  • The "Uncanny Aura" of Venus im Pelz: Masochism and Freud's Uncanny
The Germanic Review: Literature Culture Theory, 2007
    Co-Authors: Benjamin Jacob
    Abstract:

Venus im Pelz by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch is notorious as the literary depiction of Masochism. To date, critics and psychoanalysts have used Freud's theories of sexuality to critique Sacher-Masoch's novel and to offer various explanations for the existence of Masochism. They have tended, however, to overlook the significance of the word "unheimlich" ("uncanny"), which recurs through the German text. This article explores the significance of the uncanny in terms of Sacher-Masoch's book. It turns away from Freud's theories of sexuality and instead compares motifs within this masochistic tale with those described in Freud's essay. Doing so reveals multiple layers of the uncanny within this masochistic tale. The suggestion is that this strong uncanny presence explains not only the death-driven forces behind Masochism, but also the novel's enduring fascination.

  • The contribution of dream Masochism to the sex ratio difference in major depression.
    Psychiatry research, 1993
Co-Authors: Rosalind D. Cartwright, Ellen Wood
    Abstract:

Abstract Twenty-five women and twenty-one men undergoing divorce had three laboratory nights of sleep on two occasions 1 year apart. On the third night, dream reports were elicited from subjects for each period of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Three groups differing on dream “Masochism” were compared on personality, sex role, and social adjustment. Women “masochistic” dreamers had significantly higher scores on a scale of negative aspects of traditional feminine sex role identity than men or women without such dreams. They also showed less improvement at followup and had more need for emotional support. Dream Masochism may be a continuing cognitive characteristic that contributes to the vulnerability of women to major depression.

  • Is There a Relationship Between Borderline Personality Disorder and Sexual Masochism in Women
    Archives of sexual behavior, 2016
Co-Authors: Álvaro Frías, Laura González, Carol Palma, Núria Farriols
    Abstract:

Sexual Masochism disorder is considered the most prevalent paraphilia among women. However, little is known about the etiology and clinical correlates involved in this disorder. We aimed at addressing this issue through a potentially high-risk clinical cohort. This case–control study consisted of 60 women who met DSM-IV criteria for borderline personality disorder (BPD) and 60 women with other personality disorders. For both groups, sexual Masochism disorder comorbidity was assessed through the Structured Clinical Interview, Sexual Disorders Module. Several etiological, psychosexual, and personality features were measured. Sexual Masochism disorder was 10 times higher in BPD women than in women with other personality disorders (10 vs. 0 %). Among BPD women, those with sexual Masochism disorder reported more child sexual abuse, more hostile/dismissing attachments, higher sensation seeking, and more frequently exploratory/impersonal sexual fantasies than BPD without sexual Masochism. Correlation analysis confirmed a significant positive relationship between disinhibition and sexual Masochism severity for BPD women. Our findings point out that BPD women may represent a high-risk cohort, especially those with higher disinhibition and detached attachment. Childhood sexual abuse may also play a predispositional role on this comorbidity. Further research may help to elucidate the intriguing relationship between both disorders.

  • The shifting case of Masochism: Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s Venus im Pelz (1870)
    Manchester University Press, 2017
    Co-Authors: Birgit Lang
    Abstract:

This chapter investigates the agency of the sexual public, and the indirect power wielded by these readers and patients of sexology in defending the truth of sexological case writings. Through the works and the figure of Sacher-Masoch, the chapter considers how in the late nineteenth century medical case studies functioned as sites of reinterpretation by doctors, and by sexological patients and other members of an emerging sexual public. Sacher-Masoch’s literary case study, his Darwinist novella Venus im Pelz (Venus in Furs), constitutes the first fictional account of what became known as Masochism. The chapter argues that masochist readers were the first to reinterpret Sacher-Masoch’s literary investigations into Darwinism as a roman-à-clef. In doing so, some of them contributed greatly to the recategorisation of Sacher-Masoch as a masochist—through patient statements and biography, both of which informed sexological discourse.
