Towards a software quality certification of Master Data-based applications

Due to the very nature of Master Data-based applications, it is possible to use Data with the highest possible level of quality. MDM can help ensure that some common concerns, like duplicates or inconsistencies, are prevented by sharing a ‘single version of the truth’ throughout the organisation, and, in some cases, allowing collaborative updates to the Master Data Repository. Therefore, assuring the reliability of Master Data-based applications, would improve the organisation efficiency. This type of application should implement a set of functional requirements covering the basic operation of MDM principles. We propose a solution based on the evaluation and certification of ‘functional suitability’ of MDM applications. As part of our proposal, we inferred a set of functional requirements from parts 100 to 140 of ISO 8000. This set will be used as a reference in the required matching to compute values for each one of the metrics, properties, subcharacteristics and ultimately, functional suitability following a bottom-up procedure. Finally, the paper also describes the application of the evaluation procedure of an existing Master Data-based application.

The ability to consolidate application functionality (e.g., new customer creation) using a services layer that supplements multiple application approaches will provide additional value across the existing and future applications. This chapter covers the functional application services layer. There is a symbiotic relationship between MDM and a services-oriented architecture (SOA): a services-oriented approach to business solution development relies on the existence of a Master Data Repository, and the success of an MDM program depends on the ability to deploy and use Master object access and manipulation services. Employing a services-based approach serves multiple purposes within the MDM program. As the program is launched and developed, the use of multiple service layers simplifies both the implementation of the capabilities supporting the Data object life cycle and the transition from the diffused distributed application architecture into the consolidated Master application infrastructure. The flexibility provided by an SOA triggers the fundamental organizational changes necessary to use the shared information asset in its most effective manner. By driving application development from the perspective of the business instead of as a sequence of procedural operations, the organization can exploit the Master Data object set in relation to all business operations and the ways that those objects drive business performance.

This chapter discusses the process of identifying and finding the Data sets that are candidates as sources for Master Data and how to qualify them in terms of usability. This chapter considers the challenge of Master Data discovery, which depends on the effective collection of metaData from the many application Data sets that are subject to inclusion in the Master Data Repository. This depends on a process for analyzing enterprise metaData—assessing the similarity of syntax, structure, and semantics as a prelude to identifying enterprise sources of Master Data. Because the objective in identifying and consolidating Master Data representations requires empirical analysis and similarity assessment as part of the resolution process, it is reasonable to expect that tools will help in the process. The same kinds of tools and techniques that will subsequently be used to facilitate Data integration can also be employed to isolate and catalog organizational Master Data.

Military health system costs, utilization, and physician prescribing associated with prostate cancer, FY2007-FY2014.

This study examines the change in health care costs and utilization associated for prostate cancer patients within the MHS from FY07-FY14. Additionally, we assess the impact of physician prescribing patterns on health care costs. Methods: Primary ICD-9 codes for claims paid by TRICARE in fiscal years 2007 – 2014 were obtained from the Military Health System’s Master Data Repository. MHS beneficiaries, ages 18 – 64 and residing within the United States, were included only if they had accessed the healthcare system within the FY. Prostate cancer was identified using the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Clinical Classification Software. Trend analyses were used to examine the overall cost of prostate cancer care and utilization, including variation in costs by ambulatory or inpatient care.
