This is accomplished through a content analysis of American newspaper articles from 1993–2002. Three Metanarratives of Russian national identity were discovered and charted over time. They are: Russia as Western, Russia as Oriental and Russia as Geopolitical Space. By charting these Metanarratives over time, shifts in representation are connected to political events to illustrate the role of newspapers in mediating between political processes like NATO expansion and national identity.

These are teleological master ideas that seek to explain Russia's essence and place in the world as a function of its territorial size and location. All of them argue that a specific element gives Russia its uniqueness among nations: Russia's territory is larger than other countries in the world and forms a specific continent (Eurasianism); Russia is going higher in the universe (Cosmism); and Russia is going farther north (Arctism). The author proceeds to discuss each metanarrative in turn before outlining their similarities in the concluding section of the paper. Regulation is evil: An application of narrative policy analysis to regulatory debate in New Zealand
Policy Sciences, 2002Co-Authors: Todd Bridgman, David BarryAbstract:Using findings from research on the implementation of telephone number portability in New Zealand, we demonstrate how narrative analysis can account for how particular influence stories, or policy narratives, come to dominate the policy process. In this paper, we extend the concept of metanarrative, which to date has been interpreted as a story that policy makers use to recast policy problems. Policy Metanarratives are shown to have strong pre-figurative effects and to be more pervasive than previously recognised.

Instead of telling stories about animals, a metanarrative such as Bird Lovers, Backyard is a montage and reworking of a wide range of existing forms of narrative as well as a critical engagement with the works and authors that exemplify them.
