A mermithid nematode, Cretacimermis aphidophilus sp. n. (Nematoda: Mermithidae), parasitising an aphid (Hemiptera: Burmitaphididae) in Myanmar amber: a 100 million year association
Nematology, 2017Co-Authors: George PoinarAbstract:A new species of fossil mermithid, Cretacimermis aphidophilus sp. n. (Nematoda: Mermithidae), is described from the primitive extinct aphid, Caulinus burmitis (Hemiptera: Burmitaphididae), in mid-Cretaceous Myanmar amber. Aphid parasitism by mermithid nematodes is rare today with only two known cases involving root-feeding aphids. Based on the habits of the parasitised extant aphid hosts, it is likely that the fossil aphid was also a root parasite and encountered the infective stage mermithid in the soil. Such fossils provide rare glimpses of nematode-host associations from the distant past and provide minimum dates for the appearance of specific mermithid clades.

The new species is characterized by 6 cephalic papillae and 4 additional disk papillae located on the head between the cephalic papillae and stoma. Additional diagnostic characters are: mouth opening terminal, absence of X-fibers in the cuticle of both postparasitic juveniles and adults, paired, curved, medium-sized spicules, a straight barrow-shaped vagina and large eggs. Two infectious agents were present in some specimens. This is the first description of an adult nematode from a mayfly. optera

Parasitic ant nematodes include members of the families Mermithidae, Tetradonematidae, Allantonematidae, Seuratidae, Physalopteridae, Steinernematidae, and Heterorhabditidae. Those nematodes that are phoretically associated with ants, internally or externally, are represented by the Rhabditidae, Diplogastridae, and Panagrolaimidae. Fossils of mermithids, tetradonematids, allantonematids, and diplogastrids associated with ants show the evolutionary history of these relationships, some of which date back to the Eocene (40 mya).

New fossil nematodes in Dominican and Baltic amber
Nematology, 2012Co-Authors: George PoinarAbstract:Four new species of fossil mermithids (Nematoda: Mermithidae) are described from amber: Heydenius arachnius n. sp. from a spider (Arachnida: Araneae) in Dominican amber, H. phasmatophilus n. sp., from a walking stick (Phasmatodea: Phasmatidae) in Baltic amber, H. podenasae n. sp. from a moth (Lepidoptera) in Baltic amber and H. trichorosus n. sp. from a caddis fly (Trichoptera: Leptoceridae) in Baltic amber. With previous descriptions of fossil mermithids from Diptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Hemiptera, there are now representatives of seven insect orders as hosts of fossil mermithids. With these additional four fossils, the total number of described nematode fossils is now 95, with 70 occurring in amber.

Biodiversidad de Mermítidos (Nematoda, Mermithidae) parasitoides de larvas de dípteros acuáticos (Simuliidae, Culicidae y Chironomidae) en Argentina

Se proporciona una lista de nemátodos pertenecientes a la familia Mermithidae parasitoides de varias especies de simúlidos y quironómidos (Diptera: Simuliidae, Chironomidae) en arroyos de aguas claras, oxigenadas y de mucha corriente. Se identificaron en las larvas de jejenes 21 especies de mermítidos correspondientes a ocho géneros, de los cuales 1 (Ditremamermis Camino y Poinar, 1988) es propio de Argentina. La región neotropical constituye un área con alta diversidad de especies de nemátodos mermítidos de simúlidos, muchas de las cuales podrían ser consideradas agentes biorreguladores de esta plaga de interés sanitario. Los mermítidos se presentan en los quironómidos con tres especies y en los mosquitos con la especie Strelkovimermis spiculatus y una especie no identificada del género Hydromermis Corti, 1902.The present study is based on specific diversity of mermitids parasitoids of aquatic insects of blackfly, midges and mosquitoes larvae, and their prevalence in different regions of our country. It provides a list of Nematoda belonging to the family Mermithidae parasitoid of several species of blackflies and midges (Diptera, Simuliidae and Chironimidae) in streams of clear water. Aquatic insect larvae had mermitids nematodes; 21 species corresponding to 8 genera of which 1 (Ditremamermis Camino y Poinar, 1988) is typical of Argentina. This neotropical region is an area with high species diversity of mermitids nematodes of blackflies, many of which could be considered biocontrol agents for this kind of pest, with bio-medical interest. (Nematoda, Mermithidae), a parasite of larvae of Diloboderus abderus Sturm, 1826 (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae) is described and illustrated. This new species is characterized by amphids small, amphidial opening pocket-shaped, the anterior portion of the vagina muscularized and slightly protruding with a descending branch forming a loop before joining the uterus, and three rows of genital papillae: the ventrolateral divided in two rows with eight papillae in the outer row and with six papillae in the inner one; the ventral row with four pairs and one single preanal papillae, and with two pairs, a triplete, one pair, a single and one pair postanal papillae.Una nueva especie, Hexamermis paranaense sp. nov. (Nematoda, Mermithidae), parásito de larvas del gusano blanco, Diloboderus abderus Sturm, 1826 (Coleóptera, Scarabaeidae), se describe e ilustra. Primer registro de nematodos mermítidos parasitando chicharritas en Sudamérica

The host specimens were collected from weeds associated to citrus orchards located in Corrientes, Argentinean province, during a biodiversity study in 2015. As far as we know, this is the first South American example of leafhoppers parasitized by mermithids.Se encontraron nematodos de la familia Mermithidae parasitando ninfas y adultos de Hortensia similis (Auchenorryncha: Cicadellidae). Los especímenes hospedadores fueron recolectados en malezas asociadas a huertos de cítricos ubicados en la provincia de Corrientes, Argentina, durante un estudio de biodiversidad en 2015. Debido a la presencia del nematodo que se evidencia por sus estructuras tales como los homorocitos, esticocitos, cuerdas longitudinales y trofosoma, se observo una alteracion principalmente a nivel del epitelio intestinal, el cuerpo graso y la musculatura de la larva. Hexamermis paranaense new species (Nematoda, Mermithidae): a parasite of Diloboderus abderus (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae) in Argentina

(Nematoda, Mermithidae), a parasite of larvae of Diloboderus abderus Sturm, 1826 (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae) is described and illustrated. This new species is characterized by amphids small, amphidial opening pocket-shaped, the anterior portion of the vagina muscularized and slightly protruding with a descending branch forming a loop before joining the uterus, and three rows of genital papillae: the ventrolateral divided in two rows with eight papillae in the outer row and with six papillae in the inner one; the ventral row with four pairs and one single preanal papillae, and with two pairs, a triplete, one pair, a single and one pair postanal papillae.

A NEW SPECIES OF GASTROMERMIS (NEMATODA: Mermithidae) A PARASITE OF SIMULIUM PERTINAX (DIPTERA: SIMULIIDAE) IN ARGENTINA

(Nematoda: Mermithidae) was found parasitizing larvae of the blackfly Simulium pertinax (Diptera: Simuliidae) in Argentina. The species is characterized by the long, muscular, S-shaped and cylindrical vagina, simple spicule, three rows of genital papillae comprising 19 preanal papillae and 12 postanal papillae in the ventral row and 18 lateral papillae in each of the lateral rows.
