    Abstract:

    Abstract This article analyses the interplay between inter-State obligations to increase scientific knowledge, develop research capacity and transfer Marine Technology in accordance with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14.a, with a view to contributing to enhanced implementation of the international law of the sea (SDG 14.c), and providing access for small-scale artisanal fishers to Marine resources (SDG 14.b). It proposes to do so by relying not only on the international law of the sea, but also on international biodiversity law (particularly the Convention on Biological Diversity) and international human rights law (particularly the human right to science). The article seeks to provide a reflection on the opportunities arising from a mutually supportive interpretation of different international law instruments with regard to the means of implementation for SDG 14 in synergy with other SDGs (particularly SDG 17 on ‘Partnerships for the Goals’ and its targets related to Technology transfer, capacity-building and partnerships).

The reflection starts from observing an increasing linkage in international policy-making between Technology transfer and small-scale fisheries, as well as related challenges and risks. The article then explores inter-State obligations related to Technology transfer, focusing on the duty to cooperate and share information with a view to fleshing out the concept of partnerships for sustainable development. The article concludes by suggesting how the international law of the sea can be better implemented to enhance international cooperation on Marine Technology transfer to the benefit of small-scale fisheries, on the basis of the normative standards of the human right to science and the lessons learnt in international biodiversity law, with a view to furthering the synergetic implementation of the SDGs through genuine partnerships.

  • Adjustment Problem of National Diploma Student in Burutu Environment-A Case Study of Delta State School of Marine Technology, Burutu Delta State

    Abstract:

    This research was aimed at investigating the adjustment problems of National Diploma students in Burutu. A case study of Delta State School of Marine Technology, with a view of suggesting possible solutions to the problems. Two research questions were formulated and two hypotheses were tested at 0.05 levels of significant. The survey method was used to carry out the study. Four hundred (400) students were randomly selected in the school, Delta State School of Marine Technology, Burutu. Items means was used in answering the research questions and t-test was used in testing the hypotheses. It was revealed that many adjustment problems face the National Diploma students. They include external, internal, social development, academic which a trained and qualified counselor will go a long way to correct. Based on that recommendations were made which the researchers hope will go a long way in helping the students to overcome their adjustment problems.

  • THE KBXM TANKER HULL STRUCTURE DETAILS. IN: Marine Technology IV

    Abstract:

    This paper deals with the structural details and defines the reasoning of the side, deck, and bottom structure of a tanker ship hull. The hull structure consists 5 longitudinal girders connected mutually by transverse bulkhead stools. The orthotropic composite plates (panels) of double bottom, double side, and deck are supported by the girder system brought about in a specific way, which flows between the peaks. In the composite plate structure, the longitudinal elements are performed without break and they flow continuously throughout the ship.

    This paper analyzes the application possibilities of the Lloyd Register Provisional Rules for Enhanced Availability of Engineering Systems for Propulsion and Steering, and the R2-SA+ requirements of the American Bureau of Shipping, in tanker engine room design. The focus is on possible further development of tanker engine rooms, defined as the final solution of a tanker engine room design as an energetic center with integrated functions of propulsion and cargo systems. The possibility of new Technology application in tanker engine room design is shown.

    What started as a back-of-the-envelope type of idea to engage students in Marine Technology and connect them to Marine industries has turned into a program that involves more than 300 students, working in teams, to design and build ROVs for missions based on real-world problems, with more than 50 organizations and 45 technical professionals contributing to make the program a success. When the MATE Centre and the Marine Technology Society's (MTS) ROV Committee came together to establish the framework for a student ROV competition program, we had no idea that it would grow into something that involved so many students, educators, employers, and working professionals.

    Abstract:

    The Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center and the Marine Technology Society's (MTS) Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Committee are organizing an ROV design and building competition for high school and college students. The goals of the competition are to increase the awareness of Marine technical fields and to encourage students to participate in them, while also helping students develop the skills necessary for careers in Marine science and Technology. Employers-industry, government agencies, and research organizations-are being asked to become involved in the event by sponsoring the competing schools and colleges.
