  • Gonadal maturity scale of South Pacific hake Merluccius gayi peruanus (Ginsburg, 1954)
    Callao, 2015
Co-Authors: Perea De La Matta, Angel, Sánchez Espinoza Javier, Buitrón Díaz Betsy
    Abstract:

A new maturity scale is determined macroscopic and microscopically for Peruvian hake Merluccius gayi peruanus. Gonads of females and males were analyzed after being collected on Demersal Trawl Surveys from autumn 2002 to summer 2004. Based on inherent features of each gonadal maturity stage, the microscopic characteristics were analyzed and the most conspicuous visual features were determined in each maturity stage, establishing six maturity stages for both females and males: 0 (virgin), I (resting), II (maturing), III (mature), IV (spawning/expulsion), V (recovery/post expulsion).Boletín IMARPE vol. 30 N°s 1-2, 2015: p. 20-28Instituto del Mar del Per

  • Experimental study of ghost fishing by gillnets in Laguna Verde Valparaíso, Chile
Latin American Journal of Aquatic Research, 2014
    Co-Authors: Dante Queirolo, Erick Gaete
    Abstract:

In 2010, two experiments were carried out in order to study ghost fishing generated by lost or abandoned gillnets. The first experiment was aimed to identify and quantify the number of captured specimens in intentionally abandoned gillnet between 45 and 86 m depth, which were periodically checked up to 156 days after being abandoned. In this experiment, 912 specimens of 12 taxa were caught, mostly invertebrates such as Cancer porteri (81.6%) and Platymera gaudichaudii (9%). After the abandonment, the fish caught were only registered until day 63, while benthic species were captured during all the experiment. The second experiment consisted of checking and registering periodically the loss of height of an abandoned gillnet at 34 m depth in order to determine the reduction of the fishing capacity of the net. After 19 days of abandonment, the functional area of the net was reduced to 40% of the original area, reaching nearly zero after 155 days of abandonment. In order to estimate the potential effect of lost or abandoned gillnets in Chilean hake fisheries (Merluccius gayi gayi), an additional information-collecting process must be carried out, mainly in terms of frequency of gillnets losses.

  • composicion de especies en la pesqueria artesanal de enmalle de merluza comun Merluccius gayi gayi en chile central species composition in the artisanal gillnet fishery of chilean hake Merluccius gayi gayi in central chile
    2014
Co-Authors: Dante Queirolo, Erick Gaete, Ivonne Montenegro, Mauricio Ahumada, Jose Merino, Roberto Escobar
    Abstract:

The species composition in commercial fisheries is important information to establish management measures that contributed to reduce the impact and ensure the sustainability of the activity. A study was conducted to identify and quantify the species caught in the artisanal gillnet fishery of Chilean hake (Merluccius gayi gayi) between January and September of 2010. The capture was registered in 98 fishing sets performed by 45 fishing vessels of 14 artisanal ports distributed between the Valparaiso and Biobio regions. The target specie was the most important species caught in all regions. The presence of 24 taxa as by-catch was registered nevertheless only 4 species had a relative frequency of occurrence higher than 50% of sets performed in some of the regions. These species were lemon crab (Cancer porteri), armed box crab (Platymera gaudichaudii), red squat lobster (Pleuroncodes monodon) and big eye flounder (Hippoglossina macrops), which accounted the highest proportion (>70%) of total by-catch in number. Through classification and ordination methods based on species composition, 4 groups related to geographical regions and bathymetrical range were determined, while the mesh sizes used in the gillnets would have a minor influence on the explanation of the identified groups.

  • gillnet selectivity for chilean hake Merluccius gayi gayi guichenot 1848 in the bay of valparaiso
    Journal of Applied Ichthyology, 2013
Co-Authors: Dante Queirolo, Erick Gaete, Mauricio Ahumada
    Abstract:

Summary To determine the selectivity of gillnets in the Chilean artisanal fishery for the Chilean hake Merluccius gayi gayi, an experimental net was used with three mesh sizes (5.2, 6.8 and 7.6 cm). A total of 2279 specimens of Chilean hake were caught (24–56 cm total length, TL), mainly via gilling and snagging. The catch proportion below the size of sexual maturity SSM50% (37 cm TL) for each mesh size tested was estimated. Models were fitted separately according to the sex to compensate for differences in size compositions, with the males fitted to a binormal model and females fitted to the normal location model. Analysing both sexes combined, the model with the lowest deviance was lognormal, with estimated modal lengths of 30.9, 40.2 and 43.9 cm TL for meshes of 5.2, 6.8 and 7.6 cm, respectively. The estimated selectivity factor (SF) indicates that the modal size matches the SSM50% with a mesh size of 6.2 cm, while the length of retention of 50% (l50) coincides with the SSM50% with a mesh size of 7.6 cm.

  • the effects of subsampling and between haul variation on the size selectivity estimation of chilean hake Merluccius gayi gayi
Latin American Journal of Aquatic Research, 2012
Co-Authors: Dante Queirolo, M. C. Soriguer, Mauricio Ahumada, Carlos Hurtado, Karim Erzini
    Abstract:

Using the data collected in a size selectivity experiment on Chilean hake (Merluccius gayi gayi) carried out in 2000, the selectivity parameters for four codend mesh sizes (100, 110, 130, and 140 mm of mesh size opening) were estimated and modelled by the SELECT model. These analyses included considerations of the sampling proportions of the catch in the codend and cover. Furthermore, the analyses took into account between-haul variation. The l50 values were 30.8, 29.9, 30.0, and 41.2 cm of total length, respectively, values lower than the estimates obtained from previous studies. The contribution of explanatory variables to the selectivity model was also tested in order to determine the role of mesh size, catch size (in number), and towing speed. Increases in catch size and in towing speed were accompanied by decreases in the l50 estimates. These results demonstrate how incorporation of subsampling effect and explanatory variables to model between-haul variation can improve selectivity estimates and management of a valuable resource.

    Abstract:

The behaviour of fish by-catch was recorded and characterized by in situ observations in the mouth of a crustacean trawl using an underwater camera system with artificial light, at depths between 106 and 461 m, along the central coast of Chile. The groups or species studied were rattails (family Macrouridae), Chilean hake Merluccius gayi gayi, sharks (orders Carcharhiniformes and Squaliformes), skates (family Rajidae), flatfishes (genus Hippoglossina) and small benthopelagic and demersal fishes (orders Osmeriformes, Stomiiformes, Gadiformes, Ophidiiformes and Perciformes). The fish behaviour was categorized in terms of (1) position in the water column, (2) initial orientation with respect to the trawl, (3) locomotion and (4) swimming speed with respect to the trawl. Rattails, sharks, skates and flatfishes were passive in response to the trawl and showed similar behavioural patterns, with most fishes observed sitting or touching the bottom with no swimming or other activity. Merluccius gayi gayi was the most active species, displaying a wide combination of behavioural responses when the trawl approached. This species showed several behavioural patterns, mainly characterized by swimming forward at variable speed. A fraction of small bentho-pelagic and demersal fishes also showed an active behaviour but always at lower speed than the trawl. The species-specific differences in behaviour in the mouth of the trawl suggest that improvements at the level of the footrope can be made to reduce by-catch, especially of passive species.
