automating Manufacturability Evaluation in cad systems through expert systems approaches
Expert Systems With Applications, 1994Co-Authors: A R VenkatachalamAbstract:Abstract Design for Manufacturability (DFM) represents a new awareness of the importance of product design as an integral part of manufacturing activities. Good design guidelines exist in industry for frequently used manufacturing processes. These guidelines are systematic statements of good design practices, empirically derived over years of design and manufacturing experience. Ensuring that the given product design conforms to each of the guidelines specific to the selected process results in better Manufacturability. To meet the objectives of the DFM approach, design and manufacturing planning activities have to be combined into a single engineering effort and applied througout the life cycle of a product. Computer-aided design (CAD) systems offer powerful features such as the ability to develop complex solid models and perform engineering analyses, including stress analysis, interobject interference, collision detection, and inertial analysis. However, a prominent limitation faced by designers in CAD systems is the lack of “intelligence.” Though designs could be developed, analyzed, and perfected from a functional viewpoint in CAD systems, Manufacturability consideration may get little or no attention at all. As a result, product designs that are functionally sound may be developed at a high manufacturing cost. Thus, intelligence should be incorporated in CAD systems, whereby product designs could not only be developed and analyzed but also evaluated for cost and Manufacturability. This study attempts to perform this task automatically in a CAD system using a knowledge-based approach: the Manufacturability criteria are considered for milling and drilling operations performed on a computerized numerically controlled (CNC) milling machine. The results obtained from the application of the expert system suggest that the expert systems methodology is a feasible method for implementing Manufacturability Evaluation capability in CAD systems.

An AHP method based design for manufacture for parts Manufacturability Evaluation
BioTechnology: An Indian Journal, 2013Co-Authors: Qingming Fan, Hong Jun LiuAbstract:In the light of growing global competition, organizations around the world today are constantly under pressure to produce high-quality products at an economical price. Design forManufacturability (DFM) requires product designers to simultaneously consider the manufacturing issues of a product along with the geometrical and design aspects. The integration of design andmanufacturing activities into one common engineering effort has been recognized as a key strategy for survival and growth. DFM requires product designers to simultaneously consider the manufacturing issues of a product along with the geometrical and design aspects. In this paper, partManufacturabilitywas analyzed in detail. An analytic hierarchy process (AHP)method is introduced to assignweighting factors to features to reflect their functional importance. Results from the case studies show that the system is capable of generating sound Manufacturability indices that could help product designers inmaking designs easier to manufacture

research on aero engine blade information model based on Manufacturability Evaluation
Advanced Materials Research, 2011Co-Authors: Qingming Fan, Yan Cao, Hong Jun LiuAbstract:According to the engineering demands of the Manufacturability Evaluation, the Aero engine blade part information model built up based on the generalized feature and STEP standard, and based on the secondary development of UG software, a CAD system based on features is realized. The system can realize automatic feature recognition. Based on the part information model that has been built up, the system can generate STEP document automatically, can provide various blade part information for the subsequent Manufacturability Evaluation of the design. This helps to realize the integration and parallel of CAD and the subsequent process. The CAD/CPAPP/DFM information integration can be realized by using the blade part information that has been built up.

International Asia Conference on Informatics in Control Automation and Robotics, 2009Co-Authors: Hong Jun Liu, Qingming FanAbstract:In this paper according to the analysis of the Manufacturability of aeroengine blade, the Manufacturability Evaluation is considered a multi-level decision problem, and Manufacturability qualitative Evaluation method based on production rule and Manufacturability quantitative Evaluation method based on AHP comprehensive Evaluation are established. Due to the complexity of the latter method, the detailed solving steps of the process are present and an example is taken for explanation. Using above research methods, product design can be guided according to feedback information by evaluating the part Manufacturability.

automated Manufacturability Evaluation system for sheet metal components in mass production
International Journal of Production Research, 2005Co-Authors: K. V. Ramana, P V M RaoAbstract:Automated Manufacturability Evaluation of a given design is a key requirement in realizing complete integration of design and process planning. It would still be better to control the designing process itself with Manufacturability information. The purpose of such an Evaluation is to assist designers in their effort to come up with manufacturable parts economizing in terms of cost and time, without compromising on quality and functional requirements. The present work deals with one such system developed for Manufacturability Evaluation of sheet metal components. Unlike most of the work done in the sheet metal area in the past, which concentrates on specific domain or phase of Manufacturability Evaluation, the present work is more comprehensive combining characteristics of all the existing methods and phases of Manufacturability Evaluation. The prime components of the present system are design Evaluation and process plan generation. Design evaluator and process planner use different types of data and knowl...

Automated Manufacturability Evaluation of Sheet Metal Components: A Review
Volume 3: 7th Design for Manufacturing Conference, 2002Co-Authors: K. V. RamanaAbstract:Accounting for Manufacturability considerations at the product design stage is not only important but earlier they are considered in the design cycle, better it is. When computers are used extensively for design and manufacturing, automated Manufacturability Evaluation is a powerful option. This paper presents a review on automated Manufacturability Evaluation of sheet metal parts. While a large number of technical papers including reviews have been published on the general subject of Design For Manufactuarability (DFM), there is no paper in the literature that provides a review of automated Manufacturability Evaluation of sheet metal parts. In this work existing automated Manufacturability Evaluation systems for sheet metal parts are reviewed. The product, process and resource information models together with integration issues for automated Manufacturability Evaluation are discussed. Some of the future research challenges in this area are presented at the end.Copyright © 2002 by ASME

Rapid tooling Manufacturability Evaluation using fuzzy-AHP methodology
International Journal of Production Research, 2007Co-Authors: Nagahanumaiah, B Ravi, N. P. MukherjeeAbstract:Rapid tooling (RT) processes driven by rapid prototyping (such as stereolithography and selective laser sintering) can reduce mold development lead-time by 50% or more, though there are certain limitations in terms of mold materials, accuracy, and surface finish. This paper presents a systematic approach for Manufacturability analysis of molds produced by rapid tooling methods, based on three aspects: mold feature Manufacturability, secondary elements compatibility, and cost effectiveness. The geometric features of functional elements of the mold (core, cavity, side core, etc.) are evaluated for Manufacturability using fuzzy-analytic hierarchy process (Fuzzy-AHP) methodology. The secondary elements of mold (parting surface, ejectors, cooling lines, etc.) are checked for compatibility with RT mold properties (machinability, wear resistance, and surface evenness). Finally, the cost of RT mold is estimated using a semi-empirical model based on cost drivers and cost modifiers, and compared with that of a conv...
