    Abstract:

    This is the first report on attracticides loaded with 1.6 or 16% pheromone, with or without 6% permethrin, tested for Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris) and Pandemis pyrusana Kearfott male control. Different densities of attracticide sources (750-3,600 droplets ha-1) homogeneously applied on the canopy were compared in apple (Malus pumila Mill.) orchards. Before attracticide application, no differences in male captures using pheromone baited trap were observed. Afterwards, a significant reduction of captures occurred along with the increasing pheromone concentration, when larger density sources were used. The addition of permethrin into the attracticide formulation, however, did not significantly improve the reduction of males. Overall, these results suggest that mating disruption or other mechanism, instead of the killing effect attributed to attracticides, controlled males. The attracticide formulations matrix reported is suggested to be tested as an alternative to the current ones used for mating disruption.     Des diffuseurs à phéromones sexuelles de synthèse ont été installés en 1992 et 1993 dans trois vergers de pommiers (Malus pumila) du Québec, à raison de 1000 diffuseurs ha lors d'un essai de régie des populations de carpocapse de la pomme, Cydia pomonella [Lepidoptera : Tortricidae]. De 1991 à 1992, soit après un an d'essai, les dégâts de carpocapse à la récolte sont passés de 54 % à 32 %, de 11 % à 2 %, et se sont maintenus à 0 % dans les vergers à forte, moyenne et faible pressions de carpocapse, respectivement. Après deux ans d'essai, les dégâts sont demeurés au même niveau ou ont été diminués davantage selon le type de programme de répression utilisé contre les autres ravageurs. En 1993, une baisse de 75-100 % des captures a aussi été observée dans les pièges à phéromones par rapport aux captures observées en 1991.Pheromone dispensers were installed in 1992 and 1993, at a rate of 1000 dispensers ha1, in three Quebec apple (Malus pumila) orchards, to reduce populations of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella [Lepidoptera : Tortricidae]. After one year, codling moth damage at harvest decreased from 54% to 32%, from 11% to 2% and remained at 0% in the high, medium and low codling moth pressure orchards, respectively. Damage remained at the same level after the second year, or further decreased, depending on the type of spray program used against other pests.     Au Québec, la stratégie de lutte contre le tétranyque rouge du pommier (Panonychus ulmi) et le tétranyque à deux points (Tetranychus urticae) dans les vergers de pommier (Malus pumila) repose actuellement sur l'emploi d'acaricides coûteux. Par ailleurs, les consommateurs exigent de plus en plus des fruits exempts de pesticides. Dans ce contexte, l'utilisation de méthodes de lutte non chimiques suscite un grand intérêt auprès des pomiculteurs. Depuis plusieurs années, les efforts de recherche et les essais conduits aux États-Unis et en Europe ont donné un large essor à l'utilisation de souches d'acariens prédateurs résistants à certaines classes de pesticides. Au Québec, des expériences de lutte biologique avec l'acarien prédateur Amblyseius fallacis [Acarina: Phytoseiidae] ont été entreprises depuis quelques années.     Rhagoletis pomonella Walsh (Diptera: Tephritidae) originating from domesticated apple (Malus pumila), hawthorn (Crataegus mollis) (Rosaceae), and flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) (Cornaceae) were tested sequentially in flight-tunnel assays to volatile blends previously identified from the three fruit types. The majority of flies flew to odor sources containing their natal blend (68-83%). Some flies from each fruit type also flew to non-natal fruit blends (11-39%), but of these non-natal responders the vast majority were flies that responded to their natal blend as well. The results indicate that individual flies within R. pomonella populations infesting different host types have different degrees of specificity with respect to discriminating among fruit volatile blends, and that a moderate proportion of apple, hawthorn, and dogwood flies (10-30%) are broad responders, with the capacity to recognize and orient to more than one blend. The observed variability in response specificity could facilitate sympatric shifts to new host plants.

    In previous flight-tunnel tests Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh) (Diptera: Tephritidae) flies originating from domestic apple (Malus pumila), hawthorn (Crataegus spp.), and flowering dogwood (Cornus florida), displayed greater numbers of upwind flights to blends of volatiles identified from their natal fruit compared to non-natal fruit. Here, we show that when certain non-host volatiles were added to the host blend, significantly fewer apple, hawthorn, and dogwood flies exhibited sustained upwind flight to the source. Specifically, the upwind flight of apple flies to the apple blend was significantly antagonized by the addition of the hawthorn or dogwood blends, the addition of 3-methylbutan-1-ol alone (a key volatile for hawthorn and dogwood flies), or the combination of 3-methylbutan-1-ol and another key dogwood volatile, 1-octen-3-ol. Similarly, the upwind flight of dogwood and hawthorn flies to their respective natal blends was antagonized by the addition of the apple blend or the key apple volatile butyl hexanoate. Experiments were also conducted to determine whether non-natal fruit volatiles could disrupt the close-range flight response of flies to the visual stimulus of fruit alone, represented by an odorless red sphere. Tests with apple-origin flies showed that when the hawthorn blend, the dogwood blend, or the key antagonist volatiles from each (3-methylbutan-1-ol and 1-octen-3-ol) were added to a red sphere fruit mimic, significantly lower proportions of flies were captured, compared with captures when no odor was present.
