    Metadata Records are a ubiquitous and foundational feature of contemporary information systems. However, while their simple surface structure may lead us to think that the semantics of a Metadata Record is unproblematic and easily discerned, our analysis of an example Record suggests otherwise. We show three possibilities for the logical form of the proposition expressed by a Metadata Record. All three are substantially different in the first order constructs utilized, and no two can be recognized as equivalent for the purposes of information organization. The semantics of the common Metadata Record is elusive. The main source of this problem appears to be the identifier attribute. Although identifier attributes have the syntactic appearance of any other attribute in the Metadata vocabulary, this uniformity conceals their potential for assuming a distinctive semantic role, and one which appears to cross the traditional object language / metalanguage boundary, suggesting that translation of colloquial Metadata Records into logic-based knowledge representations does not take place entirely at a first-order level.

    Abstract:

    Cultural heritage institutions, including galleries, libraries, museums, and archives are increasingly digitizing physical items and collecting born-digital items and making these resources available on the Web. Metadata plays a vital role in the discovery and management of these collections. Existing frameworks to identify and address deficiencies in Metadata rely heavily on count and data-value based metrics that are calculated over aggregations of descriptive Metadata. There has been little research into the use of traditional network analysis to investigate the connections between Metadata Records based on shared data values in Metadata fields such as subject or creator. This study introduces Metadata Record graphs as a mechanism to generate network-based statistics to support analysis of Metadata. These graphs are constructed with the Metadata Records as the nodes and shared Metadata field values as the edges in the network. By analyzing Metadata Record graphs with algorithms and tools common to the field of network analysis, Metadata managers can develop a new understanding of their Metadata that is often impossible to generate from count and data-value based statistics alone. This study tested application of Metadata Record graphs to analysis of Metadata collections of increasing size, complexity, and interconnectedness in a series of three related stages. The findings of this research indicate effectiveness of this new method, identify network algorithms that are useful for analyzing descriptive Metadata and suggest methods and practices for future implementations of this technique.

    Our study explores the possible uses and effectiveness of network analysis, including Metadata Record Graphs, for evaluating collections of Metadata Records at scale. We present the results of an experiment applying these methods to Records in the University of North Texas (UNT) Digital Library and two sub-collections of different compositions: the UNT Scholarly Works collection, which functions as an institutional repository, and a collection of architectural slide images. The data includes count- and value-based statistics with network metrics for every Dublin Core element in each set. The study finds that network analysis provides useful information that supplements other metrics, for example by identifying Records that are completely unconnected to other items through the subject, creator, or other field values. Additionally, network density may help managers identify collections or Records that could benefit from enhancement. We also discuss the constraints of these metrics and suggest possible future applications.

A number of frameworks and associated metrics support Metadata evaluation but this paper focuses on a less-studied aspect of accessibility by using traditional network analysis to understand the connections between Metadata Records created through shared data values, in elements such as subject or creator. The goal of the research reported in this paper is to investigate potential uses of network analysis and to determine which metrics hold the most promise in effective assessment of Metadata at the database or collection level. We introduce the Metadata Record Graph and analyze how it can be used to better understand various-sized collections of Metadata.

    Evolving user needs and relevance require continuous change and reform. A good digital collection has mechanisms to accommodate the differing uses being made of the digital library system. In a Metadata management context, change could mean to transform, substitute, or make the content of a Metadata Record different from what it is or from what it would be if left alone. In light of the evolving compliance requirements, this paper analyses the three most common types of change within Metadata Records as well as their subcategories and discusses the possible implications of such changes within and beyond the Metadata Records.

    Abstract:

    Metadata Records duplicate detection and management of federated digital library are one of key issues to ensure Metadata quality and improve federal retrieval services. Many duplicate Record detection methods exist for conventional federated digital library,but they are computationally intensive and low accuracy and so on. This paper proposes an efficient duplication approach for a relatively large federated digital library based on improved N-Gram method. Simulation experimental results show that the method improve the performance of duplicate detection effectively,accelerate the rate of duplicate detection.
