    Abstract:

    Background: Quality-controlled subject gateways are Internet services which apply a selected set of targeted measures to support systematic resource discovery. Considerable manual effort is used to operate a selection of resources which meet quality criteria and to display an extensive description and indexing of these resources with standards-based Metadata. Objective: Several Metadata Element sets are proposed to describe, index and qualify health resources to be included in a French quality-controlled health gateway called CISMeF. The main objectives were to enhance Internet health document retrieval and navigation, and to allow interoperability with other Internet services. Results: The Dublin Core Metadata Element set is used to describe and index all Internet health resources included in CISMeF. For teaching resources, some Elements from IEEE1484 Learning Object Metadata are also used. For evidenced-base medicine resources, specific Metadata are employed which assess the health content quality. The HIDDEL Metadata set is used to enhance transparency, trust and quality of health information on the Internet. Conclusion: Comprehensive Metadata Element sets can be extremely useful to describe, index and assess health resources on the Internet in a quality-controlled subject gateway. Machine-readable Metadata creates an Semantic Web which is more efficient for end-users as compared to the current Web.

    Abstract:

    Purpose – The paper seeks to analyze the health of the vocabulary ecosystem in terms of requirements, addressing its various stakeholders such as maintainers of linked open vocabularies, linked data providers who use those vocabularies in their data and memory institutions which, it is hoped, will eventually provide for the long-term preservation of vocabularies. Design/methodology/approach – This paper builds on requirements formulated more tersely in the DCMI generic namespace policy for RDF vocabularies. The examination of requirements for linked open vocabularies focuses primarily on property-and-class vocabularies in RDFS or OWL (sometimes called Metadata Element sets), with some consideration of SKOS concept schemes and Dublin Core application profiles.     Purpose – Library‐world “languages of description” are increasingly being expressed using the resource description framework (RDF) for compatibility with linked data approaches. This article aims to look at how issues around the Dublin Core, a small “Metadata Element set,” exemplify issues that must be resolved in order to ensure that library data meet traditional standards for quality and consistency while remaining broadly interoperable with other data sources in the linked data environment.Design/methodology/approach – The article focuses on how the Dublin Core – originally seen, in traditional terms, as a simple record format – came increasingly to be seen as an RDF vocabulary for use in Metadata based on a “statement” model, and how new approaches to Metadata evolved to bridge the gap between these models.Findings – The translation of library standards into RDF involves the separation of languages of description, per se, from the specific data formats into which they have for so long been embedded.     Abstract:

    This paper describes a multilingual Metadata schema registry which has been developed at the University of Library and Information Science in Tsukuba, Japan. The registry currently has reference translations of Dublin Core Metadata Element Set written in 22 languages, DC Qualifiers and the DCMI Type Vocabulary written in English and Japanese, along with descriptive Elements of the Nippon Cataloging Rules. The registry is realized using XML technologies; Metadata schemas are expressed in the RDF Schema language, the RDF description is handled by a Java servlet using XSLT stylesheet. This paper shows the functions and the architecture of the registry.

    Several learning object Metadata (LOM) Elements are of limited value, due to their semantic ambiguity. This study was carried out to operationalize the educational Metadata Element "difficulty" for multiple choice questions. For this purpose it considers both variables derived from the software used for composing and marking exams automatically, as well as didactic variables having an influence on the difficulty of multiple choice questions. The result is a classification scheme for multiple choice questions by difficulty. With the help of the findings an improvement can be achieved concerning the compilation of multiple choice exams and the quality standards set up can serve as guidelines for examiners when creating exams.
