The L. vulgaris population from Bozcaada presents body proportions and morphological features of subsp. schmidtlerorum, such as small body length, absence of the tail filament, and dorsal crest with pointed free margin. Similarly, phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial DNA sequences (ND4, 16S rRNA) place the Bozcaada population within Clade E of the recent L. vulgaris phylogeny, which consists of L. v. schmidtlerorum populations.

Location The Balkan Peninsula. Methods Phylogeographical analyses were conducted using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences sampled from 49 populations of L. vulgaris. A fossil-calibrated estimate of divergence times among major mtDNA clades was obtained. Results We detected seven parapatrically distributed mtDNA clades with very little admixture among populations. Whereas most clades diverged in the Pleistocene, the earliest splits between Caucasian, Anatolian and Balkan clades occurred in the Pliocene. Clades C, D, K and M have local distributions within the Balkans and have evolved in isolation from other groups. Clade L originated in the Pannonian Basin and northern margin of the Balkan Peninsula and recently expanded across central and western Europe. Clades H and E have recently arrived in the Balkans from source populations in the Apennine Peninsula and Anatolia, respectively. Main conclusions The history of L. vulgaris involves multiple, independent refugial populations in the Balkans. Only one of them, located at the northern periphery of the peninsula, showed evidence of post-glacial expansion into western and northern Europe. The Balkans have therefore served as a reservoir of old diversity for L. vulgaris. By contrast, populations at the northern and eastern frontiers of the peninsula have experienced non-equilibrium dynamics. Our dating revealed that very little, if any, pre-Pliocene genetic diversity has survived in Europe, despite an extensive fossil record for this species in the Miocene and Pliocene. Differentiation of the European mtDNA clades thus seems to have been primarily moulded by Pleistocene climate change. None of the currently recognized subspecies present in the Balkans are reciprocally monophyletic in their mtDNA. We hypothesize that incomplete lineage sorting and mtDNA introgression account for the observed discrepancies.

Fine scale spatial genetic structure of two syntopic newts across a network of ponds: implications for conservation

Multilocus genotypes were used to detect and measure genetic variation patterns, population genetic structure and levels of gene flow. We interpret results on the basis of the different dispersal properties of the two species and explored the influence of certain landscape features, such as road and channel networks, on population connectivity. We found marked differences in the spatial genetic patterns of the respective species, which can be explained by their different dispersal properties. The road network seems to act as a barrier to dispersal in the overland dispersing L. vulgaris , while the channel network maintains connectivity in the aquatic dispersing T. macedonicus . The simultaneous and comparative consideration of species in a given area offers a much better understanding of the processes that govern population dynamics and persistence, providing valuable knowledge useful in conservation and management design.

By projecting phylogenies into the morphospace of the skull shape, we explore the variation in and differentiation of this complex morphological structure within a phylogenetic framework. For these analyses, we used a dataset that covers the most southern part of the species distribution range, including all conventionally recognized subspecies. The study revealed different patterns of divergence in skull shape between sexes, which is paralleled by intraspecific differentiation. The divergence in dorsal skull shape is concordant with the phylogenetic divergence, as the most diverged clades of the smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris kosswigi and Lissotriton vulgaris lantzi) exhibit a skull shape that significantly diverges from the smooth newts mean shape configuration. The results of this study also indicate that ventral skull portion, which is more directly related to feeding and foraging, shows higher variation between populations than dorsal skull portion, which appears to be less variable and phylogenetically informative.

Contributions to the Knowledge on the Amphibians and Reptiles of Teleorman County (Southern Romania)

Russian Journal of Herpetology, 2011Co-Authors: Alexandru Iftime, Oana IftimeAbstract:We report a number of populations of Lissotriton vulgaris vulgaris from Caras-Severin county (south-western Romania) exhibiting some morphological characteristics reminiscent of the «southern» L. vulgaris subspecies group ( L. v. meridionalis , L. v. graecus , L. v. ampelensis ). The possible affinities of these populations with L. v. ampelensis and L. v. ampelensis – L. v. vulgaris intergrading populations, geographically the closest that present similar morphological traits, are discussed.

Ossification Variability in the Cranial Skeleton of Lissotriton vulgaris (L.) (Caudata) from Urbanization Areas

BerzinAbstract:This paper considers the influence of environmental conditions on the specificity of the process of ossification of the skull of yearlings of common newt Lissotriton vulgaris (Linnaeus, 1758), depending on the degree of urbanization. It is found that the degree of sagittal suture closure in the cranial skeleton of yearlings depends on the level of mineralization of surface waters in which the common newt develops. The accumulating nature of urban ecosystems promotes the intensification of the mineral metabolism of juveniles due to the abundance of calciphilous animals in newt habitats and their dominance in the diet of newt yearlings. This contributing factor accelerates the formation of cranial ossifications in animals from the residential part of urban agglomeration.

Population data is presented year-by-year for the number of animals, sex ratio, and species-specific fecundity including the number and quality of spawns for the following amphibian species: Salamandrella keyserligii, Rana arvalis, R. temporaria, Lissotriton vulgaris, and Pelophylax ridibundus. These data provide an excellent opportunity to assess an urban environment from an animal population-wide perspective, as well as revealing the forces driving animal adaptation to the anthropogenic transformation of habitats.

The herpetofauna of the south-western part of Mehedinţi County, Romania

This is how we managed to encounter 14 amphibian species (Salamandra salamandra, Lissotriton vulgaris, Triturus cristatus, Triturus dobrogicus, Bombina bombina, Bombina variegata, Pelobates fuscus, Bufo bufo, Bufo viridis, Hyla arborea, Pelophylax ridibundus, Pelophylax lessonae, Rana dalmatina, Rana temporaria) plus Pelophylax kl. esculentus and 15 reptile species (Emys orbicularis, Testudo hermanni, Ablepharus kitaibelii, Lacerta agilis, Lacerta viridis, Podarcis muralis, Podarcis taurica, Darevskia praticola, Anguis fragilis, Zamenis longissimus, Dolichophis caspius, Coronella austriaca, Natrix natrix, Natrix tessellata, Vipera ammodytes). Salamandra salamandra, Bombina variegata and Rana temporaria were identified at very low altitudes, lower than any other indication from Romania up to present. This is explained by the fact that mountain valleys, bearing here a typical aspect, reach all the way to the Danube, carrying with them the occurring species. In Blahnita Plain, Darevskia praticola appears in cleared areas, being present in the vegetation girdles bordering the canals found between agricultural fields.

2012Co-Authors: Horia Vlad Bogdan, Larisa Badar, Alexandra Maria PopoviciAbstract:The newt populations from the habitat in Maru are large, Lissotriton vulgaris being represented by 1314 individuals and Triturus cristatus by 206 individuals. The dynamic of the populations is similar to other populations from Romania. However, if the evolution of the L. vulgaris population is linear, similar with the ones previously described, for T. cristatus is oscillatory. L. vulgaris has a more synchronous reproduction and it leaves the water faster than T. cristatus. In comparison with populations from the Apuseni Mountains, in Maru the reproduction period takes place approximately 2 weeks sooner. All in all, the females are more numerous in the populations, but at the beginning of the aquatic period the males predominate.
