    Abstract:

    Tribe Merremieae, as currently circumscribed, comprise c. 120 species classified in seven genera, the largest of which (Merremia) is morphologically heterogeneous. Previous studies, with limited sampling, have suggested that neither Merremieae nor Merremia are monophyletic. In the present study, the monophyly of Merremia and its allied genera was re-assessed, sampling 57 species of Merremieae for the plastid matK, trnL–trnF and rps16 regions and the nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. All genera of Merremieae and all major morphotypes in Merremia were represented. Phylogenetic analyses resolve Merremieae in a clade with Ipomoeae, Convolvuleae and Daustinia montana. Merremia is confirmed as polyphyletic and a number of well-supported and morphologically distinct clades in Merremieae are recognized which accommodate most of the species in the tribe. These provide a framework for a generic revision of the assemblage. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015.

    Abstract:

    A taxonomic review of the Convolvulaceae in Timor is presented. A total of 61 taxa are listed, comprising 53 species from 15 genera. The most diverse genus by far is Ipomoea with 25 reported species, followed by Merremia with seven species. Of the seven species initially thought to be endemic, only six are endemic to the island. Two new records are presented (Cuscuta campestris and Merremia quinata) and a new species, Argyreia paivae, is described and illustrated. Keys to genera and species are included, as well as distribution maps. The conservation of East-Timorese Convolvulaceae is analysed and it is shown that they are inadequately represented in the established natural reserves’ network.

    Abstract:

    One important complication in the diabetic patient is diabetic ulcer. Diabetic ulcers in diabetes patient can increase the risk of amputation and expensive treatment costs, so the alternative treatmeant such as Merremia mammosa which has antiinflamatory and antidiabetic is needed. This study aimed to determine the comparison of the number of macrophage in the incisional wound in hyperglycemic male wistar rats between treatment with Merremia mammosa extract and NaCl. The in vivo test was done by creating wound incision on the mice backs and treated with gentamycin ointment 5% in a positive control group, NaCl in a negative control group and Merremia mammosa extract in a dose of 100m), 200 mg , 400 mg in treatment group. The result obtained by counting the number of macrophage in histopatholgy examination. The result showed the number of macrophage were 0,36 cells/field of view in a negative control group, 0,52 cells/field of view in a positive control group, 0,48 cells/field of view in all Merremia mammosa treatment groups. The data analysis showed no significant difference with p-value of 0,729. In conclusion, there was no significant difference between the used of Merremia mammosa extract and NaCl on full thickness incisional wounds of hyperglycemic male wistar rats.     Abstract:

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Studies were undertaken to determine the effects of in vivo germination of mechanically scarified with and without sandpaper, chemically scarified with H2SO4 for 40 min and without H2SO4 and in vitro germinated with sandpaper and with sandpaper and GA3 seeds of ipomoea and Merremia in the Lambayeque region and surrounding areas (Peru). MATERIALS AND METHODS Seeds of 16 species of ipomoea and 3 species of Merremia collected from Lambayeque (Peru) were germinated under in vivo and in vitro conditions and measured the angle of divergence of seedlings and the data were analysed by ANOVA. RESULTS in the in vivo germination process, mechanical and chemical scarification caused an increase in germination and in the in vitro germination process mechanical scarification with sandpaper and GA3 also caused an increase in germination. Seedling emergence was observed and recorded and found not to fit the classical models of hypogeal and epigeal emergence and in the seedling morphology the degree of apical cleft of paracotyledonary leaves and the angle of divergence between the two lobes of a paracotyledon were determined. The length of the apical cleft was highly correlated (r = 0.81) with the angle of divergence. CONCLUSION Convolvulaceae is the most advanced family that produces seeds with physical dormancy (water-impermeable seed coat).

El objetivo principal de este trabajo es identificar y comentar los registros anteriores y nuevos de los géneros Ipomoea y Merremia en el departamento de Lambayeque (Perú) y zonas circundantes. Se describen 18 especies de Ipomoea y 3 especies de Merremia: Ipomoea alba, I. asarifolia, I. hederifolia, I. indica, I. nil e I. wrightii. I. aristolochiifolia, I. batatas, I. cairica, I. carnea, I. incarnata, I. parasitica, I. piurensis, I. purpurea, I. tiliacea, Merremia aegyptia, M. quinquefolia y M. umbellata son nuevos registros para la flora de Lambayeque. Incluso Ipomoea amnicola, I. dumetorum e I. quamoclit se reportan como nuevos registros en el departamento adyacente de Cajamarca. Se presentan claves para identificar las especies y los grupos intergenéricos.     Merremia dissecta fue primeramente descubierta en el Caribe, luego en la Florida, México y más tarde fue introducida en el Viejo Mundo. Históricamente y aún actualmente se ha usado como condimento, medicina, y ornamentatión por varias culturas. A pesar de que en varias áreas se ha transformado en una mala hierba, se continua vendiendo como un ornamento aún en esas areas. En Argentina, as raices de M. dissecta var. edentata aún son usadas como alimento por unos cuantos grupos indígenas. La historia, los usos y la química de estas utilizaciónes son aquí discutidas. Merremia dissecta was first discovered in the Caribbean, then Florida, Mexico, and later in the Old World, where it had been introduced. Historically and currently, the species has been used as a condiment, medicine, and ornamental by an array of cultures. Although the plant has escaped in several areas to become a weed, it continues being sold as an ornament in even those regions. In Argentina, roots of M. dissecta var. edentata are still used as food by a few indigenous groups. History, uses, and chemistry are discussed regarding these utilizations.

  • Xixicamátic or wood rose (Merremia tuberosa, Convolvulaceae): Origins and Dispersal

    Abstract:

    The nativity of Merremia tuberosa is examined with historical, ecological, linguistic, cladistic, and biogeographic data. All data indicate that the species was originally from southern Mexico and nearby Central America. The closest relatives of M. tuberosa are M. austinii and M. discoidesperma. Merremia tuberosa was first recorded from Mexico as xixicamatic in the middle 1500s by Fr. Bernadino Sahaguin; no connection was made between that plant and the Convolvulaceae by subsequent authors. Plukenet later recorded M. tuberosa in Jamaica in 1691. By 1731 or earlier M. tuberosa was cultivated at the Chelsea Physic Garden, London, England. Soon afterward, wood rose had been spread around the world and grown for medicine. The roots contain resins that formerly were used across the tropics and in Europe as laxatives. Now plants are grown for their flowers and ornamental fruits that are used by florists.
