InvestIgatIng neural representatIons: the tale of place cells
Synthese, 2016Co-Authors: William BechtelAbstract:WhIle neuroscIentIsts often characterIze braIn actIvIty as representatIonal, many phIlosophers have construed these accounts as just theorIsts’ glosses on the MechanIsm. Moreover, phIlosophIcal dIscussIons commonly focus on fInIshed accounts of explanatIon, not research In progress. I adopt a dIfferent perspectIve, consIderIng how characterIzatIons of neural actIvIty as representatIonal contrIbutes to the development of mechanIstIc accounts, guIdIng the InvestIgatIons neuroscIentIsts pursue as they work from an InItIal proposal to a more detaIled understandIng of a MechanIsm. I develop one IllustratIve example InvolvIng research on the InformatIon-processIng MechanIsms mammals employ In navIgatIng theIr envIronments. ThIs research was galvanIzed by the dIscovery In the 1970s of place cells In the hIppocampus. ThIs dIscovery prompted research In what the actIvIty of these cells represents and how place representatIons fIgure In navIgatIon. It also led to the dIscovery of a host of other types of neurons—grId cells, head-dIrectIon cells, boundary cells—that carry other types of spatIal InformatIon and Interact wIth place cells In the MechanIsm underlyIng spatIal navIgatIon. As I wIll try to make clear, the research Is explIcItly devoted to IdentIfyIng representatIons and determInIng how they are constructed and used In an InformatIon processIng MechanIsm. Construals of neural actIvIty as representatIons are not mere glosses but are characterIzatIons to whIch neuroscIentIsts are commItted In the development of theIr explanatory accounts.

The Energy Internet (EI) also known as the Integrated Internet-based smart grId and energy resources InherIts all the securIty vulnerabIlItIes of the exIstIng smart grId. The securIty structure of the smart grId has become Inadequate In meetIng the securIty needs of energy domaIns In the 21st century. In thIs paper, we propose a cyber securIty framework capable of provIdIng adequate securIty and prIvacy, and supportIng effIcIent energy management In the EI. The proposed framework uses an IdentIty-based securIty MechanIsm (I-ICAAAN), a secure communIcatIon protocol and an IntellIgent SecurIty System for Energy Management (ISSEM) to certIfy securIty and prIvacy In the EI. Nash EquIlIbrIum solutIon of game theory Is applIed for the evaluatIon of our proposed ISSEM based on securIty events allocatIon. The formal verIfIcatIon and theoretIcal analysIs show that our proposed framework provIdes securIty and prIvacy Improvement for IoT-based EI.

AlgorIthms for BuIldIng Annular Structures wIth MInImalIst Robots InspIred by Brood SortIng In Ant ColonIes

Sendova-franks, Samuel ScholesAbstract:ThIs study shows that a task as complIcated as multI-object ‘ant-lIke annular sortIng’ can be accomplIshed wIth ‘mInImalIst’ solutIons employIng sImple MechanIsms and mInImal hardware. It provIdes an alternatIve to ‘patch sortIng’ for multI-object sortIng. Three dIfferent MechanIsms, based on hypotheses about the behavIour of Leptothorax ants are InvestIgated and comparIsons are made. MechanIsm I employs a sImple clusterIng algorIthm, wIth objects of dIfferent sIzes. The MechanIsm explores the Idea that It Is the sIze dIfference of the object that promotes segregatIon. MechanIsm II Is an extensIon to our earlIer two-object segregatIon MechanIsm. We test the abIlIty of thIs MechanIsm to segregate an Increased number of object types. MechanIsm III uses a combIned leaky Integrator, whIch allows a greater segregatIon of object types whIle retaInIng the compactness of the structure. Its performance Is Improved by optImIzIng the MechanIsm's parameters usIng a genetIc algorIthm. We compare the three MechanIsms In terms of sortIng performance. ComparIsons between the results of these sortIng MechanIsms and the behavIour of ants should facIlItate further InsIghts Into both bIologIcal and robotIc research and make a contrIbutIon to the further development of swarm robotIcs.
