  • culture in the labor Market Segmentation theory and perspectives of place
    Progress in Human Geography, 2001
    Co-Authors: Harald Bauder
    Abstract:

Labor Market Segmentation theory explains the economic marginalization of racial minorities, the working class and women. Economic geographers have contributed a perspective of spatial entrapment and spatially contingent job Markets. In this article I emphasize supply-side processes and the role of these processes in labor Market Segmentation theory. In particular I focus on issues of cultural experience of place and cultural representation of place. I develop this argument by integrating two bodies of literature: (1) Segmentation theory, in which the role of experience and representation of place remains undertheorized; and (2) cultural geography, in which such a conceptualization of place exists. The article follows a contemporary trend in human geography that links cultural with economic processes.

  • Market Segmentation, resource misallocation and environmental pollution
    Journal of Cleaner Production, 2019
Co-Authors: Yuanchao Bian, Kaiyi Song, Junhong Bai
    Abstract:

Abstract Based on a review of previous literature and an investigation of the empirical facts of Market Segmentation and environmental pollution in China, this study mainly analyses the impact of Market Segmentation on environmental pollution from the perspective of resource misallocation. The results generated by the Dynamic Panel Econometric Model show that Market Segmentation had a significant deteriorating effect on environmental pollution during the investigated period. In addition, Market Segmentation has significantly aggravated the misallocation of labour and capital resources, which is also an important factor leading to environmental pollution. As for the heterogeneity of different pollutants, Market Segmentation has a significant negative impact on sulpfur dioxide (SO2), smoke and dust, suspended particles (PM2.5), while for wastewater and solid waste, the impact is not significant. Furthermore, the effect of Market Segmentation on environmental pollution was significant in the period 2002–2007, and in the Eastern area, the impact was not significant due to the relatively high degree of Market integration. The conclusions will provide a reference for optimizing the relationship between local governments, and improving the environmental quality of China.

  • a cross national and cross cultural approach to global Market Segmentation an application using consumers perceived service quality
    Journal of International Marketing, 2010
Co-Authors: James Agarwal, Naresh K Malhotra, Ruth N Bolton
    Abstract:

Abstract The spread of global culture is being facilitated by the proliferation of transnational corporations, the rise of global capitalism, widespread aspiration for material possessions, and the homogenization of global consumption. The extent of convergence of cultural values across nations has been debated by international Marketing researchers. However, from a practical standpoint, transnational firms require a cross-national, cross-cultural approach to Market Segmentation that can be used to guide the development of global Marketing strategies. In this study, the authors investigate the application of cross-national versus cross-cultural approaches to Market Segmentation through a rigorous empirical investigation in the context of banking services. Although services constitute the fastest growing sector of the world economy, few studies have examined global Market Segmentation strategies for them. The authors develop theory-based cross-national hypotheses and test them by estimating a structural mo...

  • public transit Market research of low income commuters using attitude based Market Segmentation approach
    Transportation Research Record, 2017
Co-Authors: Long Cheng, Xuewu Chen, Shuo Yang
    Abstract:

In China, low-income commuters are usually concentrated in peripheral settlements outside downtown areas, where travel services are inadequately provided. These commuters are dependent on fewer travel options, considering their affordability. Based on the recognition that public transit is an important mode to enhance low-income commuters’ travel mobility, a comprehensive attitude-based Market Segmentation analysis was performed to identify distinct Market segments to best serve the needs of each segment and to develop plans to increase transit usage. First, a detailed household survey was conducted in Fushun, China, to obtain commuters’ attitudes toward daily travel. Then, factor analysis was utilized to explore latent attitudinal factors. The structural equation modeling investigated the correlations between attitudes and public transit usage. The k-means clustering was then employed to partition the transit Market into several subgroups. Finally, five segments of transit Market with distinct attitudes ...

  • an intertemporal model of international capital Market Segmentation
    Social Science Research Network, 1998
    Co-Authors: Suleyman Basak
    Abstract:

This paper develops an intertemporal model of international capital Market Segmentation. Within the model, under various forms of Segmentation/integration, the equilibrium asset prices and allocations, the risk-free interest rate, and the intertemporal consumption behavior and welfares of two countries are derived and compared. It is shown that the equilibrium interest rate is increased on integration, and that integrating Markets may be significantly welfare decreasing for one of the countries. Conditions that may lead to a decrease in welfare are investigated. The conclusions as to the effects of Segmentation on asset prices in the mean-variance model of the existing finance Segmentation literature are also shown to break down in an intertemporal model.
