Five characteristics were analyzed: larval and pupal developmental durations and pupal length, diameter, and weight. The comparison of the within- and between-family variances by variance analyses showed that the Cuban strain was generally more variable than the laboratory strain. Thus, the latter strain shows a lower genetic variability probably proceeding from a genetic drift or bottlenecks. Heritability computations by the parent-child regression method also revealed some differences in the genetic variability of the two strains. Pupal length was selected in a Cuban strain for eight generations. An obvious differentiation was obtained between the low and the high selected lines. Such a selection could be used to improve biological control results.

Biological Control, 1992Co-Authors: B Pintureau, S GrenierAbstract:Abstract Comparisons were made between our laboratory strain of Lixophaga Diatraeae, which became impossible to develop on an artificial diet after 1984, and a newly collected strain from Cuba, which is still able to develop on an artificial diet. We compared morphological (puparial length and diameter) and biological features (larval and pupal developmental durations) of the two strains. Clear differences in the time required for pupal development and in puparial diameter were noted. In both strains, the larval development was longer and the puparial size was larger in the females than in the males. The puparial length and diameter were positively correlated. Especially in males, larval developmental duration was negatively correlated with pupal developmental duration and puparial length and diameter.

Trial of Lixophaga Diatraeae Townsend propagation inoculated on host Galleria mellonella.
Guangxi Agricultural Sciences, 2010Co-Authors: Pan Xuehong, Huang Chenghua, Deng Zhanyun, Yan Meixin, Wei JinjuAbstract:The present study has been conducted to observe the larva number in female adult of Lixophaga Diatraeae in order to make mass propagation and utilization of Lixophaga Diatraeae using host Galleria mellonella,and to find out the effects of number of Lixophaga Diatraeae larva inoculation and the host Galleria mellonella during different growth period on number of Lixophaga Diatraeae pupa and survival and death number of Galleria mellonella.The results revealed that number of larva in each female Lixophaga Diatraeae was over 170 on an average.The number of Lixophaga Diatraeae pupa was added with increase of inoculation lava number,which didn’t have significant difference between 35-38 and 45-48 inoculation number.The number of Lixophaga Diatraeae pupa was added with increase in growth period of host Galleria mellonel,and the number of Lixophaga Diatraeae pupa,survival and death number of Galleria mellonella didn’t have significant difference between 40 and 50 days growth period.Considering feed cost and emergency time of host,35-38 inoculation number of Lixophaga Diatraeae larva and 40 days growing period of host Galleria mellonella have been found to be the best.

Sugar Crops of China, 2008Co-Authors: Liang ChaoxuAbstract:A strain of Lixophaga Diatraeae Townsend imported from Cuba was assessed for its potential as a biological agent to control sugarcane borers by Guangxi Sugarcane Research Institute from 2004 to 2005. The results showed that: Cuban fly can parasitize some pests, such as Chilo infuscatellus Snellen, Proceras venosatum Walker, Tetramoera schistaceana Snellen and Ostrinia furnacalis Guenee etc., and the pupae rate was about 70% - 90%, the emergence rate was about 80% - 90%. Galleria mellonella can be used as an artificial host to breed Cuban fly. The average rate of pupae was 100.46%, and the average rate of adult emergencies 86.32%. Cuban fly likes warm and humidity habitation. The optimum temperature for Cuba fly development was from 26 to 28℃ and relative humidity was 75% - 85% . The duration of the biological cycle varies between 25 and 40 days. Inoculation (Parasitic) to Pupating were 8-10 days, pupae period was 6-10 days, the longevity of male adult was 3-6 days,the female was 20-30 days. It had an adverse effect for Cuban fly growing, pupating and emerging when the temperature was below 0℃ and above 42℃. After being stored between 8 and 10℃ from 5 to 10 days, the rate of adult emergence was not influenced, but the pupae period was longer. The study guides the application of Cuban fly for a biological control of sugarcane borers in Guangxi sugarcane production; it plays an important role to advance the sustainable development of cane sugar trade in Guangxi.
