chick flicks as feminist texts the appropriation of the Male Gaze in thelma louise
Women's Studies in Communication, 2000Co-Authors: Brenda CooperAbstract:Through an explication of the feMale Gazes underlying the narrative structure of the 1991 film Thelma and Louise, this study suggests explanations for the movie's wide appeal among women spectators. The film's feMale Gazes undercut and appropriate the dominant Male Gazes typical of mainstream Hollywood cinema by using mockery as a narrative device to illustrate the sexism inherent in the Male Gaze, and it is precisely this appropriation of patriarchal construction that offers pleasure to women spectators. Three narrative devices structuring the film's mockery are explicated: stereotypes of lecherous and testosterone-crazed men; depicting men as spectacles for women's attention; and the celebration of women's friendships. The result of the devices of mockery is a strong feMale Gaze that challenges, resists and defies patriarchy, and opens the film's text to a feminist reading.

The Portrayal Of Male Gaze In Video Advertising Carl’s Jr Cod Fish Sandwich (2013)
2019Co-Authors: Tashya Ra WinahyuAbstract:In 2013, in American television, Carl’s Jr. aired another sexually explicit advertisement starring Nina Agdal promoting their new menu Cod Fish Sandwich. This video shows a whole lot more of nudity than the sandwich itself. The study aims to examine the Male Gaze that depicted throughout the video by using Male Gaze theory by Laura Mulvey and also gender advertisement by Erving Goffman. The qualitative method is used to reveal the portrayal of Male Gaze as also John Fiske’s Television Culture as an approach. The purpose of this research study is to introduce readers to Male Gaze theory and related research, to extend Male Gaze theory to our understanding of women’s substance use and/or abuse and immersed forms of sexual objectification via sexually objectifying environments, provide an overview of media major contribution on sexual objectification of women. The finding shows that the advertising has more meaning to it than just promoting the sandwich and even though feminism movements have been around for decades in the US, women are still being hypersexualized.

Fathers, daughters, and self-objectification: does bonding style matter?
Body image, 2014Co-Authors: Haley Miles-mclean, Miriam Liss, Mindy J. ErchullAbstract:As women are exposed to objectification and the "Male Gaze," they self-objectify, which predicts negative psychological outcomes. Given the centrality of the "Male Gaze," positive father/child relationships may have a buffering effect. In this study, women (N=447) completed a survey measuring paternal bonding (care and overprotection), self-objectification, negative eating attitudes, and depression. Women were categorized into four groups based on bonding style. Analyses indicated an interaction such that women who reported high care and low overprotection reported the fewest negative eating attitudes. A path model was tested for each group. The fit of the high care/high overprotection group's model significantly differed from that of the high care/low overprotection group. The relationships between body surveillance and shame as well as between shame and negative eating attitudes were stronger in the former group. These findings suggest that caring but overprotective fathers may exacerbate the negative effects of body surveillance and shame.

Visual Displeasure: Adolescence and the Erotics of the Queer Male Gaze in Marco Berger’s Ausente
New Visions of Adolescence in Contemporary Latin American Cinema, 2018Co-Authors: Geoffrey MaguireAbstract:This chapter discusses the formal and narrative representation of the adolescent queer Male Gaze in Marco Berger’s Ausente (2011). Through a consideration of the ethical issues at stake in the haptic filming of the teenage body in various cinematic spaces (the swimming pool, the changing room and the apartment), I argue that Ausente’s ‘visual erotics’ (Marks, 2000) create a dynamic, intersubjective relationship between viewer and image. Drawing primarily on the work of Laura Marks (2000) and Laura Mulvey (1975), the chapter ultimately concludes that these haptic filmic techniques demand an engaged form of spectatorship, which denies a hierarchical identification with the adolescent queer subject and, instead, promotes an embodied response to the film’s presentation of non-normative sexual desire.
