    Pastures with diverse botanical composition may enhance animal-derived product quality. A recent study demonstrated high vitamin concentrations and yields in some forb species. The objectives of the present study were to investigate interrelations between herbage yields, vitamin concentrations, protein and fiber contents and analyze the effect of harvest date. We hypothesized that interrelations would be similar across investigated forage species. Four nonleguminous forbs: salad burnet (Sanguisorba minor), caraway (Carum carvi), chicory (Cichorium intybus), and ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata), three legumes: yellow sweet clover (Melilotus officinalis), lucerne (Medicago sativa), and birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus) and a perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne)–white clover (Trifolium repens) mixture were sown in a field trial with two replicated and randomized blocks.     Fresh forages are an important natural source of vitamins and fatty acids in ruminant diets, and their concentrations in forage species are important for the quality of animal-derived foods such as dairy and meat products. The aims of this study were to obtain novel information on vitamins and fatty acids (FA) in a variety of forage legumes and non-legume forb species compared to a grass–clover mixture and to explore implications for animal-derived products.     Abstract:

    Abstract White sweetclover is invading the Alaska glacial river floodplains and roadsides adjacent to natural areas, and control methods are needed. Chlorsulfuron, 2,4-DB, clopyralid, triclopyr, and 2,4-D controlled white sweetclover seedlings below recommended rates in the greenhouse. Biomass of established plants in the field was reduced by chlorsulfuron at recommended (17.6 g ai/ha), 1/2, and 1/4 rates and was reduced by triclopyr and 2,4-D at recommended rates (1,260 and 1,600 g ai/ha). Herbicides were more effective at reducing white sweetclover viable seed production in 2007 than in 2006. Only chlorsulfuron at 17.6 g ai/ha (recommended rate) eliminated seed production in both years. Flaming killed first-year plants, but some second-year plants resprouted and produced viable seed. Cutting at the 2.5 or 10 cm height did not control first-year plants because of regrowth, and second-year plant density and seed production was reduced by cutting at 2.5 cm but not by cutting at 10 cm.     Abstract:

    We describe specific primers that amplify nine microsatellite DNA loci from Melilotus alba and Melilotus officinalis , both invasive plant species (Fabaceae) throughout North America. Allelic diversity was slightly lower for M. alba than for M. officinalis , as was expected heterozygosity. For both species, heterozygote deficit was observed at several loci. Genotypic diversity was very high for both species; the 29 plant samples of each species all had different multilocus genotypes. These markers will be used to determine the origins of the sweetclover invasion in Alaska and to compare patterns of diversity between subarctic and lower latitude populations.

    Abstract:

    Aim Invasion of nitrogen-fixing non-native plant species may alter soil resources and impact native plant communities. Altered soils may be the driving mechanism that provides a suitable environment to facilitate future invasions and decrease native biodiversity. We hypothesized that Melilotus invasion would increase nitrogen availability and produce soil microclimate and biochemical changes, which could in turn alter plant species composition in a montane grassland community. Location Our research addressed the effects of white and yellow sweet clover (Melilotus officinalis and M. alba) invasion on soil characteristics and nitrogen processes in the montane grasslands in Rocky Mountain National Park. Methods We sampled soil in replicate sites of Melilotus-invaded and control (non-invaded) patches within disturbed areas in montane grassland habitats. Soil composites were analysed for available nitrogen, net nitrogen mineralization, moisture, carbon/nitrogen (C : N ratio), texture, organic matter and pH. Data were recorded at three sample dates during the growing seasons of 1998 and 1999. Results Contrary to our expectations, we observed lower nitrogen availability and mineralization in invaded patches, and differences in soil moisture content and soil C : N.     Abstract Exotic (nonnative) invasion, often fostered by anthropogenic disturbances, can be detrimental to the biodiversity of indigenous plant communities. We examined the impact of two exotic species, Melilotus officinalis and M. alba (yellow and white sweet clover) in the montane grassland community in Rocky Mountain National Park to determine (1) whether native and exotic plant diversity differs between patches within grasslands that are invaded by Melilotus species and patches that are not invaded (control patches) and (2) whether the presence of Melilotus species are associated with specific exotic species. Variables that were recorded included species richness, species composition, and percent cover in invaded and control patches at multiple spatial scales. The results showed that more exotic, annual/biennial, and forb species occurred within patches invaded by Melilotus species, while more native, perennial, and grass species occurred in nearby control patches.     Abstract:

    Exotic invasion is a key threat to native biological diversity, second only to habitat degradation. Melilotus officinalis is an exotic species that thrives in areas of anthropogenic disturbances and low nutrient availability. Typically, natural disturbance facilitates native species establishment and maintains species diversity; however, anthropogenic disturbance facilitates exotic species establishment. M. officinalis functions as a competitor in the montane communities because of its symbiosis with Rhizobium bacteria, a symbiosis that allows the plant to acquire nitrogen. Although the ability to fix nitrogen permits M. officinalis to grow in nitrogen depleted soils, the soil must have a microclimate that is favorable to symbiosis and nodulation. We analyzed abiotic soil characteristics in Rocky Mountain National Park to determine if nodulation was related to soil texture, as well as in the mid-range level of soil and temperatures. We found that nodules on plant specimens showed a positive correlation with soil moisture and temperature, and occurred in a specific range of moderate moisture and temperature. Soil texture was not correlated to nodule formation.

    Se realizó el análisis del contenido de fósforo (P), calcio (Ca), magnesio (Mg), hierro (Fe), cobre (Cu), zinc (Zn) y cenizas totales (Cen) e insolubles (Insol), en especies forrajeras que crecen naturalmente en el sistema silvopastoril del Bajo Delta del Río Paraná,  luego de la plantación forestal. Se cosecharon 10 plantas de cada una de las siguientesespecies: Glyceria multiflora (Cebadilla de agua), Deyeuxia viridiflavescens (Pasto plateado), Melilotus officinalis (Trébol de olor amarillo), Phalaris angusta (Alpistillo), Lolium multiflorum (Ray gras), Lathyrus pubescens (Arvejilla), Vicia gramínea (Vicia) y Leersia hexandra (Arrocillo). Se secaron y calcinaron, resuspendiendo las cenizas en ácido. Las determinaciones de minerales se realizaron por espectrofotometría de absorción atómica (EAA) y colorimetría. Las concentraciones determinadas fueron inferiores a las informadas para forrajeras de clima templado y, en algunos casos, a los requerimientos establecidos para ganado bovino
