the Menace Reflex
Practical Neurology, 2015Co-Authors: Wouter J C Van Ballegoij, Peter J Koehler, Bastiaan C Ter MeulenAbstract:The Menace Reflex (blink Reflex to visual threat) tests visual processing at the bedside in patients who cannot participate in normal visual field testing. We reviewed a collection of recently discovered historical movies showing the experiments of the Dutch physiologist Gysbertus Rademaker (1887–1957), exploring the anatomy of this Reflex by making cerebral lesions in dogs. The experiments show not only that the Menace Reflex is cortically mediated, but also that lesions outside the visual cortex can abolish the Reflex. Therefore, although often erroneously used in this way, an absent Menace does not always indicate a visual field deficit.

Disappearance of Seizures after Surgical Removal of Intracranial Meningioma in a Cat.
Japanese Journal of Veterinary Anesthesia & Surgery, 2020Co-Authors: Yasushi Hara, Daisuke Hasegawa, Michio Fujita, Hiromitsu Orima, Shinichiro Nakamura, Kimimasa Takahashi, Masahiko Noya, Masahiro TagawaAbstract:A 12-year-old castrated male Japanese domestic cat was presented for evaluation of frequent seizures accompanied by tonic convulsion. MRI examination revealed a space-occupying lesion with a clear boundary in the area from the temporal to occipital region of the left cerebral hemisphere. The intracranial mass was surgically removed, and was histologically diagnosed as meningioma. Although neurological abnormalities such as lowered consciousness level, circling, and visual disturbance with loss of pupillary light Reflex and Menace Reflex were temporally observed after surgery, the cat was improved with time by intensive postoperative care. Seizure disappeared after surgical removal of the intracranial menigioma in this case.

Surgical Removal of Eye Worm in a Horse
2020Co-Authors: B. Bharti, Anand PatidarAbstract:A horse was presented with history of varying degree of corneal opacity, epiphora, blepharospasm and ocular discomfort. Ocular examination of affected right eye revealed presence of eye worm moving in anterior chamber. Menace Reflex for vision were positive. Eye worm was surgically removed under sedation with a small stab incision given 4o clock position at limbus. The worm was expelled out along with a flow of aqueous humour. After removal of eye worm, post-operatively topical application of Gentamicin and Diclofenac eye drop was administered. Complete recovery and clearance of the corneal opacity took three weeks.
