    Abstract:

    master data management (MDM) is of increasing importance because it is seen as a promising approach in companies torespond to a number of strategic business requirements, such as complying with an increasing number of regulations,supporting internal and external business process integration, and establishing a 360-degree-view on the customer. As aresult, software vendors such as IBM, Oracle, SAP, and TIBCO are offering MDM application systems. However, the usercommunity feels a significant mismatch between their own strategic requirements and the functionality currently offered bythe software products. As the Information Systems (IS) research community has remained silent so far regarding this researchproblem, the research presented in this paper makes intensive use of knowledge from the practitioners' community in order todesign a framework for strategic business requirements to be met by MDM systems. As an outcome of a design-orientedresearch process, the framework is an artifact which advances the scientific body of knowledge while at the same timeproviding benefit for practitioners. The framework includes seven design principles which are translated into 23requirements. The requirements form a baseline for internal and external communication in companies and for the design ofconcrete MDM systems.

    Abstract:

    master data management (MDM) brings about two major challenges for companies: 1) Companies need to cope with the complexity of the subject, and 2) companies see themselves confronted with a wide range of IT products and solutions for MDM. Presenting a Functional Reference Architecture for Corporate master data management, the present paper identifies and describes from a business perspective functional requirements MDM software should meet. The Functional Reference Architecture provides a basic terminology, a check list, and an assessment scheme for various application scenarios, like product evaluation, roadmap planning or exchange of information and experiences. Furthermore, MDM solutions of four software providers are examined with regard to their capability to meet the functions specified in the Functional Reference Architecture.

    The validation of models is a crucial step in distributed heterogeneous systems. In this paper, an incremental validation method is proposed in the scope of a Model Driven Engineering MDE approach, which is used to develop a master data management MDM field represented by XML Schema models. The MDE approach presented in this paper is based on the definition of an abstraction layer using UML class diagrams. The validation method aims to minimise the model errors and to optimisethe process of model checking. Therefore, the notion of validation contexts is introduced allowing the verification of data model views. Description logics specify constraints that the models have to check. An experimentation of the approach is presented through an application developed in ArgoUML IDE.

    Actuellement, la majorité des Systèmes d'Information est caractérisée par une hétérogénéité en terme de données et de solutions de paramétrage. Cette diversité se situe dans les systèmes de stockage (bases de données, fichiers, annuaires...), les formats de données (tables, fichiers propriétaires, documents XML...) et les solutions proposées pour gérer les différents types de données. Cette hétérogénéité à la fois dans les données et dans les solutions existantes sur le marché a pour conséquence de rendre lourde, complexe et coûteuse la mise en œuvre et l'exploitation de ces données par les applications de l'entreprise. Utiliser un ensemble d'applications différentes afin de pouvoir gérer cette diversité dans les types de données entraîne inévitablement une redondance tant au niveau des données que des outils. Afin de résoudre ces problèmes, Orchestra Networks a développé une solution appelée EBX.Platform, basée sur une architecture XML, permettant d'avoir une solution de master data management dans un Système d'Information. L'unification des données de références, au sein d'EBX.Platform, passe par la définition d'un modèle conceptuel de données, basée sur la technologie XML Schema, et la définition d'un référentiel interne. Nous proposons donc de vérifier et de consolider le modèle conceptuel d'EBX.Platform et d'apporter des solutions aux problèmes rencontrés.

    As part of the Enterprise project, Ciba started a master data management (MDM) initiative with the vision to consolidate master data across the company, to have strict master data governance rules and responsibilities in place, to formalize master data maintenance processes and validations in order to ensure master data quality, and to document key objects in a central database repository.Six key principles set the top framework for master data and strengthen the data quality awareness among master data stakeholders and users. The new MDM organization consists of three closely interlinked parts: a business data ownership model, a stewardship organization, and a maintenance organization. Local and global workflows have been implemented to support master maintenance processes.

    Abstract:

    Abstract master data management (MDM) is a data management practice, which attempts to increase data quality and data use across business processes throughout the organization. This paper observes how data ownership, responsibilities, and roles change during MDM development. The metaphor of imbrication was used as a theoretical lens to identify the factors that influenced the change, and to analyze the change as a result of the intertwined social and material factors. We derive ethnographical data from two MDM projects in a municipality over a time period of 32 months, and describe how data ownership and data governance roles and responsibilities were perceived, and how they evolved during the development. As a result, MDM data ownership is emphasized, and has distinct features in relation to roles and responsibilities. Ownership had on impact on how the development proceeded, and how the roles and responsibilities evolved.
