    Abstract:

    Professor Pan Shu thought that the system of western psychology has the problem of an unbalanced treatment of the researches on cognition and intention. Pan's theory of the dichotomy of Mental Process into cognition and intention presupposes a balance between cognitive and intentional research in a scientific system of psychology. In addition, the psychological difference between human beings and animals is decided by the genetic difference, but the psychological difference between human beings is largely caused by cultural differences and the ways they relate themselves to objects. Western psychology gives priority to the relationship between man and his object, thus establishing a system of Mental Process characterized by the research on cognition; on the contrary, Chinese culture emphasizes the interpersonal relationship, hence the idea of Mental Process characterized by the investigation into intention. Therefore, a scientific system of psychology featuring a balance between cognition and intention should be based on the theoretic achievements of western psychology characterized by cognitive researches, but it also has to emphasize and reinforce the researches of Chinese traditional psychological thoughts with their focuses on the Process of intention.

    The difficulty in interpreting other people’s Mental states found in children with autism and in people affected by schizophrenia may be explained in terms of a unique Mental Process called Theory of Mind . The paper discusses the main operational issues of such a peculiar aspect of social cognition, the Theory of Mind, and its implication in schizophrenia, including a review of its related neural structures. Theory of Mind abilities may be a relevant aspect of social interaction involving people affected by schizophrenia, and they need to be further investigated in clinical research.

    Abstract:

    Abstract Using APOS theory as the framework along with a case study from a perspective within the methodological design of APOS theory, this study presents a cognitive model of the Principle of Mathematical Induction ( PMI ) in higher education. Based on evidence from university classrooms and the result of an initial measurement, the genetic decomposition designed by Dubinsky and Lewin for this concept was reformulated, introducing and defining the basis step in the PMI as a Mental Process. Using this reformulated genetic decomposition, the productions of four university students are analysed in order to support or refute the constructions it proposes. The results show that the reformulated genetic decomposition is viable and that the inclusion of the basis step as a Mental Process was seen in the cognitive model of the PMI shown by the students. The instruments used provide activities for a teaching sequence for the PMI at university level.

    Abstract Model selection should be based not solely on goodness-of-fit, but must also consider model complexity. While the goal of mathematical modeling in cognitive psychology is to select one model from a set of competing models that best captures the underlying Mental Process, choosing the model that best fits a particular set of data will not achieve this goal. This is because a highly complex model can provide a good fit without necessarily bearing any interpretable relationship with the underlying Process. It is shown that model selection based solely on the fit to observed data will result in the choice of an unnecessarily complex model that overfits the data, and thus generalizes poorly. The effect of over-fitting must be properly offset by model selection methods. An application example of selection methods using artificial data is also presented.
