <0.0001) and time spent outdoors (OR=4.7 for highest quartile of average yearly hours, CI=1.9–12.1, P trend=0.01). Further, among women with high lifetime solar-radiation exposure, those who used Lip protection once a day or less had twice the risk of Lip Cancer than women who used Lip protection more than once a day (OR=7.3, CI=1.9–27.2 cf OR=3.2, CI=1.1–9.2). These findings show that solar radiation is a major risk factor for Lip Cancer and suggest that Lip sunscreening is protective, thereby supporting the hypothesis that use of Lipstick and other sunscreening agents by women has contributed to their lower incidence of this disease.

The hospital records of patients with pathologically confirmed Lip squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC, n = 112) and Lip basal cell carcinoma (LBCC, n = 21) were reviewed. Differences in clinicopathological characteristics between LSCC and LBCC, upper and lower Lip, and status of second primary tumors were compared by chi-square test and logistic regression. The prognostic factors for LSCC were analyzed by Cox regression. Compared with LBCC patients, LSCC patients were men-predominant (p 4 cm (CHR = 8.19, p = 0.006), lymph node involvement (CHR = 11.48, p < 0.001), and recurrence (CHR = 3.96, p = 0.01); whereas for disease-free survival were moderately to poorly differentiated LSCC (CHR = 4.97, p = 0.002) and alcohol consumption (CHR = 3.13, p = 0.04). LSCC and lower Lip Cancer were highly associated with HRLFs.

Application of vermillion myocutaneous flap in restoration after Lip Cancer resection

METHOD From July 2012 to December 2019, six patients with Lip Cancer admitted in our department were included in this study. Total defect of the whole layer of the Lip, accounted for 1/3-1/2 of the total length of the Lip after tumor resection, were repaired by vermillion myocutaneous flap. For the case defect presenting >1/2 of the total length of the Lip, a local rotational flap was designed with vermillion myocutaneous flap compound to repair the defect. RESULTS At present, the patients were followed up for 6 months to 7 years. There was no tumor recurrence. The aesthetic effects and function of Lip after operation were ideal, with satisfactory outcomes. CONCLUSION Vermillion myocutaneous flap with the labial artery as the axis was an effective method to restore the anatomical structure and function of the Lip. In the presence of a defect area of larger than 1/2 of the length of the whole Lip, local skin flap can be used for simultaneous repair in order to achieve satisfactory outcome.
