Three-dimensional photographic analysis of the face in European adults from southern Spain with normal occlusion: reference anthropometric measurements

The purpose of this study was to analyze the faces of a sample of healthy European adults from southern Spain with normal occlusion in order to establish reference facial soft tissue anthropometric parameters in this specific geographic-ethnic population, as well as to analyze sexual dimorphism. Methods A sample of 100 healthy adult volunteers consisting of 50 women (mean age, 22.92 ± 1.56 years) and 50 men (mean age, 22.37 ± 2.12 years) were enrolled in this study. All participants had normal occlusion, skeletal Class I, mesofacial pattern, and healthy body mass index. Three-dimensional photographs of the faces were captured non-invasively using Planmeca ProMax 3D ProFace^®. Thirty landmarks related to the face, eyes, nose, and orolabial and chin areas were identified. Results Male displayed higher values in all vertical and transversal dimensions, with the exception of the lower lip height. Larger differences between sexes were observed in face, mandible, and nose. Male also had higher values in the angular measurements which referred to the nose. No sex differences were found in transverse upper lip Prominence or transverse Mandibular Prominence. No differences were found in the ratio measurements, with the exception of intercantal width/nasal width, which was higher in women than in men. Conclusions Reference anthropometric measurements of facial soft tissues have been established in European adults from southern Spain with normal occlusion. Significant sexual dimorphism was found, with remarkable differences in size between sexes

Retinoic Acid Treatment Induces the Ectopic Exporession of Retinoic Acid Receptor ,8 Gene and Excessive Cell Death in the Embryonic Mouse Face (retinoic acidiretinoic acid receptor geneslm situ hybridizationicell death/mouse face development)

The abnormal morphology was attributed to the excessive cell death in the dorsal aspects of the maxillary and Mandibular Prominences of the first pharyngeal arch and in the proximal region of the Mandibular Prominence. To investigate the expression of the RA receptor (RAR) genes in abnormal face morphogenesis, in situ hybridization was performed. The distribution patterns of RAR (Y and y transcripts were not altered in the treated embryos. By contrast, the teratogenic dose of RA increased the level of RAR p transcripts, as early as 3 hr after RA-treatment, in the regions where the RAR p expression is at a low level in normal development. The increase of RAR p transcripts was detected by 12 hr, and declined to the low level within 24 hr after the treatment. The regions where ectopic expression of RAR p gene was observed included the areas where the excessive cell death occurred 9-12 hr after RA-treatment. These results suggest that ectopic induction of RAR p by RA may lead to the excessive cell death, threfore may cause abnormal morphogenesis.

Craniofacial cephalometric morphology in 6-year-old children with isolated cleft lip, isolated submucous cleft palate, and combined cleft lip and submucous cleft palate.
Scandinavian Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Hand Surgery, 2020Co-Authors: Arja Heliövaara, Jorma RautioAbstract:One hundred and twenty-one cleft children (67 with isolated cleft lip (CL), 32 with isolated submucous cleft palate (SMCP), and 22 with combined cleft lip and submucous cleft palate (CL + SMCP)) were compared retrospectively from lateral cephalograms taken at a mean age of 6.2 years (range 5.5–7.9). None of the children had had their palates repaired or been operated on to treat velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). The children with CL + SMCP and CL had similar morphology. They had greater maxillary length, greater maxillary and Mandibular Prominence, less vertical growth pattern, less deep nasopharyngeal airways, and thinner upper lips than those with isolated SMCP. After 6 years of age one patient with CL + SMCP, none with CL, and 16 with SMCP needed operations for VPI. This small series suggests that children with CL + SMCP and SMCP have different morphology. Although CL + SMCP is a combination of two types of clefts, it seems to be associated with similar morphology to CL.

Craniofacial cephalometric morphology in six‐year‐old girls with submucous cleft palate and isolated cleft palate
Acta Odontologica Scandinavica, 2020Co-Authors: Arja Heliövaara, Reijo Ranta, Jorma RautioAbstract:Ninety‐three girls with cleft palate (53 submucous cleft palate (SMCP) and 40 isolated cleft palate (ICP)), mean age 6.2 years (range 5.5–7.5), were compared retrospectively from lateral cephalograms. Forty‐three patients with SMCP had had surgical treatment at the mean age of 3.4 years (range 0.9–6.8), 10 of the SMCP patients were unoperated. Twenty‐six patients with ICP had clefts of the hard and soft palate, and 14 had clefts of the soft palate only. Palatal closure of ICP had been done at the mean age of 1.5 years (range 1.0–2.1). The skeletal craniofacial morphology was similar in SMCP and ICP. The maxilla and mandible were well related to each other but slightly retrusive in relation to the cranial base. The slight skeletal retrusion was significantly more masked by soft tissue in patients with SMCP. The patients with SMCP showed higher values for soft tissue maxillary and Mandibular Prominence.

CONTRIBUTION OF EARLY-EMIGRATING MIDBRAIN CREST CELLS TO THE DENTAL MESENCHYME OF Mandibular MOLAR TEETH IN RAT EMBRYOS

Although the contribution of midbrain and hindbrain crest cells to the first pharyngeal arch has been previously examined in rodent embryos, no direct evidence exists that these cells are actually involved in the dental mesenchyme. In order to elucidate the contribution of the cranial neural crest cells in tooth formation, we first identified the emigration sites and stages providing the crest cells that migrate to the presumed tooth-forming region of the Mandibular Prominence. Focal labeling with DiI was performed at the midbrain and anterior hindbrain crests in rat embryos, and the labeled embryos were cultured for 30 or 60 hr. The resultant migration patterns indicated that posterior midbrain crest cells emigrating by the end of the 4-somite stage predominantly migrated to the region where tooth buds normally develop. Second, we established a new type of long-term culture system in which whole embryo culture is followed by a Mandibular organ culture. Using this system, rat embryos were maintained from the early-somite stage and the molars in the explants were able to reach the bud stage within 8 days. Finally, to ascertain if posterior midbrain crest cells emigrating by the end of the 4-somite stage were involved in the dental mesenchyme, these cells were labeled with DiI and processed for the long-term culture. Labeled crest cells were clearly detectable in the dental mesenchyme. These findings indicate that the early-emigrating posterior midbrain crest cells contribute to Mandibular molar tooth development in rat embryos.
